    About 10 years ago, I use to primitive camp during hunting season, far, far, FAR back in the woods at a campground. You had to bring in water, a sewage dump tank, and a generator to recharge your batteries. I'd put 4 of those 55 gallon drums in the bed of my truck on their side with that bung and a faucet screwed directly into it, and I'd use a 12 rv water pump to pull out the water when the rv needed refilled. I stayed a month at a time, only leaving for food and clothes washing. (26ft KZ Sportsman 258TB). Those fine thread bungs usually are pipe thread and a simple faucet would crew right in that center hole. At least, mine did. Old drums I got were former food coloring from a local plant, so washing them well for potable water was good. But, just to be sure, I had a reverse osmosis filter system in the rv already, so I could fill from a local creek. Ah, the days I had using those old blue drums. They ARE thick walled. Never busted one, even on those bumpy roads that never got scraped after logging made them a mess. My 04 Z71 loved those 4 drums filled and the rv tongue weight...lol. 8 miles of dirt and mud and rocks protruding up with all that weight and 900 pounds of tongue weight on my weight distribution hitch. Fun trip with 4 full drums and that tongue. Probably far more than the truck was rated for. But, it was, as Eric says, "Chevy THUNDER", except it was GMC, and they're, Professional Grade. LOL. ANYWAY, saw your drum and it brought back those memories. Memories is all we got when you're old...LOL. Take care, Mrs O and don't let Eric get away with anything.

    • @TimfromAlabama
      @TimfromAlabama 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@josephking6515Yeah, it wasn't so successful. But, it was alone time with myself and God in nature. And the wife got her time to clean the house and shop and all the other things I don't like doing...lol. I had to make sure I didn't stink, though. And there's only so much food you can carry along when you're already overloaded by a few thousand pounds. 5.3L Z71 is only rated for 1500 pounds in the bed, and 7200 pounds towing. And I'm carrying 1800 plus in the bed of just water drums, plus the 900 plus pounds of tongue weight, and I have no idea how much that pallet jack battery weighed but it was 4 cells of 3 volts, and was 4 feet wide, 2 feet tall, and 16 inches deep sitting on the tongue of the rv. Plus 4-30 pound LP tanks, 2-20 pound tanks, and 1-40 pound tank in the bed, too. Not to mention the 6,000 pounds of rv, and a 5x8 utility trailer I pulled behind the travel trailer on a hitch I had installed that's filled with a 3500 watt generator, and as much firewood as I could fit on it (est. 3,000 pounds there). I had to use an infrared heater for heat in the rv since the main built in units burn LP gas at only about 40% efficiency, and they pull 12v power off the batteries. I came prepared. I usually had a couple youth boys who'd come join me on hunts so I could teach them how. And they'd stay a night or two, so feeding a teenager, much less 2 bottomless pits...need I say more? LOL (btw...they measured me from front bumper to rear ramp on the utility trailer at just over 65 feet and a few inches long. I'm WAY overloaded. Cost me 2 transmissions but, hey, I had fun, and would put as much as 1,500 miles on that truck without touching a paved road during those times.)

    Just wanted to thank you for the trick of getting the bulkhead fitting into position using steel wire and a magnet. It's one of those really clever things that seem obvious once you see somebody do it, but I never would have thought of it a million years. Beats the heck out of what I had been doing. Good evening from Wyoming County! have 6 of these rain barrels at our house. Wife plants 150 Dahlia bulbs each year ( yup retired mechanic, go figure). I thread a regular 1/2 0r 3/4 ball valve spigot in the plastic. They a re thick enough to tighten and seal with a little sealant on the threads. Been using them for a least 5 years. Use an electric transfer pump on a hose to water plants. The barrels are filled by the house and garage gutters.

    I think the very inner part of the bung can be drilled out so you can put a tyre (tire) valve stem in there so you can pressurise (pressurize) the drum. Helps to push out the highly viscous liquids like diff oil or as in my experience 52 years ago working in a garage after school a detergent we sold. It was especially thick during the winter months and needed quite a few psi to help it to vacate the drum.

    Great idea. Did something similar to rig up a portable tank for water to supply a pressure washer at motocross races when my son was racing. Had a deep cycle 12 V battery and a cheap RV water supply pump to keep the pressure washer primed. In retrospect I would have preferred the barrel to the square plastic tank I got from Tractor Supply. Oh, and I also used Teflon tape. Lots and lots and lots of it.

    I put my barrel on top of a stand so the hose can connect at the bottom. It also works just sitting on a couple 2-by’s on the back of the truck to water plants, but mostly I use a pump for irrigating from the truck bed and get the job done faster.

      Yeah, like I mentioned in the video the way I need to move these is upright so this is what I chose. But the bung method works also, especially if you need to use the drums for something else.

    smart way of getting the fitting down inside the barrel. To bad those fittings are made so poorly even for that price point.

    How in the world would you get the filter on the inside off the barrel to change it when it gets clogged with debris unless you backflush it.
    I would have put the filter on the OUTSIDE of the barrel.
    Just my opinion.
    Opinions may vary😊

    • @NBSV1
      @NBSV1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You wouldn’t be able to put the valve on the outside if you put the filter on the outside.
      Since the bung isn’t on the bottom if you’ve got enough debris in the tank to plug up the filter then it’s time to just replace the barrel since it’s got a bunch of debris in the bottom.

    Get name brand plumbing parts like Nibco, Watts, Wilkins for brass and Spears, Charlotte pipe, for plastic.

    Dude..just use a 3/4 npt pipe tap and a boiler drain with some sealant... done. You wont be happy with that filter always getting clogged either. 🎩🌄🇺🇸
