I agree, Jason, that Singapore is a great traveler’s stopover experience. I’ve spent a couple of days there 4 different times. Love what there is to see and do in various areas of the city, its natural beauty (trees and vegetation), and cleanliness. Adding some meals at the Hawker’s Market to my list next time. Changi airport continues to be my favorite airport in the world.
Indeed. Travel magazines rate Changi again and again as the world's best airport. It's seen lots of expansion since it opened in the early 1980s and will expand further. Meanwhile at Heathrow it took 20 years (after endless planning enquiries, construction etc) just to build T5. Heathrow's third runway was mooted in the late 1940s and still is not built (and probably never will be) !
Welcome back to Singapore 🇸🇬 Thank you for your kind appreciation for our little city-state. I love that you showed 4:00 an iconic old photo of Boat Quay (how it was till late 70s before we clean it up. Took 10 yrs, at least). Enjoy your stay!

I'll tell you how good you are....I was always aware of Singapore, but it never crossed my mind that i would like to visit, now after watching your video i find that i would love to go there.
@17:21 you spoke on the defence of Singapore and how the British did not think the Japanese would attack. Actually in the run up to the war, the British were very aware that the Japanese might attack, and the plan prior to the beginnings of the war was to enact a "Singapore Strategy" where Britain would build a huge naval base at Singapore to protect Australia from the Japanese. However, over time, Britain's focus and commitment slowly eroded and the huge naval base and armada that was planned, eventually were reduced to two capital ships (Prince of Wales and Repulse) that was quickly sunk by the Japanese, as a prelude to the conquest of Malaya and Singapore. But you are correct that by 1942, Britain was in a fight for their very own survival and could not spare the men or machines to defend their far-flung colonies in the Far East. Thus, Singapore fell - despite Churchill's orders to Percival the officer in Charge of Singapore's defence, not to surrender. The Australians felt very betrayed by Britain's callousness and the Wavell Report tried to blame the Australians for the defeat in Singapore. Or something like that.
Further relevant points: 1. The defeat was largely due to incompetence. The allied forces in Malaya and Singapore outnumbered the Japs by several times. The allied force are also much better equipped. The allied forces are badly organised, lead, and commanded. The logistics were chaotic. There was also no will to fight. The allied forces quickly retreated upon contact. In fact, if the British hold back the surrender by one day, the Japanese would have ran out of ammunition, food and water. 2. British organised the main defence fortifications in the south of Singapore. Japanese attacked from the North. 3. The British Air force was pulled back to UK prior to Japanese invasion.

Hi Jason! Love all your videos! (This one included). I learned from your video that I really do want to visit the Marina, Chinatown, and Central Singapore City but definitely do not care to visit Sentosa Island. Reason? I live in Orlando, Florida, and your video segment resembled 'International Drive' here in Orlando, which is the last kind of place I would care to visit on the other side of the world. The other places in Singapore appeal to me a great deal though. Also, the 'Singapore Sling' you had at the Long Bar is at the Raffles Hotel. I was a little curious as to why you did not mention the name. I think I can guess, but will just leave it at that. Best!
I was just in Singapore 10 days ago for the first time. I stayed in Little India, and May 1st was workers holiday. On Serangoon street I saw dozens of jewelry stores with the most amazing amount of gold and an incredible amount of customers and clerks negotiating the prices of jewelry, blew me away. The MRT is easy to use for tourists Just tap your credit card to go in and come out. No need for tickets or passes. I think the best time to visit Sentosa would be during Halloween, there is an annual Universal Studios Haunted House event which is very popular. Each year the theme is different. On the main island there are also nightly ghost tours. If you do drink, note that alcohol is very expensive in Singapore so what cash strapped locals do is to have a few drinks from 7-11 convenience stores or the Kopitiams (local coffeeshop) before getting to the party joint. If you do pub crawls in Singapore be prepared to fork out a lot of $. If you want to buy toiletries , fruits, small eats go to NTUC/Sheng Siong supermarkets. These are the cheaper options.
Sentosa is too touristy, you should visit pulau ubin instead. Take the bum boat from changi village and you feel like you are transported back in time. If you like history abt POW, its a must to visit Changi Chapel and museum that is located not far from changi airport. Anyway just Google changi village, its more laid back from the hustle and bustle of the city. Plenty of food and nice ambience.

17:10 Indian National Army was formed in 1942 under Rash Behari Bose by Indian POWs of the British Indian Army captured by Japan in the Malayan campaign and at Singapore. Rash Behari handed over INA to great Subhas Chandra Bose. he set up provisional government for free India in Singapore. then started the war of indian independence from the British. it was one of the most Epic battle with very little help from the Japanese. after Japan surrender at the end of world war 2 the battle of INA also ended and the soldiers were captured by British army. Brits decided to conduct a public trial on 3 commanders of Ina-Dhillon, Sahgal, Khan. as the news of Netaji with his Army fought against the British spread the entire British Indian Navy revolted in 1946. because of this already weakened British army because of WW2 could not hold onto India and they left in 1947. in 1956 when British pm Clement Attlee came to India then Bengal Governor asked him why British leave India. to which Attlee replied that the role played by Netaji army was paramount for India's Independence.
I'm not sure it really mattered. Part of the deal for American help in WWII was to release all the colonies that UK controlled overseas so even if that did not happen, Britain would have had to release India anyway. Examples of this include Palestine, South Africa and Malaysia, there were no epic battles there yet in the end they all got released from British rule anyway because it was part of the deal with the US.
Actually there were not much action at Fort Siloso during WW2… The British pointed all the big guns at Fort Siloso (and Changi) to the south. They thought the Japanese will invade Singapore from the sea. But the Japanese came through the thick jungle of Malaysia and invaded Singapore from the north.
Singapore is not perfect and not the most affordable, but you can pretty much live daily with significantly less care and thought about things other parts of the world worry about.

I had bad and scary experience at Changi airport terminal4 last Saturday 13 May 2023. Immigration held me up over two hours before issuing visa. I was travelling on British passport, it should not taken more then ten minutes. I am very unhappy about this which spoiled my Singapore visit. This behaviour a sure way to loose tourists!
Since you have a British passport, there must be other records in your history that held up your visa issue. Probably not something you should be advertising loudly.
@@cancanjaker1620 No other records other than British Asian origin. A white girl in front of me just went through in 5 minutes. There is no ground for this type of behaviour other than racial harrasment. No reason or apology given. I have visited more than fifteen countries, never had a such horrible experience.
@@faqirm6317 not very likely it is racial harassment. Are you sure you are not being overly sensitive to highlight skin color over everything? Maybe there is some political sensitivity during your time of visit?
Singapore is great becacuse its one firm law for all to obey. None of this diviristy, relgious, multiculturalism that is plaguing yhe West. To become a citizen you have to be Singaporean first and then your personal cultural, relgious identity second and for this reason it works. Singapore also teach you at schools discipline and resoect - which i feel is very much absent in the UK which i am currently short term working at.
@@alexmcwhirter6611 One review on Singapore that I once watched was from a Black American, she made a very interesting point that in the US, she was "African American" and others were "Asian American" and "Hispanic American", basically race first then country, while in Singapore they are "Singaporean Chinese" "Singaporean Indian" and "Singaporean Malay", country first then race. In fact, in Singapore, when her colleagues introduce her as an "American" without the race, she had a kneejerk rejection before she realized that, yes she WAS American.
The fact that the citizens labelled themselves as Korean American or African American is clearly marking a distinction and making the racial difference obvious.
..... don't do that racial shit in Singapore, they are very, very, very strict about it. Comes from their history, they know that turning one race against another only ends up dividing your country in two.
@@danielc2701 Look at America back in 2020, with all the riots and BLM. Singapore is safe because they don't have them over there. If they are there the country would be ruined fast.
Visit both Hong Kong and S'pore and you would realise they are quite different places. Singapore has changed so much over the years. I first visited in the 1970s (before Changi opened) and it was such a sleepy place ! Obviously S'pore has changed since but it's still different.
You can rent a car. Not the cheapest option for travel as the public transport is much cheaper and very good. To rent a car though, you’ll need a valid driver’s licence. If you want to play it safe, get an international driver’s permit.
If you say Singapore then it is all that. Singapore consist only 'one state' (the country as well as the city). But if you say Indonesia when you're at Jakarta, it is not just that because Indonesia consist of 17,000 islands. Ha ha! Same as in Malaysia or Thailand or The Philipines, they are big compare to the tiny Singapore.
Thanks for producing this video, Jason. I first visited S'pore in 1973 and although I made repeat visits many times in the following years it's now 30 years since I was last there. So many changes ! Good that you stayed outside the downtown area. Decades ago that was the only place with western-standard hotels so, again, big changes. As for Changi ... the Singaporeans emulated Amsterdam Schiphol for its terminal design (although Changi has been expanded since and will see further expansion in the years ahead) and home airline SIA has a business plan based around carrying transfer passengers (just like KLM). Perhaps my only complaints are the draconian laws and the fact that Singapore's govt only tolerates overseas visitors to stay for a limited time ... after which it wants them to leave !
Hi Alex Singaporean here. 30 years is a long time and Singapore is a totally changed place. Laws are draconian to those who break it - especially drug traffickers. Other than that, it is pretty chill. And Singapore welcomes visitors and wish they stay long and spend money here. I was born here is 1962 and from my house, I could see nothing except a small building. Today, it is a highly developed country. Please visit Singapore and try the hawker food (Maxwell hawker and Chinatown hawker are good starting points) - you will not be disappointed.
Draconian laws are what make Singapore one of the safest & corrupt free city. Just look at other country around the world where crimes including drugs etc; are so rampant.
Your perception about Singapore is completely outdated and irrelevant, except the existence of the so-called draconian law. Even that, many in the world have now come to praise the tough laws as good models to follow. Restricting visitor's length of stay has never ever been part of Singapore policy. This run counter to Singapore's strategy since founding.
People who say that usually fail to go beyond Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, and Chinatown. There is really soooo much else to do after you're done with those!
Hi Yasmin. Singaporean here. I have lived my hold life in Singapore - 61 years. Yes it is clean and designed. But it has a soul and people are generally very kind. Travel out of the city and go into the heartlands where we lived and you will see a completely different side of Singapore. Hope you visit and see it for yourself.
There are well designed, badly designed, and chaotic dysfunctional cities. Soul, character and room for natural evolution were incorporated in the Singapore city design that look ahead for 50 years. Please visit Singapore if you are interested to know its soul, not from a short video.

yes. malay is for military. military commands all malay. Who uses malay in business transactions. Use malay for what? We give face only k? since 75% of us are chinese and are a majority race in sg. why need to speak malay? We not minority like you in malaysia. @@vincentxiao601

Nice. Where are you headed to next?
Ok. You answered it in the video lol
I have not seen a cleaner country. Well done Singapore
Awesome
you should check out macritchie nature park next time u r here, it is pretty there!
Actually there were not much action at Fort Siloso during WW2…
The British pointed all the big guns at Fort Siloso (and Changi) to the south. They thought the Japanese will invade Singapore from the sea.
But the Japanese came through the thick jungle of Malaysia and invaded Singapore from the north.
Singapore is not perfect and not the most affordable, but you can pretty much live daily with significantly less care and thought about things other parts of the world worry about.
jealous malaysian detected.
Singapore is such a unique and underrrated place! Greetings from Thailand, Flori
It was never 'under ratet'
What about Clarke Quay???
Jason Billam, this is your second time in Singapore?
Yes he said that in the video
تحية من العراق لك اخي الكريم
Check out the Atlas Bar!
Hope you will visit Sri Lanka someday😊
Very nice travelogue video.
Precise and good guide for other travellers.
One can travel to nearby ASEAN countries by air for difference perspective & experiences of South East Asia. Average travelling time 2 hrs.
Redhill food centre has a really good fishball noodles Lin Mao (look for the Chinese words on the sign say lin mao fish balls noodles) 😊
Not plain taste . By 12pm or 2pm sold out
Are you and Gabriel Traveler using the same person to do your thumbnails? Since your meet up in Hampi you both have similar thumbnail layouts, which look great btw
Gabriel just made U.S. the poorest p.r. ever.
Tourist visits some touristy places in Singapore and was able to judge that Singapore is one of the "Best" places. 🤔
حیاكم في سنغفورۃ 😌
Singapore is a place for you to recharge and refuel before you embark on your next journey.
I love the variety of food! I can't wait for Taiwan serie
สวัสดีคุณเจสัน 🙏
i love this country . what is soul? lol
Maybe they are trying to determine if you are a CCP spy
you probably have a bad record in the system lmao
Singapore is great becacuse its one firm law for all to obey. None of this diviristy, relgious, multiculturalism that is plaguing yhe West. To become a citizen you have to be Singaporean first and then your personal cultural, relgious identity second and for this reason it works. Singapore also teach you at schools discipline and resoect - which i feel is very much absent in the UK which i am currently short term working at.
Not forgetting military service (compulsory I think).
It's nice because it's safe, very few crimes because no dark meats.
..... don't do that racial shit in Singapore, they are very, very, very strict about it. Comes from their history, they know that turning one race against another only ends up dividing your country in two.
@@danielc2701 Look at America back in 2020, with all the riots and BLM. Singapore is safe because they don't have them over there. If they are there the country would be ruined fast.
Shame on you.
You should apologise.
You are not welcomed.
Singaporean here.
I think it's like Hong Kong which I have been.... Are there opportunities to rent a Car? Or do you need a Local Driving Licence?
Visit both Hong Kong and S'pore and you would realise they are quite different places. Singapore has changed so much over the years. I first visited in the 1970s (before Changi opened) and it was such a sleepy place ! Obviously S'pore has changed since but it's still different.
You can rent a car. Not the cheapest option for travel as the public transport is much cheaper and very good. To rent a car though, you’ll need a valid driver’s licence. If you want to play it safe, get an international driver’s permit.
Thanks...

Its Costly ,rains a lot .Good for one time holiday.MRT and buses ,the cleanliness are great.Changi looks great . waiting for Taiwan series
As with Dubai, Singapore is a perfect gateway to the local region.
Looks like Magnus carlsen
If you say Singapore then it is all that. Singapore consist only 'one state' (the country as well as the city). But if you say Indonesia when you're at Jakarta, it is not just that because Indonesia consist of 17,000 islands. Ha ha! Same as in Malaysia or Thailand or The Philipines, they are big compare to the tiny Singapore.
a British foreigner visits Singapore
@@ragsoh Thanks for the lengthy reply. Yes I would hope to pay another visit before I get too old !
@@NoohCee Thanks for the reply. Yes things can and do change over time. I must revisit !
Was in singapore, it was ok. Nice city, very clean but after couple days getting boring. Not so much to see and to do
How many days did you visit ?? I visited for 12 days and had an absolute blast. Still had many treks which I couldn't do.
Yes it is a 'nice' city but I gained the impression S'pore wants overseas visitors to stay a limited time only.
@@alexmcwhirter6611of course a visitor is for limited time. Unlimited time is for permanent resident.
That is true when one can barely afford.
People who say that usually fail to go beyond Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, and Chinatown. There is really soooo much else to do after you're done with those!

Singapore is nice and very clean, but i prefer Malaysia much more considering it size, more diversity and affordability.
I am happy you enjoyed, but it seems like too clean and designed place for me.
Someone left the emotion behind and gave the logic complete state.
@@ragsoh Thank you 🙂
There are well designed, badly designed, and chaotic dysfunctional cities. Soul, character and room for natural evolution were incorporated in the Singapore city design that look ahead for 50 years.
Please visit Singapore if you are interested to know its soul, not from a short video.
Lee Kuan Yew said that Singapore owes its prosperity to the common law rule of law inherited from the British colonists.
