Saw him first during the Joe Cocker "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. The impression that Leon made on stage, though he was a "sideman," is indelible. The show was at San Francisco's Winterland. Van Morrison, just after his "Moondance" LP, was second bill. I'm almost 73-years-old. That show was the greatest of the three best shows I ever saw. The Beatles (Chicago's International Amphitheater; August, 1966), because of their being idols of mine, and Bob Marley and the Wailers (Santa Barbara County Bowl; May, 1976) were the other two. Because of having seen these live shows, I consider myself very fortunate.
I've seen EVERYONE live, but when I saw Leon Russell sing Masquerade with Edgar Winter on alto sax in a Toronto night club I knew I was experiencing the most transcendental musical moment of my life. ... Elton John is absolutely right to regard Leon as a musical God.
One of the greatest moments for me was seeing Leon at the BUT (Belly Up Tavern) several years ago. A Song For You is just sublime! To top it off, in the middle of his concert Johnny Rivers walked on stage so they did a few of Johnny's hits like Secret Agent Man and Slow Dancing (Swaying to the Music).
First met Leon at Muscle Shoals Sound in 1970. Will not ever forget for I worked with him in 1972 onward. He will be forever in my thoughts. God be with you,,,.rest in peace eternally!!!!

I first saw Leon in 1972 at the Boston Tea Party I was 20 years old it was the beginning of a life long enjoyment of following his music and lyrics I never really enjoyed piano in rock music until Leon opened my eyes and mostly my ears to it. I saw him some 40 years for the last time when he played in Foxborough Massachusetts at the Patriots stadium in a small venue I sat two booths from him and it was the closest I sat next to him and his piano he played for almost two hours of the most entertaining music I’ve ever heard and I’m 68 now and have seen my share of rock since the mid 60s I thank the music Gods for letting me grow up and live through Leon’s music career I’ll never forget you Leon I still listen to him on Vinyl and CD. RIP, Leon, you are and will always be missed.
me and you might be ridin' the same train - mine pulled out in September '58 and it's still rollin' along but is only doing about 1/4 it's original speed!. I also heard Leon around that age. I think Delta Lady may have been the first one I heard.
Saw Mad Dogs and Englishmen at the Fillmore East in 1970. We saw EVERYONE there, but Leon, Joe & the entire troupe were otherworldly. Sold My Soul To Rock 'N' Roll! Miss that Band so; especially the back-up Gals. Whew! " 20 ft. from Stardom"?? Space Captains one and all...R.I.P. So glad Leon was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Great show.
As I recall, I saw someone from the tour interviewed- can't remember if it was one of the female back-up singers, or...nonetheless, to paraphrase: Leon eventually took over the entire "production" of the tour, and as Joe became more and more "ineffectual", and unable to assert his vision; his playlist; his drinking became prohibitively alarming! He was dooming his performances, and no one stepped in to "encourage" him/or Leon to augment things- for the sake of the Tour. The shows were so spectacular, I don't think most fans felt there was a big problem. That was Leon's greatness, however. He surely was a Master of Space and Time, and already a legendary icon -across so many musical genres, and with so many artists. It was no secret that he eventually took over, but in hindsight, many "critics' wrote of their shock that this would be a surprise to anyone - least of all to Joe's personal band. Joe will forever be remembered as a Rock 'n' Roll original. Sad for Joe that Leon was a seasoned steamroller, and unintentionally caused Joe to be underappreciated. I asked Leon to sign "Hummingbird" on my tee, and he was kind enough to comply. I am grateful I got to see him when Elton made a push to get him out on the road, again. What a gift ! May they ALL rest in PEACE!!
I have the great pleasure of seeing Leon Russell live soooo many times i lost count. 1st time was early 70's Hollywood Sportatorium in South Florida in his hey day about time of the Concert for Bangladesh. I was in high school then and Leon blew the roof off the place stomping on the piano wearing his top hat. There's never been another performer like Leon who was also a spectacular songwriter. I still miss him. RIP Leon- you did good ❤

Wrote “Superstar”, my favorite by The Carpenters. When asked by an interviewer which version of “Superstar” he liked most, Leon Russell said “I have always been a huge fan of Karen Carpenter. The Carpenters loved Russell so much, they covered two of his other songs “A Song For You” and “This Masquerade”.
this man was rock n roll...........but he was also country.......he was also bluesy........on so many records we aren't aware of, and a body of work of his own that makes one's jaw drop. Fans know he could blow out the lights with much of his music, and then offer up a This Masquerade, A Song for You, and more, what an ear for ballads...........miss the man, thank goodness we have video, cd's music files, LP's, etc

I'm just in a Leon kind of mood tonight watching a lot of his stuff. Never heard him do this before. This song by Danny O'Keefe came out in 1972 I just graduated from college in Omaha and stayed in town and got a job. Everyone I hung with also graduated....and left town. After a few months, I couldn't take it anymore, quit the job and took off hitchhiking and ended up on Cape Cod. This was pretty much my theme song and said it all for me at that time. Beautiful song with such a haunting feeling to it.
Seen Leon back in 1972 at The New Haven Arena, New Haven, Ct. Wow, what a show! He and his Bass player Carl Radle had just played "The Concert for Bangladesh" with George Harrison a few months prior. What a piano player Leon is as well as singer/ songwriter! 🤗🤎🎹🎅🏿

me too, àt a Warehouse in Nawlins, saw Him a little later at Pistol Pete Assembly Center àt LSU, each and every time I saw him, he was a Phenomenal Show Man, jus sayin ¡😎¡
This blows me away! I was lucky enough to to see him at a small venue in Manhattan called the Lone star cafe way back in the early 80's. He was magnificent
Can't get over that he's gone. Set apart from many others of the day by his ability to be in the world but not of it yet respected by most musicians for his contributions to the art. I'm heartbroken that those unusual soulful eyes are now closed forever.

Thanks for posting this, Don. Letterman wasn't available in Australia during the eighties so it was great to see one of my favourite writer/performers one more time. So cool. RIP Leon, Dr John and Levon Helm.
I’m so glad I was lucky enough to see him at a small club near Pittsburgh in the 80s. And so glad that through the magic of music he will be remembered and LOVED for all time. May God bless you and yours always, Leon!💝💝💝

From Sinatra to Harrison Leon was top shelf. He told a story once about recording with George Harrison. George was a perfectionist and after dozens of takes Leon was tired of the BS. So he went back and played a take for George. G. H. loved it an asked which one was it? Leon stated It's the first take George! The first concert I ever saw was in LA, 3 Dog Night, Elton John, and Leon Russell with his back up singer Rita Coolidge. I think it was around 1970, large arena venue. My first boyfriend was a bouncer there on week ends so I'd get in free. What amazing performers. Couldn't sit down for the whole concert, real music .

@@accountingdepartment6893 Are you in any FB music groups. We have a few for Leon. One is here: facebook.com/groups/169089514073/
Ditto for me in April 1970 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A few years ago, in Little Rock, Arkansas right before his death, I got him to autograph my ticket stub from that April 1970 show.
me too, àt a Warehouse in Nawlins, saw Him a little later at Pistol Pete Assembly Center àt LSU, each and every time I saw him, he was a Phenomenal Show Man, jus sayin ¡😎¡
This blows me away! I was lucky enough to to see him at a small venue in Manhattan called the Lone star cafe way back in the early 80's. He was magnificent
The Lone Star on 5th was a great club.
So glad I found this one. Leon Russell a extremely talented musician
One of the greats, love his voice
🌟Superstar songwriter 🌟
He never failed to put a good show on RIP leon
Can't get over that he's gone. Set apart from many others of the day by his ability to be in the world but not of it yet respected by most musicians for his contributions to the art. I'm heartbroken that those unusual soulful eyes are now closed forever.

He gave Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers their first record deal on his label Shelter Records!
From Sinatra to Harrison Leon was top shelf. He told a story once about recording with George Harrison.
George was a perfectionist and after dozens of takes Leon was tired of the BS. So he went back and
played a take for George. G. H. loved it an asked which one was it? Leon stated It's the first take George!

The first concert I ever saw was in LA, 3 Dog Night, Elton John, and Leon Russell with his back up singer Rita Coolidge. I think it was around 1970, large arena venue. My first boyfriend was a bouncer there on week ends so I'd get in free. What amazing performers. Couldn't sit down for the whole concert, real music .
Wish we could go back in time…
I saw Leon Russel in Dallas in '72 just him and his band. He was an amazing artist, one of a kind and so underrated.❤
