Good and informative video. For us home mechanics, however, who do not have access to Mercedes official service manuals, we would love to see torque specs and a list of the special tools you use to keep in place the cams before removing them.
First time I've seen the plates fixed that way and I must say I love it! I hate how Mercedes and other companies charge extremely over exuberant prices for these plates that I'm sure are made pennies on the dollars. Thanks so much for showing an easy way to fix this issue.
the head bolts on my r30 m156 went bad a 62k miles. I had aftermarket insurance and the covered everything which included head bolts the hydraulic pump for the suspension and both front struts. afterward the m156 is a dream
as a MB tech i have always wondered what failed inside of these, of course they are cores so i could never take them apart and look. I also do these a ton on the M271 EVO, good to know!
It looks like a tricky job, replacing the head bolts without disturbing the head gasket , was it difficult to clean out the oil from the block holes to prevent hydraulic fracturing?
Thank you for these great videos. I have a 2006 C280 with a 272 engine that has this problem on the left side (driver) cylinder head. The previous owner neglected they car by NOT changing the oil frequently. These multi cam/ flex cam engines need clean oil and correct quantity of oil or they fail in many ways.
Dude your videos are awesome! Help me so much with my c63 head bolt job. Question I have in case you see this, did you put RTV on the new head bolts? Any specific type needed for that? Also, with the cam adjusters, how do you get them back into their correct position if after you take them out, they are slightly misaligned? This happened on my c63 because the hole in the gears isn’t threaded so all I was able to do is stick a 5mm bolt in there to hold them in place however upon removal, they are about 1/8” misaligned. My buddy working on the car with me says they can be payed back into place with a flat head. Just curious if you have any tips or tricks on how to do that without risking damage of the cam adjuster. Thanks!
Yeah, you can almost replace the cam adjusters (Nockenwellenversteller is a much more beautiful word) when you change the oil filter in the M156. 500HP for a naturally aspirated crossplane V8 was probably too much to ask for.

Vin is in the affected range. My main question is when you reinstall the camshafts does the cam holder tool put them back in the correct position as when you removed them?
Hey brother be careful when you remove those head bolts. She got a few miles on her and then damn bolts get so corroded they snap. I seen it it’s a nightmare, god bless and good luck bro.
I am genuinely curious about how the underside if the head bolts corrode, what are they coming into contact with that can make them corrode? Also hopefully the person making the replacement plates for the cam adjuster is making them out of a more durable metal, if so they should be the go to replacement anytime someone works in the cams.
i am in the market for a S 63 or a CL 63 07-10, which years have the least issues, or is it the same , and how many miles is too much to stay away from!!. Thanks
Those bolts look fine. Just some light surface rust. At that rate of corrosion it looks like it would do the same mileage again without causing a problem. But since the covers were coming off anyway it makes sense to do it now.

Yes but the metal is soft and will wear out in another 50-70k miles. The metal in the welding rod is measurably harder and should therefore (in theory) be a big boost to the lifespan of the adjuster.
@@FILTHY-YOGURT That is a good point, but I believe any increase of wear on the pin would be negligible.
