    this is, by far, Ralfy's most savage review to date. just brutal. i had this stuff in a bar years ago and found it quite good. savage.

      I was enjoying a dram of this while watching the review. I had to double check the bottle to see if I was indeed enjoying the same whisky he was savaging. Love Ralpy, but respectfully disagree on this one.

    This is one time I didn't listen to a review. I find that the Aberfeldy to be nice. Is it the best no, but I am glad my tastes find different than yours do yes. I believe that it will be a regular addition to the stock. Aberfeldy won't be a daily drink but one to mix things up.
    That's the nice thing about whiskey we all have different tastes and flavors change a bit from person to person.
    Thanks Ralfy.

    I spend too much money on single malts. Aberlour 12 is my "go to" dram but I buy a lot of Bunnahabhain and Clynelish too. So when I was given a bottle of this a while back as a present, I watched Ralfy's review and decided to put it away and maybe donate it to a raffle at the kids school or something similar. Anyway to cut a long story short, I saw all these 5 star reviews on Amazon and decided (reluctantly) to give it a try. It is delicious and in my layman's opinion stands up well against the likes of Old Poulltney and Highland Park and some of Ralfy's favourites in this price band. I love the sweetness of the sherry casks, and the stand-out after taste of Suchard's milk chocolate. I am a happy philistine because I love this whisky. I suspect ralfy just got out of the wrong side of the bed that day. Cheers

    It's by far not the best whiskey I've had, but just had a couple drams of the stuff and was curious to see what you thought about it..... I'm surprised I didnt think it was that bad, i mean it's not mind blowing but it's a decent whiskey for the price.

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@VoxGothica I'm sure I've watched it, regardless of my thoughts on aberfeldy I enjoy all of Ralphy's videos. The guy seems to know his stuff, and I can attest to buying at least 3 bottles of $$$ hooch based on his reviews. But just last night, we had a bit of snowstorm come through, so I headed out to the hot tub, and instead of the Macallan gold, I grabbed the aberfeldy. I polished off about a fifth of the bottle while the snow raged around me. Now while I'll attest that I couldn't make out the faint linger of citrus, marigold and diesel fuel, it was a fine fine refreshment, that went down warm, but not burning, and rewarded my loyalty with one of the most pleasant, mellowest buzz that I have ever had on scotch (could have been the hypothermia from the heat). The stuff just isn't that bad and I do feel that a certain element of "scotch snobbery" tends to permeate these types of reviews. There's a beer around here called boneshaker, and the beer snobs praise it for it's "bold taste and bright green hops flavor". The stuff literally tastes like dragon piss, and those wonderful green hops are actually burning away the lining of your esophagus.... So sometimes you just gotta call something for what it is. I suppose Aberfeldy would be the bud light of scotch, but damn if they don't sell a hell of a lot of bud light (I am not defending bud light, I only drink Guinness). So not a bash on Ralph...I even watch his brother, these guys would be a hoot to hang out in a pub with. Cheers!

    5 years and a few days on after your review watching this while having some of this malt. I wonder if the flavour profile has changed since your review. I found a lot of the notes you did, however I did not get the acidity or sharpness you found then. Definitely not very complex, but one of the least expensive single malts available in Canada. Great information in the second half of the review on comparing whisky of differing quality Ralfy, thanks. I hope you get back to Bonneville some day.

    I usually agree with your reviews of the Scotch’s that I’ve tried and I buy scotch based on your reviews if I can find it. I do not claim to have the developed nose and taste buds of a whiskey connoisseur such as yourself but I am coming along. This one is different. This one reminds me that reviews are one persons opinion and the weight of the review if I hadn’t purchased a bottle before hand might have made me sidestep this one. I tried a dram prior to looking up to see if you reviewed this scotch and rather enjoyed it. I just now sat down and poured another dram to follow along with you.
    There are a few points that we are in agreement but did the most part I find more facets of complexity than you do. I especially enjoy the coffee/espresso after taste. Sure, nose is a bit thin but I get some Orange and pineapple fruitiness.
    Much respect Ralphy but I’m glad to be at odds with this review. It reminded me that I need to rely on my own nose and tongue in the end as I build a collection. That’s the beauty of our individual journeys. We all like and enjoy different experiences. Keep up the good work Ralphy but remember that your experience and expectations are yours. I’d have passed this one up if I didn’t buy it prior to hearing your opinion. It’s a descent scotch in my opinion. This one adds some more variety to my collection.

    Hi Ralfy, I agree to your verdict, it should be non-chill filtered and 46% alc. volume. I would only add that in the nose it has some interesting wax/candle note, maybe letting to uprgade it to 82;).

    I tried Aberfeldy 12 slightly over a year ago. I liked it, and found it better than Old Pulteney 12 and far, far better than Highland Park 12, which I tried around the same time. But then, Ralfy's description of the nose and palate of his bottle Aberfeldy 12 seems very much different than what I remember of my own experience. I am suspecting "batch" variation is at play, with Ralfy having the poor luck to get a bottle from a bad batch. Either that or what I tasted came from a batch much better than the norm.

      I put this side by side with Pulteney 12 just now and Pulteney came out as much hotter and rough/dirty - Aberfeldy 12 by no means comes out as second best to the Pulteney which Ralf himself has described as 'great'. Also the Aberfeldy does not seem to be sherried now, so maybe its changed since Ralf reviewed it, who knows....

    Something has to be said about the price point ralfy. Frankly you get what you pay for but as this is a single malt that can be bought at such a low price point, I would say it is the best mass marketing introductory malt out of the standard Glenlivet, Glenfiddich

    I bought a bottle last week on special at Costco. The majority of commenters here seem to think Ralfy was overly brutal is the review. I agree with the majority. I'm enjoying Aberfeldy 12. Not terribly complex but very smooth and flavorful. Ralfy must have gotten a bad bottling.

  • @TheOriginalRaster
    @TheOriginalRaster 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I enjoyed the review... thanks! I had purchased the Aberfeldy 12 and somewhere I saw a review indicating it was OK. The thing that made me want to try it: some comment that it contributes one of the main taste components in Dewars White Label Blend. Dewars was one of the first blends I tried, and I noted that my 86 year old (Englishman) friend who was introducing me to Scotch selected the Dewars as his "drink too much every afternoon/evening" bottle to dilute with water, add ice and knock them down like cool-aid one after the other...
    Trying my Dewars this way it had a strange appeal (equal amounts water, plus ice). After hearing (here and elsewhere) that the Dewars was no good I was trying to reconcile why I was actually enjoying it diluted exactly like my 86 year old friend enjoys it. My friend had specifically mentioned I would notice a slight Iodine taste. So I was buying the Aberfeldy to try out a better version of that Dewers taste. I do recall noticing the flavor component of the Dewars in my Aberfeldy 12.
    Did I get this wrong? Do you think this Aberfeldy is a contributor to the Dewars, the White Label perhaps?

    Today, Aug 20, 2020, I bought a bottle for $32 US Dollars at my local Costco. I was hesitant but I bought it. Just tasted it, luckily before I watch this review. Not bad, nice slight smoke, reminded me slightly of Highland Park, but at 3/4 less price of Highland Park, this was a good value. Yes, it wasn’t as fully smooth and round as Highland Park, but I’m a cheap whisky drinker and I was happy with it. Oh, remember, reviews of Highland Park 12 weren’t stellar. I think it was 88 out of 100. Somethings wrong with that rating.

    I just got a bottle of this today and as always when I can I have my first sip while watching one of your reviews. You gave it an 81 I was thinking 78. I paid 60$ Canadian for it and feel like I could have gotten many better whiskys for that price. It is a nice change of pace for me though since I usually drink Laphroag, Bowmore and Ardbeg whiskys. There is a bottle of Bruichladdich 12 year old for 70$ that is much better all around, smell, taste, mouthfeel, complexity and even bottling. I should have gotten that lol

    While I respect your review, and know you're a proponent of, "drink what you like, " I must say Aberfeldy has a permanent place on my shelf. it's not a top end product, but for friends that are not regular whiskey drinkers, Aberfeldy does well as a gateway scotch, and as one you don't want to focus on. A drink for conversing, if you will.

    I am not a sophisticated whiskey drinker at all. I understand what Ralfy is saying about the Aberfeldy 12 lacking depth and complexity but for some reason, that's kind of what I like about it. Make your own opinion on this one.
    I gave it a go in spite of a couple of reviews saying it's a forgettable one because I love a fruity scotch. And it's exactly that, and it's good at that.
    It's very well worth its price, it's a quality dram, with that typical single malt scotch refinement and nutty touch, which goes great with the subtle hints of acidity. It's well balanced, it tastes great, it's smooth with a gentle kick and it's not flawed. It's perhaps not the most refined and mind-blowing for finicky connaisseurs but for this price range I find it way above average. I quite love it actually.
    Check the tasting notes from people who are more competent than me at describing a whisky, and if you're into that kind of things you should definitely try it.

    Hey Ralfy, another good review as always. got a quick question for you. I'm a huge fan of Talisker 10 year old (it has to be in my cabinet at ALL times) and i've noticed the increasing amounts of non age statement products they've come out with. i've counted at least 6 or 7 so far. why do some of these distilleries like Talisker and Ardbeg come out with SO MANY non age statement Whiskies? is there just such a huge demand for them now or is it just a marketing ploy to keep drinkers interested in their products?

    I bought a bottle recently because it’s not overpriced where I am relative to other 12 year single malts. I would say that since it’s similar in price to Glenfiddich 12 that it is at least as good in terms of quality, and it’s something different.

    I have to ask... Has the whisky changed since the re labelling? As all reviews seem to generally be quite positive, for this product(with the old labelling). I think from my personal experience this was a good introductory whisky.

    Wow, Ralfy... you really don’t like this stuff!!! Personally, I really like Aberfeldy 12. Not the most complex single malt of course, but it’s a lovely warm comfort whisky. I have to say, I’m drinking it in a Glencairn and beside it a Norlan whisky glass. The Norlan takes away a lot of the spirit nose, and leaves the spice, caramelised fruit and raisins. Just my opinion, but I like it.

    Hey Ralfy, you should review a top quality bottling of Aberfeldy... I know, few and far between though. When I tasted their 21 year old 40% distillery offering years ago, I though there was promise there, but of course that promise was obscured by the disappointingly poor delivery. Recently saw a distillery special release 17 year old single cask Aberfeldy distilled 1996 bottled 2013 at cask strength 61.5% matured in an amontillado sherry hogshead, so I jumped on it. An absolutely brilliant whisky, everything I imagined an Aberfeldy could be.

    No worries about me having to pour out whisky Ralfy, that is why I come to Ralfy.com, and so far you have not let me down. My budget is tight and I can't afford to take too my risks when buy whisky. I'm battling my diet as well, and my older body seems to require less calories, despite my daily four to five mile walks. Good luck Ralfy! I hope you have a safe record breaking run.

    I was very surprised to see the title of this review. We went to Mexico for a week vacation at the end of March and I picked up a bottle of this at duty free in Philadelphia. It was only $50 for a litre but I was massively disappointed. I thought it was me; I mean after all who plans on sipping scotch during a beach vacation! But it just was, well, blahhhhhh. So unlike Donald I can't blame Mexico for my bad experience, nice to have Ralfy agree with me.

    Thanks for this review. I almost thought I am the only one. I had a sample of the 21 year old Aberfeldy, same experience, great nose, watery taste! And I agree, it´s the same with Dalmore and also Bowmore! Too much deluted, to much coloring ...

    Great review Ralfy as usual. Many thanks for your efforts.
    Based on your review I just purchased a bottle of Old Pulteney 12 @43% 750ml (in Los Angeles, USA). Such a good whisky.
    It came in twin pack with Old Pulteney Navigator @46%, natural color, non chilled filtered. Tastes great too.
    The Navigator has no age statement though, but is sells for more than the 12.
    Are you planning any review for the Navigator? (my underdeveloped single malt taste buds liked it more than the 12).

    So far I like all whisky where Ralphy rated low: Aberfieldy12, Lochlomond10 (a way better than 18), Lagavulin 10 (a way better than 16)... dont know why. Aberfieldy I did not like at first. But then I tried to taste it on the different part of tongue, that is, in the middle section rather than on the tip or edges. That made it taste so well.

    So many of you are mentioning the price point in terms of getting what you pay for. But here in south Florida, there are a few choices that are superior at even slightly lower price than the Aberfeldy 12 goes for. Superior single malts include Glenmorangie Original (43% to boot!), Glenfiddich 12, Tomatin 12 (also 43%), and most definitely, the blended malt Monkey Shoulder (NAS, but also 43%). All of these can be obtained here for around $30 apiece and are superior to Aberfeldy 12, IMO.

      I have both though not opened the Aberlour 12 yet as I have the 10 as well and the A'bunadh, and I want to to a taste session with all three, but don't have the glasses for them all yet! I think the Aberfeldy 12 will be ok to someone starting out on their whisky journey, its not bogging by any means; just maybe a bit characterless (though I myself have only just opened it watching this review!)

    Ralfy thanks for you review. Aberfeldy 12yo was one of the 1st single malts I tried and I had good memories of it. A few week ago I got another bottle and was, like yourself, disappointed. I also picked up an independent bottling by Montgomerie's and it was also somewhat of a disappointment and it was not cheap ($100 as you said you don't always be what you pay for). Oh well, perhaps nostalgia got the better of me. Like you will not be buying another bottle. But to console myself I have picked up Arran 12yo cask strength, which I am sure will not disappoint. Thank you again for all of your reviews.

    Usually with you on the reviews Ralfy but I'm afraid you lost me on this one. Not only is it very unlike what I get on the nose and palate, so many other reviews are nothing like yours, and are very positive towards it. This is one that most people should try, beginner or otherwise.

    Never thought I'd see Ralfy supping Bell's! The drink for the alky whisky drinker! Was a favourite of my old man when he was heavily drinking, though he only got it to get pished, though he did have taste when he wanted to enjoying the better spirits on the odd occasion.
    Just going through Ralfy's archive one at a time bringing myself back up to the present day, and didn't think he reviewed Aberfeldy 12. I actually bought this recently (along with 10 or so much better quality malts) as it was going cheap and I bought it on a hunch and thought it was good value for an age statement whisky.
    I opened it here watching this review and it is way too early for me to make judgements on it on my first ever dram of the stuff, but it does look like Ralfy has got this spot on so far; not much at all on the nose, and the taste is very dilute. Oh well it does look like it'll be a duffer, but for only 20-odd quid its not an expensive duffer at least! :D

    • @shugaroony
      @shugaroony 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A week on and several drams in and I'm enjoying it more. Its not the finest whisky in the world, but its an easy drinker; one to start off as a beginner, or as one to start a whisky night with most definitely. Quite enjoying it actually.

    Taste is an individual thing, so its not Ralfy's preferred cup of tea, still 81/100 is not a bad score...so to each his own, try it and if you like it....buy more! Cheers!

    The 12 isn’t that bad. The finish is a bit thin, but that nose is very nice. It could be good. It really could have.L been. I think this style suits the younger edition better. I have a fear that it would get tannic with too many years. But man, the 12 should be better. It’s got all the elements. Just not presented as it should be!

      I don't know anyone at all that appreciates this whisky. but hey, if you like it good for you :-).
      IMO it's flat out boring, bland almost tasteless. To my palate it tastes so thin and weak. I actully had to check to make sure it was 40%!!
      Having said that, it's probably quite a good whisky for beginners.
      I'm actually drinking this as I type. just to get rid of it while I watch a few reviews.

      Agree about it being ok for beginners, but HP 12 and Old Pulteney 12 (and maybe a Glenfiddich) will be better value when it comes to cost. I was lucky when I bought all of these as they were reduced in the shops.

    From a lot of comments maybe Ralfy got a batch with mediocre casks. It looks like they increased the quality according to all the comments disagreeing with him. I bet the execs at aberfeldy got the message and checked their quality control and fixed it.

  • @francisd2386
    @francisd2386 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you factor in the price when giving a mark? I'd mark it higher than that for the fact I can find this for 45$ on special. Aberfeldy 12 is the kind of scotch whisky I buy the same reason I buy a entry-level bourbon; easy, no question sipping, while preparing dinner for example. For a 40% ABV, I think it has a strong nose and palate, I've seen much weaker whiskies.
