Thank you guys, you're the first Americans to say just turn both taps on and mix the damn water. You've just made a Brit surprisingly happy. 😀

The presenter herself cocked it right up with the chip butty - by saying that is was filled with French Fries! French fries aren't even chips . . . jeeez! . . . But chip butties aren't all there is: Bacon butties, Sausage butties, Crisp butties, Cheese, Salad, etc . . . You just put anything between two slices of bread and it becomes a ??? butty.
As for the issue with trying to figure out the hot and cold taps . . . we have this thing below the taps called a sink (basin) - you just fill it with each tap to your required temp - if you can even be bothered that much. (And we can also drink from any of our separated cold water taps, too!) . . .
In regards to Geordie Shore - Yes it is true that some of our accents can be tricky to understand sometimes - even for some of us here in the UK. 2 other Geordie shows had the same problem were: Auf Wiedersehn Pet, about builders working abroad in Germany (Comedy/Drama) - this even needed subtitles for other parts of the UK to watch it sometimes. Whereas Spender, with one of the same actors from the earlier show, Oz, Jimmy Nail who was now playing Spender, which was a Crime/Drama series, was sold to America. It had to be stopped until some subtitles were made for it . . Then again, we got the series Cops from you to watch, you know with the, Bad Boys - Bad Boys, theme tune. Well most of the time we were just as lost over here with that one as well . . .

Thank you for the tap comment ... at last .... just put the plug in the sink and mix the water. The other point of course is that we do have mixer taps too, so I rather think a lot of these videos include the two taps bit because they're copying the ones that went before.

Regions and their accents: Geordies are people from the North East of England. They have a distinctive accent, some word usage is different and there are some cultural differences. The whole of the U.K. is divided into accents and cultures. Scouses for example from the Liverpool area are totally unique. I’m a Yorkshireman, here we have not just an accent but a dialect.

    • @pollyparrot8759
      @pollyparrot8759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's even more localised than that. Geordies are from Newcastle, not just the North East and if you tell someone from outside Newcastle they're a Geordie you will get some very hard looks.

With the mixer taps, newer houses tend to have mixer taps and more people are changing them like we have. Its because in the olden days hot water would be stored in a container in the attic and wasn't classed as safe to drink so it had a separate tap to the drinkable cold water. Its easy enough to mix the water to the right temp in the sink and you can wash in that.

The mixing of imperial and metric units: First the imperial weights are in fact units for weight or the force of gravity pulling it down. The metric grams and kilograms are units of Mass. So if you sent an imperial pound to the moon it would become less than a pound, but send a Kilogram and it remains a Kilogram although lighter in weight. OK in normal life but if you work in Science and Engineering it’s important to know the difference. Then there is convenience - I’m 6’ 4” tall. Everyone understands that but put that in metric and people would struggle to understand if I was lanky or dwarf! I drink pints not units. again people understand the traditional measure.

Marmite is made from yeast extract and yes, it's the same type of thing as vegemite. You either love it or hate it, there's no halfway house. If you ever try it DO NOT put a spoonful into your mouth to see what it takes like, it will burn like crazy and taste disgusting. Try spreading it really thinly on buttered bread and , if you don't hate it, you'll love it .
Chip butties ..... seriously, don't knock it till you've tried it. Proper thick homemade chips (french fries to you) between two slices of thickly buttered bread. The butter melts into the chips and they are divine.😋

The taps don't just have separate controls for hot and cold, they have separate nozzles too. You have to put the plug in the sink and mix the water in there. It was to stop hot and cold water mixing in the single nozzle. Our hot water used to be heated in large tanks, it wasn't fresh to drink. You only really find it in older properties now.

Marmite is the original. Vegemite etc are later developments. People are never indifferent about how Marmite tastes, because it's very, very salty, umami and yeasty, so you either love it or loathe it.

The reason we have two taps is because the hot water tanks used to be stored in the attics of our houses but sometimes it would go stagnant and until it was cleaned it would be dangerous to drink so we always knew the cold water tap attached to the mains was safe to drink.

Fun fact rhe us southern accent is mostly a devolved version of the lancashire Cumbria, Northumberland and Yorkshire accent as we mostly settled the south because we northerners couldnt afford to live in the rich northern States. For example florida, a swampy humid place. Wasostly settled by lancastrians, the fylde coast which makes up about 1/4 of lancashire is extremely humid (but cold) and full of marshes swamps and bogs

I use to drink Harvey’s Bristol Cream when I was little. A chip butty is chips either with bread, a bun or even a stottie (it comes from the North East of England), fries are not used chips are bigger and fatter than fries.

Your pound joke was quite good. The pound in the currency "pounds Sterling" (£) refered to the weight in silver that £1 is worth. Bizarrely, the £ was decimalsed in 1971 so that there are now 100 new pence in £1, as opposed to 240d (or 20 shillings) pre decimalisation. So we have an imperial currency (£.s.d.) turned "metric".

Great Britain is the largest of all the British isles and is divided into 3 different countries, England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom is
Great Britain plus Northern Ireland. Ireland was divided back in 1921 between the mostly Protestant north and the mostly Catholic south,
now known as the Republic of Ireland (Eire in Gaelic). I do hope that makes things clearer.........................................the ancient Englishman.
P.s. Remember, when in the UK it's "chips are hot and crisps are not!"

The reason for separate taps was that hot water came from a boiler and or water tank that could have dead rodents and bugs in it may have rusted or had lead or other unpleasant metals in it, so we split the taps one was potable cold water from the mains the other hot water from tbe boiler/tank, but as news systems are put in its safe wirb the hot water as its heated up and sent straight out now

    PLEASE READ:
In this video, you spoke about accents and I can say that there is around 60 different dialects/languages in the UK, and just of the top of my head, I can think of about 8 different native languages spoken.
What are these dialects/accents? What are these languages? Well, below are two videos (one on each topic)
I see that you have uploaded two videos in the last 16 hours after a month, so I look forward to seeing the reaction from now-a months time 😅
    Accents: th-cam.com/video/2pZ-Ny8q22o/w-d-xo.html
DO NOTE: I’ll admit, this isn’t the best video to watch the quality seems to have been recorded by using a default mic on a laptop haha BUT with that said, it is the only video that has native speakers of the region (and not a single person trying to give it their best shot)
    Language: th-cam.com/video/ODeYttUY4VI/w-d-xo.html

UK chips are not French fries.
Marmite is a savoury concentrate (very strong), use sparingly, you have been warned
The English language is made up of Celtic, French, German, Indian, Scandinavian, Latin, illiteracy and other languages over hundreds of years, hence the disconnect between spelling and pronunciation
In the UK the accent and word use changes, at least a little, every few miles.
Butty = butter = bread and butter

I was born in '76 in Sth Wales. We were taught purely in metric, I have no idea on imperial and cannot figure it out. I think generally most schools all teach in metric. Back in my time, I'm not 100% sure about other schools, but imperial never entered my education when I grew up. I find metric just more precise but that's just that I'm used to it and don't know the other. Were I currently live, I can drive 10 miles and the accent is totally different, another 10 and it's different again.

I dont understand the problem with having two taps, one for hot and one for cold, as the sink will have a plug to stop the water going down the drain. so just put both taps on and mix the water to the warmth you want then wash your hands. Then pull out the plug to let the water drain away. Thank you for the down load.

Marmite is the original veggie mite is a Austrailian spin off. And it would probably be better if you learned about our United kingdom from a English ,Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish person not an American, and the way take say things in England is the Correct way as it's our language. Also most Americans think us English are called British, no we are English.
