Thanks for coaching the 3.0 drill session today at the Picklr in McKinney, Tx. I realized that I need to work on my third shot drop, and your advice on having a loose grip and relaxed swing helped. Even though a lot of my drop end up popping up high, or hitting the net, I am going to keep practicing. Thanks, coach Kincheloe

Thanks for coming out to the session! I did notice that was helping you. I also really liked your serve, keep up with that!

I can see we need a "Locate a Drill Partner" app for those of us who are surrounded by people who just want to play fast killer games. 😕

So true. I can relate. I’m a newer player but played tennis for a long time. So I’m green but getting better at a decent rate. Im trying to meet new players, but currently I’m in the middle ground of where most players lie. I’m either way better than someone, or they’re way better than me. So that makes it hard. It’s a weird spot. I don’t have an official rating I’m probably sitting at like a 3.6-3.75. The players that are in my area, from what I’ve seen either 60+ and well below 3.5, or 20-50 and at like a 4.2 minimum. So finding that small minority of my skill is quite hard. I know DUPR shows ratings but that’s it. At some point I’ll be moving to a larger city or surrounding area once I’m done school for my job so the player base will probably go up naturally

Great tips. Nowadays with modern paddles, the top spins can give you amazing shots too.

I do what the teacher does here. I hit the ball and stay back, then my opponents drop the ball over the net for an easy score.

Ha. I do too, but I do it when I really play and he is doing it because he is demonstrating just the technique of a third shot drop.

Love it. Slow mo, Reasoning, demonstration, GRIP Change. Did you close your grip for the backhand flip at 14:35? I just started playing with changing grips yesterday. It seems the best players in my neighborhood change their grips during points a lot.

I play a lot of people who don’t hit like your demo partner. Everything coming at me is fast and low. Is the 3rd shot drop still an option?

The recommendation whereas one holds the paddle with a light grip while lagging the paddle combined with arm and shoulder pushing to create a ball flight with a lower trajectory is another interesting theory in this ever evolving sport. Query-can one create a lower trajectory by hitting the 3rd shot drop after it reaches it’s apex and would this method be a simpler, more repeatable motion?

I first used his teaching on the paddle top-pointing-swing-hard-without-paddle-turning for the serve. It works very well to create a flat trajectory which does not bounce very high landing near the baseline. This feels like lagging the paddle and does not require timing to close the paddle face on a hard serve.
Variations are same grip and paddle lag, but using a push-to-target motion instead of a hard swing. The paddle prep to the opponent looks the same but the power output is less which chages the speed of the ball to a half shot or 70% shot. If the opponent is caught at the baseline after a few hard hits, suddenly slowing the return of the ball like that can create a return error or a pop up.
