My brother in law is retired engineer. He is very smart and humble. They saved and invested and is financially set. Has two cars, a new lexus ES and a 1994 Toyota Camry he bought super used for $3,000. He actually spent $1,200 for a recent paint job. Cracks me up that the camry is his preferred vehicle to run around town and everywhere with (400,000 miles with a trunk full of tools just in case to fix stuff). The safer and more fuel efficient Lexus is mainly for Church and looking clean trips.

I do the same thing except with 2004 Camry and a 2013 challenger. Camry is my favorite never dies, rust bucket.
My dad put 439k on his 1998 Toyota Corolla. A massive tree fell on it during a snow storm and it was completely totaled. Despite the tree pretty much splitting the car in half- the engine still started before they towed it away

My Lexus ES 330 2004 - has 369,000 miles and is driving like a dream- everything is working perfectly

Dad used to drive old Buicks with the 3800 engines. They didnt get good gas mileage but were super reliable. He now drives a 25 year old Olds also with V6. Still runs fantastic!
Yes we had a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3800 engine, gas mpg was good at 24 city & 30 highway, great riding reliable vehicles
Except for transmission but them engines are absolute tanks
My dad still drives a 92 park Avenue 3.8 with the supercharger. He has 3 spare superchargers in his garage to switch them out cuz the engine will go forever otherwise.
We had two Pontiacs with the 3800. They both got 28 mpg and up on the road 18 in mixed driving. The transmission on both went out and would cost more than the cars value to repair. If I could find any GM product with 3.8 in it I would buy it.
I had one of those transverse V6's myself. Ran forever.
2000 Toyota Camry here. 200k miles. The thing has overheated once with a blown hose on the interstate and it still rocks solid after a hose replacement. I love the old Camrys. Super reliable. Great on gas. Comfortable and easy to drive.
We have a 1998 4-runner and it is still running fine with about 200,000 miles on it. Everything still works on it and it still looks so good we have had people roll their windows down at a stop sign to say how great the ‘98 4 runner still looks.

My 1998 no rust Sienna runs soo well that I just replaced weeping engine oil seals timing belt, tensioner, cam seals, waterpump and gasketing. I bought my Scooby van 8yrs ago will my last $2k to make due and ended up slowly DIY mechanically restoring it, with disabilities. Any repairs I put into my van has paid me back ten fold with astonishing reliability.
That 1993 Camry's AC system probably uses R12. Those old R12 systems were fantastic! Meat locker cold!
I daily drive my 99 Pathfinder with 280k miles. I wish Nissan (and Honda, Mitsubishi and even Toyota) still built vehicles like they did in the 90s.

Had a 85 Tercel for 13 years. Only had to replace the alternator and radiator when it was 12 and 13 years old. A quality car.
Scotty seems to have more energy than most people half his age.

Had a 1998 Camry with a 2.2 liter for about eleven years. Currently own a 2007 4RUNNER V6 and I don't regret either one!
An old mentor told me that after 5 yrs, one should sell their cars due to upcoming maintenamce costs after 5 yrs of car use.
Can u tell me how do u maintain old cars properly and are maintenance costs stull worth it vs buying new ones?
@@jaydee11.11 In eleven years besides changing the oil the only thing I replaced on my Camry was the radiator and the starter. I traded it in with 207,000 some odd miles. My 4RUNNER has over 170,000 miles and runs like a champ. From what I understand Toyota makes their own parts and makes them in small batches which results in better quality control. Their fit and finish is world class among other things. Maybe whoever told you to sell a vehicle after five years due to maintenance cost increase never owned a Toyota?
I've had my 2003 VW GTI VR6 for 22 and a half years so far (original owner, purchased October 2002 new), with NO major issues! This German panzer tank of a car has been my daily driver all these years, and i'm shocked at it's reliability! Still has the original timing chains too, and the engine purrs! The 2.8L naturally aspirated 24v VR6 has to be VW's best engine ever made, when it comes to reliability!
Bought a 99 4cyl Camry new back in the day and lasted my 20 years without issues. Then bought a 2020 camry which am happy with and hope to keep as long.
I got a 96 Camry and I wouldn’t change it for anything I love that car

My mom had a 98 4Runner. Thing was reliable as hell. We had that thing for over 20 years and it still ran beautifully. We rarely brought it to the shop. We eneded up handing it to my uncle for whatever reason and he ended up rolling it and it still works just fine🤣

I have a 1999 Toyota Camry with 180k miles, boy that thing drives like a dream a/c blows very cold . My 18 year old son is driving it now giving it hell and it just keeps going. Toyota makes the best cars.
My 2007 Camry had 473,000 miles on it before it was rear ended.
Thats great news, my inherited from my mother 2007 2.2 litre has 187000kms so plenty of life left. I’m using it increasingly as my daily runabout in preference to my LR4
Japanese cars built in the 80s to early 2000 are still running and built to last
I worked for an automotive supplier that built the cv joints for the Camry. That generation was built as a companion to the Lexus. So basically you were getting Lexus mechanicals. I had a 95 and 96. I drove a 2dr with the v6/5 spd. It ran really well. A rust free one is a great teens car.
Yeah I had a 1988 pathfinder 16,000 miles I had it for 31 years. Drive it till the fuel injectors went bad. I donated it
Pathfinders back then didn't have the cvt transmission in it either. They were damn near bulletproof
Before you buy it think 2 things
1- it has spare parts available
2 - after selling the price will decrease more

My first gen Acura Legend would still be my daily if it weren't for having to play junkyard roulette any time something needs replacement.
My 2006 Nissan Xterra finally died last month. Kept overheating. Needed an engine rebuild. Not bad for a car that lasted 18 years.

I have a 06 Altima with a stick shift still going strong original clutch still bone stock only problem so far is cam sensor $29 part .....got it new and hope to have it for another 10+ years

I am from Quebec and what make me sad is that cold and rust is the worst and best enemy of all cars even toyota. They are tanks but not where salt is spraiyed on the streets for 6 months. :/

Yes I have a Yaris 2006. 97 000 km. The clear coat peeled on the top (problem with many) but i don't mind it works great but toyota told me it has 6 months left because of the rusted left side rocker under the back door. If it wasn't fir the rust it would last for years.
If you buy an XTerra or Pathfinder of this generation, install a stand-alone transmission cooler in place of the one integrated in the radiator. The radiators fail all of the time, and they mix the coolant and transmission fluid when they do. The result is a destroyed transmission. When you go to buy a remanufactured automatic transmission for your Nissan SUV, the reman transmissions usually come with new radiators, because that's what causes them to fail. The other problem with these is A/C door actuators. They're pretty expensive to replace and make an incredibly irritating clicking and grinding noise when they fail.
2011 and above were resolved
^This also goes for 3rd gen 4Runners if you are regularly towing/off-roading
My Mom bought a Xterra new 06 & she's still driving it plus living in Florida she got the 2 wheel drive so it was cheaper and more dependable (rear drive).
It is a real truck pannelled as an SUV tall wagon. Most SUVs are cars mocked up with panels. If it is FWD it is likely a car that cosmetically looks like a truck:
Maverick, HHR, CRV....
Not that there's anything wrong with that, but truck mechanicals last far longer than mist car guts. If you actually used these car SUV/pocket trucks the way they get used in commercials they'd be ragged out in 50k.
Finally talked my dad into selling me the 1992 4 cylinder camry he bought brand new. Rarely would get driven. Has 166,000 miles. Still all original. No problems. Getting 26 mpg too. Plan on getting another 100,000 miles out of it.

My friend had a 97 4RUNNER that thing still running because he bought it from my other friend and he is a handy man 🤠 he took care it good that is why it still standing.

I worked at the Smyrna TN Nissan plant and we ran the Xterra down the line beside the Altima line. They had sent the Sentra to the Mexico plant so we could build the Xterra. The first Xterra’s were under powered with a four cylinder engine
I had a 2004 4 Runner. I was on my way to the east coast when the rear stabilizer rusted off the frame. The frame was rusted through. It did run well, I liked the car, but beware of certain years where Toyota used sub standard steel for their frames.

The best solution to longevity of most of the cars, is the manual transmission and will go forever.

Dude who runs a store where I live has a 09 highlander with 420,000 miles changed the water pump and starter once original powertrain.
With the inflation that we're going through right now.Especially in california, these older vehicles with 100k plus are going for more than ten thousand dollars.
As I am a Mazda person, my father was a Camry person. Had owned Camry's from at least '88 until he couldn't drive anymore, two years ago. My daughter is driving my mom's '08 4runner, purchased new, only 110k on it. It was gifted to her in '21 when my mom passed. Still like new.
Got 21 years and 140,000 miles and 03 Green Cavalier Coupe. I love my Chevrolet. Recommendd 5w30 convential. I run 10w40 synthetic. Puurs and takes this 2.2l dohc to 6,800 reguraly.

If there is one thing I miss is hand cranked windows. Yeah, it's inconvenient for rear windows but i prefer manuel for as much as possible

2000 4Runner, running fine - only issue is electronics; elec windows, lower dash lights, temp gauge, radio volume.
Frontiers still have a v6, Yoda went to a turbo 4 banger. I'll take a V6 any day.
I would kill for a brand new 95 Toyota Camry or Avalon made the exact same way today. Absolutely most reliable car ever with nothing to hate other than your in it for the long haul owning one 😅
250K on my 2004 Tacoma and still kicking butt! Still runs like it did 20 years ago.
My brother still uses a 90's Tacoma work truck to this day. It's even seen the Blood and Crip war.

Timing belt engines are more quiet, less complex, easier to work on, the timing belts can last 150k km if you drive reasonably and live in midwrate climate so usually you only need to change it 1 or 2 tines during the whole life if the car.

This old Xterra reminds me of my 2005 Sienna with 252K miles and the same crack in the windshield :)
I missed my 2000 Nissan Xterra that had the 4-cylinder manual transmission.
I still own a 2000 with the v-6 and manual, it has a timing belt and is underpowered as hell but has been super dependable. Sat for 5 years without firing up and a quick jump later it was back on the road.
What do you think of the new Frontier V6.
Toyota dropped there V6.

NZ is considered a hardcore country for vehicles, mainly because it can be summer and snow. And all the other options.
So if you want better made cars, try make the climate like NZ.
I drove a Pathfinder from a customer i was Fun and I still have my 98 Camry wich my dad bought 22years ago i got it 2014 and it is still Strong :)

Hi Scotty, ya I’m still driving a 2006 Honda Accord lx 4cly 116, 400 miles the paint not so nice. Oh well, it still runs mighty . Just oil changes. New 2023 2024 Accords in CA are $38,000😮 to much $$$. 2021 low mileage civic $21,000 it’s crazy! Still waiting for the price to plunge.

I am the original ownr of a 2009 Nissan Maxima with 271,000 miles and it has never had an issue. Love this car and it has saved me a ton of money through out the years. Maxima's

Had 3 of those early 90s Camrys in the family over the years. Broken door handles, electric window failures and oil burning tendencies chased us away. Subarus are all we'll drive.

I had a 2000 Camry that was great for 260k miles. Only problem was that it rotted out from originally being in the north east.
