My wife was classically trained on piano. Never deep into rock, but a few years ago I put together a compilation of music for our anniversary (it's a big number). I had "Bird on a Wire" from Mad Dogs & Englishmen" on it, and she asked, "Who is that on piano? It's beautiful!"

I’ve been binge watching every video Leon ever performed on video and listening to his deep tracks. His piano playing was inspirational powerful and brilliantly executed. Thanks Elton for giving the man a hand before he passed. Thankful he was able to receive R&R hall of fame before he left this world. There will never be another Leon, he was a one off!

Elton...Leon Russell is my idol too...and I can't sing or play a note. Everything about him moves me. His appearance- "Master of Space & Time" indeed. That voice! An arresting growl..like no other. One of the most soulful voices in all of music...with that twang in there. His piano playing? Pure holy roller. Like something straight out of a revival meeting. @@mark1952able I grew up in the 80s and am a fan of R&B music so missed the 70s when Leon Russell was in his prime. His songs are classic and timeless - three of my favourite versions of his songs are "Superstar" by Luther Vandross; "This Masquerade" by George Benson and "A Song for You" by Donny Hathaway /Ray Charles. The fact that so many singers have covered his songs is testimony to his talent as a songwriter.

I remember the first time I saw Leon Russell, which was in the documentary about Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. Cocker was excellent, but the person on stage that you couldn't take your eyes off was LR.
He didn't move much or say much or even change his facial expressions much, but it was obvious that he was completely in charge of everything happening around him. He was the ringmaster and the musical center.
That might have been the first time I understood what charisma is.

I saw it live, in Detroit, there very first show. Just like the film, we could not take our eyes off this man in the top hat. playing both piano and guitar and leading the band. Joe Cocker was a great singer but Leon was so multi talented, great songwriter too I love how you summed it up. He had so much charisma on stage. I saw many of his concerts in the 70's and he was always great. Nobody like him.

Tumbleweed Connection is the best album ever released by anyone. It was released in 1970. It got little notice and produced no noticeable hits. I became an EJ fan in 1973 when I heard Goodbye Yellow Brick road. I saved up enough money to buy EJ's albums prior to Goodbye Yellow Brick road. When I listened to Tumbleweed Connection, I was blown away. To have EJ say he wants to return to that type of music makes me happy. Any of you who have not listened to Tumbleweed Connection, I urge you to do so.

I got the surprise of a lifetime - I bought tickets to see Elton John in Chattanooga, Tennessee a few years back. When I got to the venue there were two pianos on stage - I'm thinking - OMG - is Leon going to perform tonight? I was in shock when he came on stage. Nothing was said about Leon being there - no advertisement that I saw - but I'm telling you - to see Leon Russell and Elton John on the same stage was a life changing experience for me that I will never forget! It was a fabulous show! The only regret I have is that I didn't bring my brother with me because he is a huge Leon Russell fan. I called him from the concert and told him that I could not believe I was seeing Leon Russell peform!

Back around 2009 or so, I was so fortunate to accidentally find myself and my wife driving through the Texas hill country and one day going tubing. Near the river there was a smallish outdoor theater. We were out in the middle of nowhere. On a billboard it said Bob Dylan. So I went over there and asked is this for real. And it was Bob Dylan with Leon Russell and another opening act. I couldn't believe it, so we went. It was the only chance I would ever have to see Leon Russell, although I had had several of his albums back in the day. Someone said the reason that Dylan was there because some of the road crew liked to play there and go tuning. Wow, out of nowhere, there they were.

There's some footage called The Paradise studios recordings, it is he and JJ , lots of others also but you say more of JJ on this film then you've ever seen of him. Also what makes the whole thing worth watching is JJ showing you his guitar and how he's modified it. I think he was really depressed towards the end he was always kind of a recluse but Mark knopfler pretty much stole his entire style. I think it was kind of angry about that. And I don't know what Eric Clapton would have done without JJ songwriting after midnight etcetera. I believe that he also wrote they call me the breeze. But you probably know that cuz you're a fan.

First off, let me say I absolutely adore both these greats. That being said, I think it's ironic that they've come together to collaborate because it's often been said that both can be egotistical and 'difficult'. Leon Russell is one of the greatest of the greats in rock history. I guess they've both mellowed through the years. I've missed Leon

Wow, Elton reminds me of the good old days of Elton John. And Leon Russell has a new fan. I've heard of him and a couple of his songs, However, I wasn't into his music at the time. As I hear him sing, his voice takes me back when I did hear him on the radio. After hearing them together head to head on the pianos, I can't wait to hear the whole CD and maybe attend a concert when they perform together again.

Thank you Reg, for remembering Leon and helping him to realize how much he is/was loved and respected. I was blessed to see him 3x in concert, early 70s and last in 2010. Yeah, he was a bit more frail then, needed "a man who's young to walk him around". But the music was still there.

Leon was originally a session man. He did a lot of keyboards for groups like Gary Lewis and the Playboys! Truth is stranger than fiction. Listen to the song "Count Me In", that must be Leon. His piano solos have a special sound.
