Thank-you so much for this feed. I have a vw t5 camper on the shuttle bus that has an engine heater that I need to modify to heat water. This has been extremely useful. Thankyou again.

Good idea.. I had the advantage that my van was a bus, and already had the heating in the rear so when it heated the engine and the pump would pump it through the rear heater as well.. But YES, it is endless what you can do with the water heater.. looking forward to this video
Another really useful video Alex thanks, now watch the price of used Webasto hydronic heaters go through the roof as everyone scrambles to buy one to convert to heating there on board hot water 😊
Glad it was helpful. I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened! I probably purchased these heaters around July August last year and only finally got round to fitting them. But I have seen the price has gone up a bit since I got them
Lots of options out there for “wet heating” systems. Normally you need to make coolant loop and have hot air matrix for hot air or a plated heat exchanger for water
I can imagine this would be more efficient then leaving the engine idling to defrost the car/van since the heater is actually designed to transfer heat into the coolant, where as your engine is designed to produce power from the fuel, and about 65% of the heat leaves through the exhaust while only 5-8% is absorbed into the coolant, the other 27-30% is turned into motion, although I can imagine at idle the thermal efficiency of an engine isn't 27-30% (the amount of energy turned into motion)
This more or less that’s the main reason for the units. To heat coolant faster for the cabin blower. I however use it for other option which is heating the engine for cold weather
It’s a simple concept but can be a little bit more difficult to implement. Pretty much the heater is designed to heat the coolant running through the engine, heating that coolant in turn heats up the engine block. Same principle applies for the floor. You would heat the coolant pipes running through the floor you installed and that in turn would the heat up the floor itself. Implementing it will be a bit more difficult as it will need maybe additional pumps and Valves so you can turn it on and off. I would recommend checking out “freedom strider” Channel because that is exactly what they have done with there’s
@@MispronouncedAdventures Yes it will be interesting to see where you can tap into the coolant system. I've got to find the right place to tap into my Peugeot Boxers coolant system.
Great! I had similar heater D5WZ on my previous van MB Vito, very helpful here in Estonia, now i have Ford Transit Custom Y2018 and i am very interested where did you connected the hoses to Ford engine.
The connections I got off the official uk Ford eBay store. I think the parts I specifically use were for a Ford focus but it seems to use the same connectors across many of their engines.
Hi thanks for the video , when you connect the signal from the w bus controller and it turns on , do you leave it connected and it automatically turns off at 80 degrees ish or do you have to manually turn it off by disconnecting the w bus 12v signal ? Thanks in advance
@@MispronouncedAdventures Thanks very much. So if I use a 7 day timer, so long as it has 12v going to the relay, when it ‘Switches’ the 12v coming out should be fine. Very little current and the relay is good for up to 16 Amps
Yeah, I do that all the time, they are designed to be a parking heater ( no engine ) or an auxiliary heater ( engine running ) for extra heat. important that are plumbed in the right way to the direct of flow is the same.
It’s probably not locked to the Land Rover wiring, the Land Rover wring still communicated via the W-bus one way or another However, the issue may have come across as you’re locked out of the heater due to a number of failed starts or fault, needs to be reset via the Webasto diagnostic software. I need to learn how to make the connection cable myself.

butlertechnik.com is probably your best option for spares, they sell every component of the heater. However they are at Webasto retail prices. But the glow plugs and gaskets are the not expensive, Or you could buy an entire secondhand spare heater
I’ve played with Top Z as well. It’s more or less the same as this model. The 2 pin plug will be power and the 6 pin will be comms. But only a few of that pins are needs. Getting yourself the same little comms box controller I have should get it working. Unless it’s a really old model of the Top Z which can just be start with power on a particular pin and doesn’t need the communication signal
Definitely could do, quite a few people use hydronic heating systems for their hot water. It wouldn’t even need to be the spare unit. I could just add a plated heat exchanger to the existing one loop for the engine ( which I have thought about, but the logistics of that coolant pipe routing, make it near impossible with the van already built ) However, for me, the diesel heater is on most evenings and overnight in the winter when I’m gonna be wanting to make hot water for the shower

@mrmotofy my Webasto Thermo top V is 9003466E ( however, that might be specific to the particular model of land Rover as it’s factory fitted ) as there are definitely multiple variations of the same heater. FORD parts. #1804871 - which was the right angle quick connect coolant hose fitting for connecting the cabin heater loop to the heater via a normal coolant point. #2073202 - is a normal heater matrix connector with two sides ( I only use one side) which allows me to connect a generic coolant hose to a quick connect coolant fitting to join the heater back to the coolant loop

The emulator was working (led light flashing) but the unit did not boot up. i later saw in the w-bus emulator description that it was only working on evo 2017 models. what should i do?
You could it in anything with a coolant loop. Not sure why you would want to in a Nissan leaf being an EV. I didn’t think leaf batteries had an integrated coolant loop like some other EV
Well yes. But doing on a bench test with no fuel to test the glow plug and communication box works isn’t going to do any damage. Even it’s combustion attempt with a tiny amount of fuel I didn’t realise within the line isn’t gonna get the burn chamber or the heat exchanger warm at all
@@MispronouncedAdventures I'm not sure that's correct. When it's firing it will get hot. It should shut down if the temperature rises past its parameters. Think I’ll just do what you did and wire it in separately, I don’t think it’ll be to easily coding and buying lots of control modules. It just needs to do me 4 months till I get some money together.
I honestly can’t thank you enough. I owe you a drink for sure
It would be awesome if you could post in description the part numbers and vehicle info so one can search for them knowing they're getting the same thing
As in the Ford connections I used?
@@MispronouncedAdventures The heater p/n and any of the Ford #'s sure
@mrmotofy my Webasto Thermo top V is 9003466E ( however, that might be specific to the particular model of land Rover as it’s factory fitted ) as there are definitely multiple variations of the same heater.
FORD parts.
#1804871 - which was the right angle quick connect coolant hose fitting for connecting the cabin heater loop to the heater via a normal coolant point.
#2073202 - is a normal heater matrix connector with two sides ( I only use one side) which allows me to connect a generic coolant hose to a quick connect coolant fitting to join the heater back to the coolant loop
Have you got a link for the communication unit please

@4m40s forgets to add parents are defo not in right now* :)
They actually were at that time, because you can hear I think my mum doing something in the background of the video at the timestamp 😂😂
@@MispronouncedAdventures jesus christ! :) only came across your channel when searching about retro fitting these 1st one popped up subbed to you anyway....expect a future barrage of questions :) will get a look through a chink of your content (inc general van stuff) later intend fitting one of these to master WVO on commonrail engines (already done so on VE pump and PD Vags so far but decided fitting one of these 1st would defo be the way to go with commonrail engines. Keeping ahead of the EV push/curve hopefully for the rest of my life :)
Great units they were Webastos been using it from my third winter now in the Arctic
Hi,can anyone recommend an appropriate chinese fuel pump to replace the the original for TT V
You might struggle to find a Chinese fuel pump for its as if I remember correctly the TT V uses .42 pump. ( most Chinese are .16 or .22 )?
, I don’t know your circumstances or your location but It might be worth eBay for a secondhand version ( if you can find the park code ) , or buy an entire spare unit with pump of eBay
@@MispronouncedAdventures Thanks for replying back
I'm hoping to fit a TTV to a 1999 transit(smiley) i have the unit but minus the fuel pump, most 2nd hand ones dont, those selling the correct pumps(2nd hand) are asking for more money than the unit itself
So,being on a budget i thought i'd search for a chinese replacement,yes most seem to be .16 .22,after that theres a ,28 or a .65,so still a matter of over/under fueling problems
SE UK here
Could you cobble a Chinese diesel heater controller/board to run it?
Unfortunately no, whilst there are similar in someway. Glow plug, fan motor, dosing plug, temperature sensor and so on. They run completely different.
However David Mcluckie’s TH-cam channel he has a project replacing the original board with a custom one
Is there any chance of a review on your water hester from Chinese diesel heater setup now you’ve had a chance to live with it? Love the channel. 👍🏻
That’s a good idea it’s could probably do with a year of use video. basically it’s been brilliant and just has work and done exactly what it says on the box since day one
@@MispronouncedAdventures I’m v tempted to get one myself but would need a device from that Aussie lad as well I guess? What’s it called? The one that enabled Bluetooth and that? Anyway. Would be cool to hear your thoughts.
You definitely don’t need the afterburner made by Rey ( Aussie guy ) for the water heater System. However the afterburner control unit does make the Chinese diesel heater so much better
I recently bought a thermo top EVO from somewhere between 2018 and 2020. Got a w-bus emulator and wired everything up. The emulator was working (led light flashing) but the unit did not boot up. i later saw in the w-bus emulator description that it was only working on evo 2017 models. what should i do?
Interesting
Glad you think so. I definitely found it interesting taking them apart and getting them working
It will be nice a hotwater bench test if you can... thanks
Sounds like a plan. I think I will try and get the parts to do it
where did it come from ?
eBay scrapyard
yay
💙👊😎
Cheers
HOT WATER YES PLEASE
Looks like it’s a popular request I will try and sort out parts for it for the future
install it in a nissan leaf
You could it in anything with a coolant loop. Not sure why you would want to in a Nissan leaf being an EV. I didn’t think leaf batteries had an integrated coolant loop like some other EV
@@MispronouncedAdventures my 2011 Nissan leaf heater has failed. it works by heats water in a loop.
@CrashUK28 ah I see, that makes more sense then
I'm none the wiser Alex....but I'm sure you know what your doing 😏
Wago is german. The W is pronounced as a V. Vago
Thank you for information. At least the channel lives up to its name
Running it dry is a bad idea.
Maybe grab a bucket of water to put your inlet, and outlet hoses in when you test? Might save you a cracked heater. My manual seems very concerned about running it dry. They make it a point to go over it several times.

The video is titled INSTALL!. THUMBS DOWN
In 3 years and 41k views no one’s else mentioned it like that. I can see where you coming from but It’s a two part video of an install of an engine pre heater. Part 1 one is getting the older units working, part 2 is retro fitting the unit.
@MispronouncedAdventures good info. Necessary even. But mistitled, watched the whole video and got nothing on install.
@ the title was named looking at the bigger picture, the overall project, then the specific use of the word. But I can see your viewpoint if you’re specifically searching what is actually covered in part two.
Processed generally pretty simple. hardest bit usually is running the coolant lines
