    I've loved all the Glenmorangie I've had from the 10yr to Signet. The Quinta Ruban being my favorite. I really really hate this new labeling though.

      Same, for the most part. My favorite is Nectar d'Or. My taste does not agree with the Quinta. Probably because I'm not a big wine fan. Still need to try Signet.

      Yeah, this was one of my first loves, but I outgrew it and keep a bottle of it around for non anoraks. I do have a couple of their earlier port and burgundy expressions and I thought the Quinta Ruban was pretty good years ago but has gone off due to time or my taste buds.

    I’m going to disagree wholeheartedly with a mark in the 70s. That’s unnecessarily harsh for a bottle that doesn’t really do anything wrong or offensive.
    I get the 43% version here in the US, which I assume is a little better. It’s not the most exciting thing on my shelf, but at its price, it’s hard to argue its value. I don’t feel bad pouring Glenmorangie 10 for a large gathering. I’m not going to serve junk. The frequent scotch drinkers don’t turn it away, the infrequent whisky drinkers aren’t put off, and I haven’t poured Glendronach 18 or Springbank 15 for a whole pile of guests who wouldn’t know or care what makes those whiskies different. (If anyone shows an interest, then we break out the other bottles.)
    Low 80s, ok, I suppose. But this is much too close to the Black Label mark.

    • @terrortower666
      @terrortower666 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      “I get the 43% version here in the US”
      Well that’s probably why you would score it higher, as you’re getting more quality from it at that percentage of bottling

    • @francisdec1615
      @francisdec1615 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We used to have 43% as the minimum strength for whisky here in Europe, but then the EU came around. There are versions of our Swedish Absolut Vodka that you can only buy in the US as well, like the 50%🙄
      Anyway, I think Glenmorangie is worth something like 80 at least. We had a neighbour who didn't know much about whisky, and my father doesn't know much about whisky either, but I suggested that he should buy our neighbour Glenmorangie 10 yo for his 80th birthday (if I remember correctly), and he liked it very much.

    The whisky that got me into whisky to start with, so will always have a bottle in my stash for sentimental reasons. Yes people slag it off, but it's very approachable, and still tasty. People who are far into the journey forget, without easy to drink malts like this there would be a lot less Malt Mates out there.

    I've been drinking whisky for over 10 years. I've learned so much since starting watching Ralfy on youtube 6 months ago. If you are starting your whisky journey have a look at Ralfy's channel it will save you a lot of time and probably money in the long run. As he usually says though if you're just starting, stick to cheaper brands for a while get used to them. Then when you try something better with a higher strength like 46% you will appreciate the difference and it won't blow your mind. Glenmorangie is a great brand as they have some good experimental malts in there core range that are usually easy to get a hold of and a fair price. Welcome to the wonderful world of whisky!

    I think your last review was more adjusted to reality. But its true that, if i remember correctly, you praised the bottle for remaining the same through the years, so i can understand that you lower the score now given the awful redisign of the bottle and box. Still, given the price of the bottle and how distinctive the flavour profile is, and of course assuming all the flaws, i dont think it deserves such a low score. I think your battle against non integrity bottlings is going a little too far, you are attacking Glenmorangie 10, a bottle that only deserves admiration in my honest opinion. Maybe im wrong, who knows.

      I’m right there with you. That score is in “new disjointed bottlings of Black Label” territory, and it just doesn’t belong there.
      On the other hand, it’s Ralfy’s score, not yours or mine. I still think it’s a fine step up from blends to single malts. Nothing wrong with enjoying it or keeping it in your cabinet.

    The stores here in Texas sell the 43% ABV version of the Glenmorangie 10. It's a decent, gentle whisky, but I would LOVE to taste a non-chill filtered 50% or even a cask strength bottling of this. You just know it would have a considerably more intense array of flavors - it would likely taste like the saucy big sister to this malt. If you find the Glenmorangie 10 too bland, just add a few drops of your favorite Islay whisky to a dram and it will wake right up.

    Glenmorangie was my first foray into single malt and it was inside a tent after climbing Ben Nevis. It will always hold a special place in my malty heart, but now I’ve moved on to more complex malt moments. However, when I do have a sip of Glenmorangie I always think back to that tent, my legs and feet throbbing from the ascent and descent, my belly full of haggis and having a laugh with my best friends.

Nowadays I don't think the event in the glass would be worth the price but if it was on offer at a party that would probably be the right environment for its uncomplicated sweetness. Can't say the new branding is really doing it any favours though.

    Think we get this at 43% in the US but it's been a while. Am not a fan of the 12-14 year old ones where they take this base 10 and finish it in another type of cask. If they did a Whisky nerd version of the 10 at 50% NCF NC it would fly off the shelves at a price high enough for them to make more profit than they do on this bottle. Looking at old dusty bottles for sale at The Whisky Exchange I see this is something they have done as a special release in the past but in today's world this needs to be a core range offering.

I think it's good to go back to these entry-level staples every so often even if to see if anything's changed. I'll probably pick up a bottle at some point, the price isn't too bad here in NC USA. Glenmorangie is the one malt that completely disagrees with me. I bought a bottle of the 10yo and over the course of several weeks tried drinking it every way I could, but never managed to enjoy it. Determined to give Glenmorangie a second chance, I took a glenmorangie masterclass tasting on a whisky cruise, but alas my opinion didn't change. The tasting certainly gave a much wider breadth of flavors (it must've been 6 different glenmorangies, if not more), but none of them agreed with me. It's puzzling, considering I don't have a hard preference with malts; I'll just as well enjoy an islay as I will a speyside as I will a highland. But Glenmorangie? I can't imagine buying another bottle.

  • @jleano609
    @jleano609 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    GlenMo 10yo is as honest as the day is long. No, it's not overly complex stuff but it's well priced, minimally over-marketed and incredibly direct and consistent. Yes, it's chill filtered, yes it's only 40-43% but at the price what do you expect? For a 10yo whisky there's enough going on to keep one engaged and any youthfulness is exuberant instead of harsh. The Irn Bru fizz in particular adds to the whisky IMHO. Whisky can be TOO SMOOTH. you want a wee bit of bite on a cold winter's night.
    There is always a bottle on my countertop as my everyday dram. I pray that owners LVMH never monkey around with it too much. Glenmorangie X is a bit worrying. Keeping finger crossed.
    also - Ralfy rated it far higher back in the day. I appreciate that tastes evolve, as does the industry but I think this still deserves mid 80s.

    From a late batch with the old label- reduced price. First one I've had in about 10 years. Compared to how I remember it, a bland shadow of its old self. All the notes just slightly what they were. Slightly sweet. Slightly fruity. Bitterness is the most stand out. It arrives midway and stays to the end. It finishes like a missed putt. There was an ambery flame in its old palate, that isn't there anymore. Boring and disappointing. I'd give it 74, then subtract 4 for losing its old magic

    Too sweet, for me. The alcohol and malt hit right off. Since I'm a cigar smoker, I don't pick up half what you do. I put one tbs of water too it and that made it drinkable and took the alcohol edge off for me.

    I generally enjoy single malt. There are two I can't tolerate: Highland Park 12 and this. I don't know why but I've tried it many times and every time it's undrinkable for me. But I love that everyone has their own that they enjoy.

      @@kryszian675 You've got a point, but it is honestly the worst, I can remember in the whisky world.
      For instance, I did prefer the old Benromach branding and bottles, and I know that that rebranding splits the crowd a bit. But I don't think it's downright awful as I do with this Glenmo rebranding.
      I also liked the old Arran bottles (quite a bit) better than the new ones, but at least their new label design still has a classy look. Some, would say boring, but I'm 100% a "less is more" kinda guy (which may be interpreted as old and boring 😉)

    In recent years I’ve found Glenmorangie to be particularly disappointing 😞 You seriously have to wonder why it was ever so popular. Either tastes have changed or, more likely, standards have fallen with more emphasis on hype than quality. The new labelling would tend to confirm that this is the case, it’s absolutely dreadful, looks like some marketing executives wet dream. Unfortunately Glenmorangie aren’t the only ones that have fallen for some marketing companies nonsense. Benromach was another but, at least, their product isn’t plumbing the depths to which Glenmorangie has gone. All very sad really, but that’s what happens when people listen to the bean counters and the marketing execs hype. Quality is the thing they should be striving for. I find I’m tending to buy many more independent bottlings than those punted out by the likes of Diageo etc. as that’s where the true quality and best expressions of product now tend to be found.

    • @timkempisty258
      @timkempisty258 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tastes change, especially for folks who are far into a whisky journey. Your palate learns to find all the complexities. That takes time, patience, and a lot of money. We should all be so lucky.
      Lots of people just want “a scotch whisky”, and they balk at throwing down much more than 50 bucks for a bottle. They’re probably looking at Glenmorangie 10 as a single malt splurge compared to Cutty or Black Label. I would not hesitate one second to recommend GM10 as well worth the step up to Single Malt world.

    It's a ubiquitous supermarket whisky, quite often you can get for £30. Unsurprisingly there are non-ubiquitous whiskies at a similar age statement that are more complex and more expensive. I don't think you can mass produce a complex whisky which you can sell for £30. It's not a case of which is better, but what type of whisky it is. Ubiquitous supermarket at a reasonable price or complex, pricier (£45+) non-supermarket. You cannot be both.
