Soubhana Allah, Allah guided my son to Islam, he announced just before Ramadan that he wanted to fast and learn to pray salat, it is the greatest joy in my life to help him understand Islam, to be a Muslim mom. He is 24 and he doesn't want to tell the rest of the family because he is afraid they will disown him. Allah's test for the two of us. My worry is how he explains his diet and how he is going to pray on time when he is with them

First in not feeling ashamed of how difficult it is after reverting, how it's not the happy ever after shahada story and what a true and lonely struggle it can be. Second, as I come from a Jewish background and faith I'm honestly feeling an identity crisis with this exact "you and them" attitude you are describing. It's coming BTW both from Jews and Muslims. It's reassuring to remember again it's not about the right and the wrong group which is something I dislike so much. It's about searching for the truth and walking in it's path. JazakAllah, thanks for sharing this. My Shahada was a very quiet and small occasion but I do understand the feeling of being alone. Telling family and friends was easy in practice but the anticipation of what they might think was difficult. Maintaining connection with Islam is the fight every Muslim experiences. The words of the Shahada (which we say five times a day) keeps that connection for me. I reverted over a year ago and Alhamdulillah, it has been the most amazing, transformative event of my life. I come from a Christian background and Allah SWT has blessed me with so much certainty now.

I was following Bobby’s long walk to the shahada and my respect continued to grew along with my suspense until he announced his shahada. The suspense went away but the respect never ceased to grow.

@Egg yea it truly is a blessing that I'd taken for granted. I used to live in the UAE and India where I could hear the adhan 5 times daily. Now I don't and I really miss it.
