    I went to the Pergamon Museum in E. Berlin at the time. This is incredible to see. You might want to look up the movies people took of it here too. Even has the real walls of Babylon in colbalt blue with lions and dragons..just so much there to behold. I was so blown away.

    I read through your letter again and come across the Nike of Samothrace, which is certainly wonderful - imagine about twenty such 8-foot women among them, completely preserved, IN the frieze of Pergamon.
    Everything full of furious vehemence and in the grandest style. Who turns a good piece of art history upside down

    Pergamon The Altar of Zeus or Zeus Altar is a marble monumental religious structure built in the 2nd century BC by the Attalos dynasty, which ruled the Pergamon Kingdom in the ancient city of Pergamon in the north-western Anatolia. The horseshoe form is located on the Acropolis of Bergama. It has a depth of 35.64 m and a depth of 33.4 m. The stairs at the front of the building are 20 meters wide.
    The frescoes on the marble cladding outside and inside are among the most important works of art history. Facade frescoes tell the story of the war between the gods of Olympos and Giants-Gigants of the ancient Hellenic world, and the frescoes in the inner space, the tale of Pergamon's Telefos.
    The remnants of this magnificent building were taken by the German engineer Carl Humann in the 1870s to the Prussia of that time. Today it is on display at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin and is visited by thousands of people every year. So I mean, this structure has been stolen by German archaeologists from Turkey.

      Another stolen structure from the Germans, II. The Pergamon Temple of Athena, belonging to the Eumenes period (197 - 159 BC), is located in the Berlin Museum.

      but not from Bergama, yet another work stolen from Turkey. In the ancient city of Aphrodisias near Aydin Geyre Dr. During the excavations carried out under the direction of Kenan Erim, a marble head was found in the pool in Tiberius Portik in 1989. The head was discovered in 1904 during the excavations conducted by the French archaeologist Paul Gaudin, and was found to have been smuggled abroad and later belonged to the body sold to the Berlin Pergamon Museum.

    • @deadmike2
      @deadmike2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      its not stealing when the owner agrees the exchange. besides, without the "theft", all these monumentals would be gone with the wind or at least in a bad condition, just like the rest of bergama because for a long time turkey didnt care about those works

    • @egelisk4943
      @egelisk4943 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is stealing. These works are priceless works of our ancestors. The exhange was made by one person, the sultan himself who just wanted more money for his economically declining Empire. The people back then had no voice in this matter whatsoever. If needed, the price that was paid back then can be given back in exchange of these ancient works so it can be back to where it belongs, back to the city of Pergamon. Back to Anatolia and the Anatolians.

    Where was the brass bull located at the altar?

    • @2ndClemens
      @2ndClemens  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Feares Monkeyes
      I'm neither an archaeologist nor a historian (just a humble graphic designer) but as far as I know there is no evidence if or where the bull was situated on the altar. We learn from the book of revelations that Antipas was martyred at Pergamon but that's about it. Centuries later, when people became more interested in the life of early Christians and even started praying to them (in Antipas' case for dental health), the legend of the brazen bull was told. But still there was no mention of this having happened at the altar. In fact at this time the altar was long destroyed, so nobody remembered it and could fit it into the legend. I think commonly the romans liked large audiences for their sadistic man-slaughtering events, and the altar seems a bit unsuitable for this, so it is probably more realistic that Antipas was killed in one of the theatres?
      Since the discovery and reconstruction of the altar about 150 years ago, it became a huge symbol for Zeus worship so many evangelists chose it as the proper setting for the legend, but I think it was more by inspiration than by historic evidence. Again, this is how I understand things - all or some of this may be incorrect.

    • @fearmonkey
      @fearmonkey 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I think that's a great answer. I always wondered about the Bull. I used to wonder why a bull (at an altar for Zeus), but there is the story of Zeus turning into a bull to woo women so maybe it could have happened there.

    Oh my God l had dreams, recurring dreams about visiting this temple and always woke up with such deep sadness that l couldn't shake it for ours. I wonder how 358 connects to it cause those three numbers were always part of this recurring dream. There should be a perfectly round dish elevated in a highly decorative holder at the last building and fire should be a 24/7 on that ... So strange just talking about it makes l feel a debilitating sadness

    Revelation‬ ‭2:12-17‬ ‭NLT‬‬
    *The Message to the Church in Pergamum*
    Write this letter to the angel of the church in Pergamum. This is the message from the one with the sharp two-edged sword:
    I know that you live in the city where Satan has his throne, yet you have remained loyal to me. You refused to deny me even when Antipas, my faithful witness, was martyred among you there in Satan’s city.
    But I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin. In a similar way, you have some Nicolaitans among you who follow the same teaching. Repent of your sin, or I will come to you suddenly and fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
    Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.

    Germany should give back the Pergamon Altar, it is ridiculous to say that the agreements are legal, it is ridiculous to characterize the agreement with a tyrant as legal. This is the legacy of a different world that Germany should not take, the German authorities should stop insisting.
    Believe me, the return of the Pergamon Altar will glorify Germany and therefore the German people. Pergamon Altar creates wounds in Germany every day it is not returned and it bleeds Germany from the wounds that have already been opened.
    The German authorities must now hear the horrible voice in the Berlin Museum, and put an end to this scream.
