I want to seriously thank you for this video. It completely saved me from an epic mental breakdown, and i was able to bypass a faulty windows install!! Thank you!!
Your video is definitely a lifesaver. I am not an advanced tech savvy person. I went into my bios. Tried to change the graphics settings because it's the AMD Ryzen 5600G and not all of the ram is showing in my system and after I did that my monitor would not register any graphics and would shut off and I couldn't get my monitor to wake up turn the system off, turn the system back on still the same thing. But now that I know that MSI and any line of MSI motherboards, my motherboard is the MSI b450 tomahawk Max can be reset. It's a lifesaver. It restored everything on my system back to the way that it came. I nearly bought a new motherboard just because of this and I have since canceled that order cuz now I don't need to change it now. I've learned something new, but these types of videos are very important for people like me who only know the basics and are not knowledgeable about advanced technology.
As I was saying in my comment about not all the ram is registering in my system I had a 3400 g which also didn't show all of the ram was being used but now with my 5600 g it's still not showing all as used. Is it possible for you to make a video explaining and showing how to optimize the BIOS so that the computer system shows all the ram is being used. My system shows 24 GB installed but says 19.9 GB usable.
Thank you so much!! I came from another video on troubleshooting a pc that isnt displaying anything on my monitor and this is what fixed it!! My power flickered and i'd been troubleshooting for days as to why my pc was doing this and this is what fixed it! Thank you for such clear videos that really go step by step!!
Recently built a new PC and it would not boot at all. Made sure all connections were correct and tight....still no boot. Removed CMOS battery and waited two minutes, shorted the clear CMOS pins, reinserted CMOS battery and it booted! So even if your installed a brand new motherboard, first thing you should do is follow the procedure to reset the BIOS by clearing CMOS. (And if it still won't boot, replace the CMOS battery with a new one)
Thank you so much! My blood pressure spiked because I thought I broke my PC after doing a deep clean. The power light was flashing yellow and it would not start up. After replacing the CMOS it started up!
Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I always have 2032 batteries here to swap on my Sega Saturn, but it never dawned on me to replace the one in my PC lol.

For the boys with ASUS TUF GAMING motherboards, you don't need to open your PC to reset your BIOS. Just use their Flashback feature and read manual online for super easy BIOS reset with USB and BIOS button in the back. Maybe other manufacturers have the same useful feature, so you don't need to disassembly your whole PC to reset your BIOS and it's settings.
New here, watched this video because ASUS just asked if I had tried resetting the CMOS. New B660-PLUS D4 board, new 2 x 8GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE LPX DDR4 3200MHz memory, new intel i5-12400F 12th GEN CPU. Existing MSI GTX 1050Ti graphics card, existing COOLMAX CUG-950B (model T-950B) - which I tested all pins with a volt meter and they are within tolerance. I put everything together and absolutely nothing. Any advice appreciated! EDIT: Ooops, sorry, I now see that you charge for support which is fully understandable. At least I now know about the battery removal trick. Thank you.
Yeah dude this literally resolved my issue.. I had my pc really acting up (file icons missing/ full screen video playback off centered / ect) & I went to tryn system restore & it just stayed stuck & forced me to hard reset… after that I had a pc that wouldn’t boot up or even show the f2 options on startup it was just the intel screen and that’s it… I thought i was seriously going to need to buy a new pc … until I tried this method & I actually got my computer back up & didn’t even have to install windows again either!! 😊
No Signal on HDMI monitor resolved using this method. Seriously makes you think you have a bad video card. Just removing and placing back battery didn't do. Replaced the battery and shorting those JBAT prongs (mine had a different name) resolved the issue. Image is back on my monitor.
So I did a thermal paste replacement on my Dell Optiplex 3020 MT. Only things I changed was cmos battery. Motherboard shoes red light doesn’t blink and power supply shoes yellow on the back but doesn’t blink. Everything works fine before I took it apart. The power button won’t turn white but when I plug in the psu cord the cpu fan turns on and spins. I did the jumper and cleared cmos multiple times. I am having a headache atm..

Mike, if you have already upgraded the BIOS, won't you have to go back and do that again since the motherboard presumably returns to what it was like coming out of the factory or is it only the custom settings you've made to the BIOS which are returned to factory defaults?
Hi Mike, New to your channel. My Win 10 took ages to restart, so I powered it down using the power button (pressed for 5 secs). Now my computer gets stuck on boot up Windows logo and the spinning circle. First PC repair guy I had visit, claims it's a bios issue. Do you have any thoughts? Scared of messing up my machine. Many thanks for your time.
sounds like either a bad boot sector on the drive or the drive is failing maybe. could be the motherboard but the really slow shutdown normally means windows can't right the shutdown data to the drive. so probably a dead or dying disk drive i would say
DId you say guitar plug? or pluck? Never heard that one before.... its called a guitar pick! In Canada anyway! LOL.... Anyway, awesome video.. I saved it as there is some info in here I haven't heard before about when changing ram. Thanks!
Note that the information in this video is slightly outdated. On a modern system with UEFI, the BIOS settings are actually stored in true nonvolatile memory (most often SPI NOR flash). The battery is only for keeping the motherboard's clock running while the system is unpowered. Clearing the NVRAM is something the BIOS has to do actively - because this advice is still so prevalent, many motherboard makers emulate "CMOS clear" behavior when an invalid RTC date is detected, but this shouldn't be relied upon - instead, use the dedicated NVRAM reset jumper or button on the board, as described in the board's documentation (some systems may also require powering on the system with the jumper in place before the NVRAM will clear - again, see your board's manual to see if this is necessary). Pulling the battery may fail to reset settings even if you're careful to drain residual electricity, because the NVRAM itself isn't battery-backed.
My dc 7800 CMT automatically starts as soon as I turn on the power supply, despite not pressing the power button. Also the CMOS data gets lost/corrupted every time the PSU is switched off/on (looks like the CR 2032 batt no longer sustains CMOS, even it's brand new giving full 3V). At start it displays "CMOS CHECKSUM ERROR". Moreover, when I put it into sleep mode from the OS and later try to wake it up it won't and the CPU fan starts spinning with full speed. What could be causing all this?
G'morning Mike. I would need to reset before trying this...if I try this. (dadgum curiosity) So I have 32g 2666 (19-19-19-43) 2x16 (GSkill Aegis) laying around from a previous system. Also have 32g 3600 (16-18-18-38) 4x8 (Corsair Ballistix) in my current system. If I could get them to play together nice,...I have 4 slots...would 48g at slower speed be better than 32g at faster speeds? CPUZ shows a timing table for the 3600 to match the 2666 (19-19-19-43) Reset and just plug them in, let the board sort it out or will I need to fiddle with stuff in the bios?
@@mikesunboxing Interesting. I'm on it now, I just set 2666 in the bios and didn't mess with the timings. CPUz now shows 48G at 1333 16-18-18-38-62. Seems to be running fine. ASRock B550M/ac...XMP set to auto. (Most things set to auto) I thought it would use the cl19 of the Gskill. As far as "better" than 32g at 3600 I don't know yet. Right now I have my browser open, Photoshop with a 4K image, Daz Studio, processing a 4K 3D image, and HWinfo running...says I have 38G free. Edit, I gained 452 points in CinebenchR23.

If I could get them to play together nice,...I have 4 slots...would 48g at slower speed be better than 32g at faster speeds?
CPUZ shows a timing table for the 3600 to match the 2666 (19-19-19-43)
Reset and just plug them in, let the board sort it out or will I need to fiddle with stuff in the bios?
i would set the BIOS to ddr4 2666 cl 19 they should if theory work together at that speed - fingers crossed
@@mikesunboxing I'll give it a shot tomorrow see what happens.
Very easy ro follow. Sadly didnt fix my problem though and atill the motherboard vga light comes on and the pc beeps at me and i gwt black screen. Can not get any further than this. Have checked everything.
hope you manage to fix it
@@mikesunboxing I did, and it turned out to be something really stupid
@@RiverFox_YT you have to share the details 🙂
@@RiverFox_YTbro what was the problem
There is a correct position for the '+' side of the cmos battery?
almost every board i have seen has the + side facing out
U save my life again just failed overclocking corsair Vengeance lpx 3200mhz Samsung b die thank you so much
Glad it helped you :-)
Can I change it while the computer is on or is it not recommended? Could a dying CMOS battery also cause a blue screen?
yes and yes
Very clear, complete instrux, thank you!!
Hey,good content. What if it's a laptop with CMOS error 502 . How will I know the jumper in an hp?
that is a corrupted bios checksum the jumper should be labelled up or check the motherboards documentation
Mike I have one question what do U do at the jbat1 can U explain a little easier please and thank you
the battery is removed to allow the cmos settings to be erased. The battery can allow the cmos to retain info during power off
I have z490H motherboard with intel i3 10100 my motherboard is second hand and it doesnt boot up it only show the RGB lights but it doesnt turn on can you please help.

Can you please do and video legacy to UEFI for Windows 11 thanks
i'll see what i can do
I did this and it went black screen I don’t know what to do … I did every tricks nothing worked
Is it safe to reset the bios with the PC plugged in with the power supply button on but the PC is turned off?
There might still be standby power going through the system so the reset won’t happen
@@mikesunboxing Thanks for the quick reply, but I was more so asking because I was curious if any damage could occur on the MB while clearing the CMOS without turning off the power supply or unplugging it but having the PC off via the power button that just simply shuts down the PC
will this possibly fix the “restart and select proper boot device”?
it might do, but likely you need to look at the boot order or you could have a dead drive
@@mikesunboxing it worked, just hope it doesn’t happen again.
Thanks bro🙏🙏🙏
No problem
Thanks bro
No problem
Please fix the volume. It is too low. Thanks
You can use the CMOS battery to reset the password in older PCs right?
sometimes yes
I was getting a cpu fan error and a code that said b1initualizedlibraryfailed 0x0000001 I replaced the battery and did exactly what you did in this video and it got rid of the fan error but the other code keeps showing. I keep trying to change the date and time in bios but it keeps resetting

You're welcome
My CMOS battery is soldered in place I have a Lenovo g50-45
that is going to make things a lot more difficult, there should be a cmos reset pin though
hi mike . can i change the battery with the computer running ? that way the bios won't need to be set? or is there any other way around resetting the bios with computer off? cheers
yes the battery is used to store the data when the power is off
@@mikesunboxing how long if power off does it take to reset? cheers
@@jlindell6532 few seconds or up to 30 minutes or more depending on lots of factors
THANK.YOU.
I had fast boot on and I couldn’t boot my hard drive.
Mike if i want to upgrade a cpu say from 5600x to 5950x do i need to do this first before inserting the 5950x? thanks
no that should not be necessary
I upgraded from 5600 to 5900x and now the VGA light stays on? Should this resolve the issue?
