To the person who wondered about the number of instruments used in different sections of the orchestra, it's the composer who decides how many instruments he (in this case Stravinsky) scores the music for. At the beginning of an orchestral score the composer stipulates how many players are required in each section. In some cases there are musicians who play more than one instrument during a given piece. This happens quite frequently in the woodwind section but sometimes brass players also play different instruments. It all depends on what the composer requires.
Just heard it at Carnegie Hall 1910 version and my thoughts are still there. I admit, if one us not watching it with the ballet the 1919 version you played is better. Your conductor put so much emotion in it. Wonderful, thank you all👏💖
These are the parts of the ballet in which the music by itself works better. But the full version is quite impressive too, I actually miss the "Golden Apples Game" part and the "appearence of Prince Ivan", which has a beautiful French horn solo.

The quality of the performance is undeniable but sadly the video seems to have been ruined by a terrible sound technician who seems completely incapable of following the orchestras natural dynamics. The piano sections were deafening through my headphones and given no where to go for the fortissimo sections they just dropped all the power out of the mix and somehow they ended up quieter than the piano sections! Not to mention the twits screaming "bravo" as soon as the final chord is struck like they can't wait to get to the bar. A real shame because I love the orchestra, conductor and the interpretation.
It's Julien Hardy. He is indeed amazing - and so long as there are French bassoonists of that standard, the French bassoon is probably going to survive. It would be a great shame if it were to disappear.

And yes, Julien Hardy handles the challenging french system masterfully. The french bassoon overall is far more difficult to control than the german, but he makes it look easy.

I have always enjoyed the more notes in space than basic four/ five person band. Hearing so many different instruments is just Awesome. Seeing them play... Mesmerizing !!
It truly is beautiful :) But don't mix up Classical Music with Symphony Music. This piece is actually a contemporary piece because it was written in the contemporary era, and has a very different style to classical music. But symphony music in general is really amazing! Especially a masterpiece like this
It's as if this was a score to a movie. Highly cinematic. But the movie was in the composer's mind. His influence on modern film scores is unmistakable.

He seems to be inhabiting the music, looking out from it, knowing exactly what's coming, from whom, when, in complete control. Seeming able to keep different times at the same time. See his Mother Goose Suite!
I do not know who she is but the first oboe is very good. I counted ten basses. Does this orchestra always use ten basses or only for this piece? It gives a very nice deep sound, especially at the beginning. I think I heard a wrong entrance by a flutist at 3:43? Very nice performance. Enjoyed it. Bravo!!!
His expressions are Philosophical and intimate. But in perfect control of Balance of Technic and Emotions, which makes his music so much deeper and golden. I have the luck to work with him for 3 weeks. It's changed my life as a musician!
His conducting may be not expressive but it is soo clear and on point. I would love to play under someone who conducts like that. I played this piece before and if the conductor is not on point it can fall apart real quick.
I find this performance flat and boring. This from a conductor and orchestra that recorded a wonderful sensual performance of St Saens third symphony. The music for Firebird is one of the great works of the last two hundred years, but this performance doesn’t cut it for me. Perhaps Maestro Chung was not well.

Of the different versions on YT, this is my favorite. The pace is just right, particularly the 5th movement.

10 basses is extra. there are a couple of mistakes also in other parts. but i like this version. could be a little tighter. very very difficult music.

A fantastic performance sadly ruined for TH-cam by an obviously deaf sound engineer.

My error. The glorious performance of the Saint-Saens 3rd was with the orchestra of the opera Bastille.
I think the recording is so bad that destroys the performance. This music deserves the very best recording to be fully appreciated.
