It looks fantastic but I’ll be honest, I think it could be improved by being more detonation than deflagration. That’s one of my biggest pet peeves with visual effects. The building probably wasn’t filled with kerosene so why does it look like an exploding airplane. Reference of JDAM strikes express more on the detonation side.
@@BadPractices Jeah, i think so too. The fuel would burn somewhat quicker. But I took some creative liberties here. This is not suppose to be photo real.
I really like the lighting you did on the scene. Would you be able to give a brief explanation of how you set it up? It looks like a very realistic sun setting and I want to try and emulate it
@@Besaid_ Thanks! This was a bit of a lucky shot. First I actually tried different hdri maps but wasnt happy with the result. So I started with just a simple dome light with a very light tint. Then I played around with a distant light and very soon ended up with this. In the future I will actually always use this method first, because it gives you total control and more options. For a long time I was trying hdri maps until I found something that was ok but thats not intuitiv. Also I work in Aces color space and used the Depth map to add fog, to underline the camera being very high up in the air. Good reference is key. Placing the sun opposite from the camera creates always a nice rim light wich adds some interesting structure and noise to the buildings. Hope this helps
@@karimoh3154 This is really impressive work - I was wondering the same thing as Besaid, questioning how on earth is the lighting so crisp and nice, great work. Out of curiousity, as I'm tackling a similar problem that you may have had when working on this. The Kitbashed models, how did you prep them to be rbd ready??, In this soviet kit, the hero building (after I iterated over each of the objects based on their material path in my Houdini scene), it looks to me that none of the object almost have any volume, is intersecting with one another or is just not good to be cut up or fractured in any viable method in Houdini. Could you maybe elaborate how you approached that (if you even fixed it), I know it's mostly blocked by the smoke, but still. Cheers
@@MusicBaked Hey there, Sry for the late reply! I've just noticed this comment now... So the fracturing was indeed a hassle. If I remember correctly, I split into a few layers: Concrete, brick, Metal, plastic and glass. Then I isolated the walls and other one sided geo and used a polyextrude sop in them. It wasnt as easy as that though... The stairs gave me the most trouble and I ended up remodeling some of them. I am not sure how I selected the walls. Maybe through an inverted "deleted small pieces" sop or a group sop with open edge selection and further extending. I also added floors and inner walls, so there was more interior structure. So there was a fair amount of manual work involved in that, which was no fun. Now i also remember I used a fuse sop and had to remodel a few other walls. After creating those meshes I merged them back and material fractured them. Hope this helps!
it's cool, but why would the missiles strike from 3 different directions. The tactical advantage you would gain from that wouldn't be worth the effort. Otherwise it looks awesome! I thought it was real at first. :)
@@Artindi Because its visually more interesting but also I saw this in a few reference videos. I guess they do it to bring down the buildings in a "controlled" fashion. I think normally there is more time between each strike though.
Seriously, this came out so good. And I got to see first hand the amount of hard work and dedication. Paid off!
I love it all -- but little additions like that flock of birds make it really feel natural.
Great to hear. Actually these are no birds but paper flyers that get thrown out of airplanes before they bomb the area to warn the civilians.
@@karimoh3154 Even more ominously beautiful!

Great work man, all the best
Really cool. Maybe the car siren should start at the first strike already?
This is not good, this is just insane. Love it
bro you're a monster of Houdini

@@karimoh3154If not meant to be photo real then I retract my comment. I definitely understand the appeal of the fuel style of explosion.
