I would go for the Alpina XD3 - all the performance I need for everyday driving (almost 400 HP), much better ride/comfort and better fuel economy.

BOOOM! The best review of this vehicle bar none! I decided and purchased the 2022 X3 M40i LCI over the full Comp version. The X3 M is fast, really fast. However; as you've stated "the overall experience is the same," especially once you've launched it a few times and have blast past every Dodge that wants to be left behind.
The party trick(s) of gesture control and no hands parking are just that, gimmicks and tech that will eventually go unused. That being said the X3M is a phenomenal performance machine yet the X3 M40i with the 48V Mild hybrid is on par in terms of overall design and daily driving experience. The difference in these two SAVs simply comes down to, one is for track performance and the other is for street performance. Thanks Omar another great video. You've earned my sub!

I have a 2022 X3 M40i and have really enjoyed it. It’s my first BMW and what a joy to drive. Handling is great and power output is plenty for my taste. Just a great vehicle! I considered the M, but to be honest, didn’t see the benefits (for me) of paying an additional $13k.

Coming from a 2021 X3 m40i, and test drove a x3m today. Seats are more comfortable in the m40i, seats in the M are designed to hold you in place and therefore pokes or pushes in on some of us big butt people. To me, if im not comfortable in the seat, the power is worthless and make no mistake the X3M has some really nice power. However, you can theoretically have the best of both worlds with upgrades to the m40i, I'd wager for $13000 you could meet or beat the performance of the M. For me, the X3 M40i is the best IMO.

I have an X3 M40i. It is awesome. Would I say no to more power? No. Do I NEED more power? Who doesn't? But... in a day-to-day setting, I'm pretty sure that I don't need sub-par fuel economy, a stiffer suspension and harder seats.

Great video! I own an X3 M40i LCI and considered an X3M comp... ultimately the extra $13K to me didn't seem worth it... plus the M40i has torque lower in the rev range that makes it a little better as a daily driver. Your final point on the M3 / M4 really hits the nail on the head though... these aren't replacements... these are still SUVs that you can have a ton of fun with not thoroughbred cars and if I am going all out I'd prefer the M3.

X3M is much better than the X3M40i. Test drove both and bought the X3MC. You can't scratch the performance itch from within the M-Lite. And if you aint got the itch, its all good, but if you do...

I have a 2020 M40i and was offered a pretty tempting deal for the X3M for not much more at the time I picked it up from the dealership. But I declined as I had heard the stories of unreasonable stiffness and since it was going to be my DD. I'm kind of kicking myself for it now since I've wanted an M-car since I was in high school and the E46 M3's were brand new, so I'm thinking of putting in an order for a X3M in a few months. Have you driven a pre-LCI X3M? I've heard the LCI isn't as stiff.
I haven't driven a X3M but I think the perception of stiffness is relative though and really depends on your vehicle history. I've had a 08' Cooper S, 17' Macan S, 19' 718 Cayman S, 20' M40i, 21' SQ5 and a 22' GLC43. I didn't feel that any of those were overly stiff. The suspension feel was as expected for all of those cars. So it's hard to tell if the stiffness on the X3M is as bad as people make it out to be.

Have you drifted in the X3M? Trackdays or autocross? Or just did you just drive it around for a few hours?
The handling in the X3M is SUBLIME and other owners have likened it to an M3. Obviously the weight is there but it is incredible what the M performance team have done with this X3.
I wouldn't call it an M3 replacement, but amongst the sport-crossover competition, this is the M3 among them.

  • @GoFast865
    @GoFast865 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Fair analysis and I understand where you’re coming from. However, when you think about all you’re getting for the extra $13K, it’s actually a great value imo. Modded S58’s will run circles around modded B58’s. The suspension, brakes, seats, other M goodies, etc make the X3M comp a special vehicle. If you want something quick that works well as a daily, go electric. Otherwise, I think it has to differentiate itself enough, which the X3MC does but the X3M40 does not.

I recently test drove the 2022 X3M Comp (used) and have to say it’s definitely quicker to get up to speed vs. my 2019 M40i. However, I couldn’t help but to notice there was still noticeable turbo lag that I wasn’t expecting from a twin turbo scroll configuration. In my opinion, BMW could tune this engine’s throttle response and reduce the turbo lag with some more engineering improvements. Regardless, my next SUV will probably be the new performance hybrid X3M coming out in 2025 👍🏻

$4500 for a metallic paint job!!!!!! It just blows my mind what these German manufacturers charge for extras. I've lived in Europe and I can tell you Europeans would never pay these prices that Americans pay. That is why the US is their biggest market. It gets to the point where they don't even try to hide their greed any more. It's shameless. A car that stickers for $70K can end up pushing close to $100K after extras. Ridiculous.

The m40i sounds better, gets better gas mileage, has one less turbo that can potentially fail, and still has enough pep to get the driver into all sorts of trouble. Unless you're aiming for 9 second 1/4 miles, the m40i has better value, but even the b58 can be upgraded to reach M levels of performance.

    • @pauldavies2992

Totally: MPG, drivability/low speed pulling around town, more forgiving suspension - M40i all the way (I have a 2018). X3M needs 3000rpm to get any life out if it and who wants to drive like a bell end around town listening to that all day, M40i drives like a limo but is totally transformed when you put the pedal to the metal - a real 'Q' car (I debadged mine).
There's a cool video of a drag race somewhere on TH-cam between x3m and m40i showing how poor the X3M is away from a stop. Imagine, you're in the X3M at the lights on the inside lane, but there's a parked car in your lane 30-50 ft ahead and then an M40i pulls alongside you. you'ld think the X3M would have the M40i for breakfast when lights turn green, but no it's the other way around, X3M turbo bogs down and is a full 2 car lengths behind before its turbo catches up and by then you're on top of that parked car with no where to go. On the open road both will land you in jail if you try to race each other and the M40i is still seriously quick. You can't even claim bragging rights as they have the same key to throw down on the bar and both are beaten by some of the Teslas out there so what is the point.

@@pauldavies2992 The difference is one is a true //M car and the other is not. I owned an ///M40i prior to our F97. Although the M40i was extremely fun, and Loud (louder on startup in some situations than the ///M), the drive is different. Spent 2 years in the G01 M40i, it was great but the F97 (going on 2 years ownership) is kind of raucous and raw. I'm coming from multiple BMW's. My last full on ///M was an e92 ZCP. ///M Cars have a different character, they aren't for everybody. It's not always about the outright speed, but the handling, albeit stiffer, serves it's purpose as a dual role car.
