    Somehow, and I am still really not sure how this happened, Mr Bill and Lady Caldwell-Holmes from the Fuel Power TH-cam channel ( / @fuelpower ) and I ended up at Oakley Hall near Basingstoke on 29th September 2022 for the SMMT Drive Day South, where we got to drive and film a number of different cars from different manufacturers, having around just half an hour with each of them to film a review. Naturally, things took a bit of a shambolic turn, as they usually do on this channel...
    The first car was the 2022 Toyota Aygo X 1.0 Edge, based on an entirely different platform from other cars which have previously worn the Aygo name. Be prepared for a canvas sunroof, the good old 1.0 three cylinder engine, pop out rear windows and very little of any interest at all. Nothing untoward, then!

    I like it a lot, not liking the price through, I thought these when I first saw them just looked out of proportion with the bigger wheels but they actually do work rather well when you have seen a couple of examples. As always sir a excellent Review.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes sir, they do have an unusual look to them. The price does seem to have crept up a little bit, doesn't it? I suppose a lot of cars have got surprisingly expensive these days.

    The dark roof lining does make it look claustrophobic. Wonder why they don’t make them white. Would make the cabin much brighter.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, dark headlining seems to be quite common on a lot of cars I filmed on the same day for some reason....

    I had a play with the car configuration on Toyota's website a few weeks ago. I was a little disappointed at the lack of colours available on the base Aygo X: white, silver and black, maybe grey.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I saw a gold one the other day, sir. It's sort of like the MG3 range of colours, I suppose, which is also quite limited.

      On the Toyota website, it gives the option of customising the base model with red or chrome trim at extra cost.

    My Wife's Kia Picanto was an amazing little 1.0 litre City Car. Kia's figures also claimed 58 mpg but we never achived that in 8 years of ownership, the best nudging 55 mpg, but that is absolutely fine for a tiny car that can do any journey as well as a large car. All of these City Cars now seem to be very capable in town and on the motorway. Most of them can also accommodate 4 people quite well also.
    This is no longer a class of Bargain Basement transport for urban environments only.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the Sandero, MG3, Picanto and i10 are no longer just basic transport compared with what came before. The fuel consumption figure from the trip computer is very impressive considering it is a press car.

    Apparently. It’s a city bug jacked. Uses mostly all old drive train. Hmmmmmm. Just lovely. So new chassis platform. Old engine box ? Can we not drive today unless we’re toughened up cladded extra rubber protection

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are very economical and reliable engines, despite the fact that they are a bit old fashioned these days. Yes, the extra cladding seems to be most popular at present.

    We don't get these micro cars in Australia..but I've often thought, being kind, that
    the AYGO name was somewhat ''borrowed'' from the YUGO....A terrible car by all accounts, but with one of the all time great names for a car...a name that I'm sure VW would have liked to possess if they ever had the opportunity to buy Zastava .

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it was a corruption of i-Go, rather than anything to do with Yugo, from what I understand. The MG3 is sold in Australia, from what I remember, not sure about the i10 or the Picanto. There aren't really any others in the class left in this country from what I remember.

    • @planestrainsdogsncars4336
      @planestrainsdogsncars4336 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting My point was Joseph i-Go and Yugo are very close..and I suspect Yugo was there first....and Toyota liked it so much that ''if we change it a little nobody will notice''.

      @@planestrainsdogsncars4336, at the end of the day, sir, there is absolutely no evidence for this one way or the other, so all that we can say about it is mere conjecture.

    The non painted bonnet inside is just cost cutting…..to the extreme…..I, can see no other reason. Seen the same thing on other new budget cars.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that is probably the reason for the unpainted underside of the bonnet. The fact that they offer a warranty of up to ten years on these does suggest that they think it will go the distance, however.

    Is it not a “cross”. Nice looking car but hideously priced and needs a turbo.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

      I have normally heard this referred to as the "Aygo X", but there is the Yaris Cross just above it, so I have no idea, really.

    I feel like the new Aygo has lost it's way. I appreciate the ultra reliable, revvy, raspy engine.
    However, they've made it too heavy. It is no longer a simple car. Too much unnecessary technology to go wrong.
    I don't understand the obsession with crossovers. It looks like an IQ on steroids.
    And those wheels are ridiculous. The tyres will cost a fortune, there may not be budget options available.
    I drive a complete poverty spec '05 C1 & achieve 52mpg consistently. That must have been amazing fuel consumption back in 2005.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are very few cars in the C1 class now, as they simply do not make manufacturers much money and everyone is being pushed to electrify everything, which ensures that the price of most cars continues to increase, and they are more conscious of their profit margins than ever.

  • @CortinasAndClassics
    @CortinasAndClassics 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How can they call that an SUV? It looks nothing of the sort.
    I like the key, gearstick and handbrake.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh yes, one of the few new cars with a normal handbrake, conventional key and a standard five speed manual gearbox. That is genuinely one of the reasons I wanted to test it, and these engines are exceptionally reliable. The looks...maybe not so sure, but there have been others with pseudo off-roader looks in the class before, like the Vauxhall Adam Rocks.

    Sorry to be a nerd.......but does anyone know why Toyota think it important that drivers know the engine rpm but not the coolant temperature? This seems to be a carry over from the old Aygo and the petrol Yaris (Yaris hi-brid does now have a coolant gauge ).

    I do like quirky cars but im not 100% convinced on the instrument cluster, gloss black colour on so much of the rear panels and the canvas roof? Do however really like the old school key, proper handbrake, pop out rear windows and exposed/painted metal interior parts…and….hallelujah, the main infotainment screen has been integrated into the dash design rather than just plonking it on as an afterthought as so many manufacturers do nowadays…that rear door opening and the integrated headrests are a bit questionable tho…!!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The normal key, conventional handbrake, standard five speed manual and general lightness in the build (although not poor quality) was one of the reasons why I wanted to try the car. Yes, the steering wheel and infotainment system are quite nice for a car like this one. The rear door opening is a bit too small, in my opinion.

  • @revivedfears
    @revivedfears ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I actually own a pre facelift aygo MK 2 and was looking at these the other day. I genuinely prefer the older generation. The entire appeal of these small cars is that they just that, small. It's also disappointing to see the lack of colour options. The older generations had loads of different variations and trims.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it is a very different car from the older model, although it does have roughly the same engine. Lots of manufacturers seem to have reduced colour options these days, just seems to be the way it is, I am afraid.

  • @alanhargreaves8974
    @alanhargreaves8974 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Are you sure about the automatic having 'floppy paddles' giving 7 gear ratios to select? The whole point of CVT is in the name......Constantly Variable Transmission, giving infinitey variable gear ratios.Surely, slectable ratios would defeat the whole object of this?

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They pre-programme the "shift points" into the gearbox software to make it appear as if it has ratios, as the behaviour a CVT transmission can seem strange to someone who has never driven one before. If you are familiar with CVTs, which it appears that you are, the chances are you would have come across this sort of thing before.

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting My only previous CVT car was a DAF 66 in 1972 which was purely belt drive with F, R and N available and, if I recall a 'hill descent' button. I have ordered an Aygo X automatic and will see how it goes in due course.
