    That was a great Grab Bag to start the weekend off with, thank you all at VRF. I liked seeing Executive livery BNSF SD70MAC running at speed thru Austell. I don't know why, but the Darwins at San Juan always look to their left, but never look to their right - and that one, was a pretty close call. LTEX - keep those GP15s coming and good-on you.
    Most of all at Paradise, Mogul No.89 (my favourite wheel configuration) I thought that the Locomotive looked fantastic and nice to see the passengers enjoying their journey.

      Trains can line up right next to each other going the same way on the BNSF Cajon Sub as long as its past an ABS signal, if it’s a CTC signal then they’d have to get permission from the dispatcher to do so.

    I had a few questions for the number of powered locomotives when there were 7 to 13 lead locomotives, 3 DPU center, and 4 to 7 pusher/helper locomotives at the end of the train. No one could tell me if all these locomotives were needed. I found the answer myself thanks to cameras and mic's close to the rails. It took me almost a year to watch and listen close to obtain this information. The most lead loco's I have seen powered were 5 if they were 6 axle loco's and 6 powered loco's if there were multiple 4 axle locomotives. Any additional head-end/lead locomotives were just along for the move and not even operating. I have seen as many as 3 center DPU's but usually only 1 or 2 operating, with the additional loco's not powered. And the most pusher/helper locomotives at the end of the train I have seen were 3, with any other locomotives at the end of the train not even powered. There may be additional locomotives powered in DPU configurations, but the hundreds of trains I saw I haven't seen or heard them. There can always be exceptions to the rules. I thought I would share this information. If you decide to tell others, I would appreciate if you mention you got the information from me, and ask others to do the same if they present this information.

      I was wondering why the sprayer had so many engines for 3 cars, but seems it does a lot of back and forth. All those powered wheels probably make that much easier/faster.

    • @cncpreferred848
      @cncpreferred848 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timbrwolf1121 That is a Loram Rail Grinding train. That segment starts at 16:01. The silver frames under some of the cars are the rail grinders. Each of the grinder cars, 5 total, has it's own power which is why you can see the exhaust of the diesel engine that powers a generator to supply electric to the grinding motors. The sprayer is to prevent fires. As the rail is being ground, there are red hot sparks in the 1800 degree F range. That is why it runs back and forth to make sure the area is wet to prevent fires. You can see at 16:29, smoke is starting to rise near a box and utility pole. There are two locomotives, one at each end of the train. The black cars are the water tanks. Also, some of the video is at 3 times normal speed. The Loram train usually moves at walking speed so it is not difficult to move back and forward. I hope this helps answer you questions.

      The WB UP was stopped at Lugo for a red signal. The DS allowed the WB BNSF to nose up to and stop behind it. After the EB passed on M1, the UP got the green and switched over to M1 at Lugo. BNSF also continued West staying on M1. They were stacked up on the Cajon sub that afternoon.

    • @braineyac
      @braineyac ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This also could have had ABS signals which allow train crew to pass them even on red as long as they reduce to speed that allows them to stop in half of the sighted distance

    • @SynchroScore
      @SynchroScore ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Av-vd3wkThe head of the rail wears out over time, and can develop flat spots, surface cracks, and other defects. This special train goes along at about 5mph and grinds the railhead with abrasive wheels to restore it to the proper profile. Naturally, this shoots out a lot of glowing-hot metal particles (I've seen one at night, it's very impressive), and as seen here, they are hot enough to light dry grass on fire. The black tank cars are filled with water, and there are both fixed sprayer nozzles and a big nozzle operated by a crew member at the back, to take care of this.

      The Amtrak train at 7:00 most likely had one or both of the P42s die, so they had to get help from BNSF. The train at 21:15 is actually a BNSF train. They have their own set of passenger cars for special events.

    I hope the channel owners are sending a copy of the recording of the fender-bender, as well as the recording from the incident in Elkhart which was (understandably) not included in the grab bag, to the authorities who are responsible for investigating these accidents. There's no reason anyone should have to go through a prolonged investigation when it just happened to occur right in front of a camera. Not that it's "lucky" to have it on camera; "lucky" would mean not having it happen at all. But given that accidents do happen, better to have it clearly recorded than not.
