    Two things I've noticed as a myopic person. The intensity of bright colors does not diminish although details such as lines, shapes, and patterns either merge or cannot be seen. More important, the blurring shown in this otherwise fantastic video does not take perspective into account. By this, I mean that distant objects are blurrier whereas nearer objects are not as blurred.

    The loss of sharpness in face features is the most important social effect. You won’t recognize familiar faces anymore, even with mild myopia.

    • @luka188
      @luka188 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, this happens even with -2, walking on the street uncorrected, you won't be able to see anyones facial features until they are within 5 meters pretty much. My vision has gradually worsened the past few years, from -1.something, to -3~ish (Haven't had it tested in a while), and slowly faces just disappear. People on the street are just blobs of color, faces are a blur. Uncorrected I recognize people by other tells, and sometimes I can only recognize them when they are within 10 meters.
      Even with this video, I can't imagine what it is like to have -10 in reality. I expect the whole world to just be a haze, almost like a kaleidoscope of light and color, but no definable features.

      @luka188 I’m -9.5 in one eye and -10.5 in the other, and that’s exactly what it’s like. Just random soft color areas blurring into each other everywhere. It’s not necessarily unpleasant. It can be kind of relaxing, actually. Like I kind of feel less self conscious and more at ease, as if no one else can see me either, haha. But it’s crazy to think of how disabling it would have been for most of human history, before we had glasses.

    This was great, especially the indoor outdoor differences and the book distances. I remember taking a picture of a building once and being astonished that the text on its roof was legible on the photo but not to me. That's when I knew I needed glasses.
    Would be nice to see this with human faces as the subject. I'm sure you've heard the "you look prettier without my glasses on too" joke/comeback, but what is it actually like? Do human faces become unrecognizable, at what distance?

    Great video! When i got my eyeglasses back when i was a teenager, it read -4.75. As i wore them all throughout my life, my latest grade is now at -3.50 and -3.75 in each eye. These new glasses were made less than a year ago.
    I'm turning 40 this year, and i noticed that whenever i read words closer to my eyes, they tend to blur now compared before, so i have to adjust and move farther whatever I'm reading. I think it's because I'm entering the stage where my eyes are starting to get older (they say it starts at 40) so I'm reminded everyday that not only do i have myopia, but would also have to contend now with early onset of presbyopia. 😢

    Holding a book mere centimeters away in order to read it is certainly a familiar feeling (-10). I actually find it quite advantageous when working with very small objects to be able to take off my glasses and focus in right up close without the need for a magnifying glass. I imagine this would not be possible for people with a more distant depth of field.
    An interesting note about having such a close and narrow depth of field (and binocular vision): With uncorrected vision, I can no longer focus on an object with both eyes at once, because once something is within my far point, the separate images from each eye are too different to be reconciled. Whenever looking at my phone in bed, I always have one eye closed, otherwise it's impossible to see. Sort of like trying to focus on anything while cross-eyed. This is something that the single-lensed camera cannot replicate.
    The shot of the church shows very well how the world turns into blobs of colors for myopes. We can still see shapes, especially when there is strong contrast, but details are all but absent. Love the Jinx mural!

I've started wearing my glasses for longer periods of the day rather than my contact lenses to try to give my eyes more of a break. As an experiment, when I take a walk I take off my glasses and walk for a while to see the world uncorrected. I've noticed when the sun is very bright, there are moments I can almost see the texture of the pavement. On a cloudy day not so much. Another observation is more of a question. There is a reason why. When your eyes are exposed to bight light (sunlight), your pupils contract and become smaller. Less unfocussed light enters your eye and blurry vision is less noticeable. In low light your pupils dilate to let in more light. More unfocussed light enters your eye and the blurry vision is worse.

    Interesting video. I have had myopia since birth, prescription currently -13. My far point of focus is 8.8 cms and near point 6.9 cms, so a very narrow depth of field. With spectacles my vision is 20/20 on the right and 20/15 on the left, near point 20 cms, far point right to the horizon.
    Incidentally, with extreme myopia, the image doesn't only get more blurred it also breaks up and fragments. The best example is looking down a street at night without specs and seeing how the small street light bulbs in the distance become huge circles of dots, almost like a large dandelion head which has gone to seed! The camera does not mimic this.

    Great topic and video Antonio. Your presentation is admirable - but the camera lens blur simulation does not quite describe the effect - especially in lower light/indoor settings. I would say that blur is not as bad as you show here in interior lighting scenes (maybe due to how rods and cones work in different lighting conditions?). Also I would say most folks who have myopia also have slight astigmatism as well, which does not offer the same even “blue filter” when blurring a spherical lens evenly using something like Gaussian blur. I find that while an image at -4 is blurry, the average myope (without bad astigmatism) can still resolve certain elements of these scenes with perceivably less blur, while having the macro scene still blurry, if that makes any sense.

    Former high myope -10 with -3 astigmatism. I had a lens replacement in both eyes for cataracts four years ago. I’d been wearing custom gp contacts, monovision, but was becoming increasingly intolerant of them and wearing glasses wasn’t ideal for driving due to edge distortion. I had night blindness. The lens replacement changed my life! I opted for monovision so I wear readers for close view in low light, but otherwise I need no glasses for distance, day or night. I almost cried when seeing your examples of what my vision was before. People really have no idea how debilitating high myopia is. I am so grateful that the lens replacement healed me. It was a miracle.

    • @nancyeaton731
      @nancyeaton731 ปีที่แล้ว

      To add a bit more about the night blindness, I am not sure if this was due to the monovision with the gp contacts, or residual astigmatism that was uncorrectable, but I had no depth of field ability when judging oncoming headlights. There were also halos. This made night driving extremely dangerous, not only for me personally, but for all other people on the road driving with people who have this affliction and still try to drive at night anyway.

    My right eye had a problem with the retina separating from the back of the eye. I went in emergency surgery and they were able to reattach it to the back of my eyeball. The surgery was a success as far as restoring my vision but I developed a caterac (as 90% of patients with this surgery do) and had to have a lens replaced. I can still see with this eye but my focus at the center of my eye is fuzzy. I can see a person in front of me and make out most of the details but not much of the fine details. Now my left eye is what my right eye was before the need for surgery. I can make out every line printed on a $100 dollar bill as long as it is within 6 inches. I just can't read the dashboard of a car without my glasses. My vision I think is -8.50. BUT the iris of my right eye is always comparatively dialated. This is why it appears that on bright sunny days I seem to be winking at people. In reality, I close my right eye because the brightness is painful and most everything I see is washed out.

    I have myopia around -2 or slightly worse, probably from using the computer when I was young. I've managed to not break my glasses for over 10 years, wearing them sparingly only when needed. I've not been to an eye specialist, do I can't say my exact number.
    But I don't "suffer" from my near sightedness. I don't have a house anymore and don't need to work in the garden. I don't attend school and therefore don't get laughed at for my glasses. It would be far more troublesome if I couldn't see up close. Even work outdoors needs precision.
    An optometrist prescribed me a compromise glasses around -1.75. When I first put my glasses on, I loudly exclaimed like a fool in the optometrists office. I wear glasses when walking outside in the city and going shopping to search products on shelves, and avoid attracting security. I don't need perfect sharpness read text or distinguish a red light. The title of the book would be readable at some distance to the camera.
    There is still a range of focusing ability unlike your camera. I don't get how you derive meters from the diopters, which are a correction on top of the range that the eye has.

I also have medium astigmatism on my right eye. No way my vision without lenses or glasses is as bad as shown in the video, both outdoor and indoor. At daytime I can - with some effort - read license plates of cars parked across the street from my window (20m away) with no correction. And with -3.00 and -3.50 lenses my vision does not seem to be hypercorrected, actually it feels like I am still missing 0.25/0.50 per eye. Am I mixing measures up or how can this make sense?
