Hello Paul! Thank you so much for the lesson! My examples:
Had I spoken English in my childhood, I would have known English better now.
I would have been there on time had I had a car.
Had she not graduated from one of the best Universities, she never would have gotten such a good job.

    It's just excellent to know this structure of the conditionals (I can't remember the grammatical name of that structure) but I prefer to use the other one 'cause it's easier, like in;
    - "If she had never broken her leg, she never would have met her husband".
    OR.
"If she'd never broken her leg, she never would've met her husband.

For me as German it's funny as the same construction in German exists, but I think much more comprehensive.
So you could use not only "had" as auxiliary verb, but also as full verb:
Hättest du Angst, würdest du weglaufen = Had you fear you would run away
And any other verb in conditional form (help verbs)
Könntest du fliegen, würdest du aus dem Fenster springen = could you fly you would jump out of the window
    Or even full verbs:
Nähme ich Unterricht, könnte ich schneller lernen = Did I take (lit. "took I") courses I could learn faster.
Please tell me if these constructions are possible in (American) English and have they been "imported" by German immigrants?

This statement would, perhaps, be made to suggest that my life would have been easier in some way had I only become a doctor. The "only" is hard to explain. It can be interpreted a few different ways. It could indicate sarcasm or it could indicate the low probability of that ever happening.

Great tip, but I can hardly remember anyone actually using *HAD* in real conversation instead of *IF* . Is there any specific reason to use HAD?
You could easily say "If I new, I would've made different arrangements" or "If he studied for the test he would've gotten a better score" etc.
    Great lesson though.. 👍

    • @Learnamericanenglishonline

I guess the reason for using "Had I..." instead of "If I had..." is speed. It's one less word. But it's fairly common, so you should be aware of it. Also, if you do it the right way, it sounds like you have mastered English--at that moment.
