I just bought Telesin ND Filters last week and thank goodness i found your videos. This will help me a lot on how to use mine properly. I will follow your channel and hoping for more guides and tutorials. Thank you sir!
I'm thinking of buying a new camera for my motorbike rides, but it has all seemed pretty difficult to understand, this video was excellent and having it explained by a professional, i could t have asked for better. Thanks a million dave. Ride safe, and Merry Christmas
Great little vid Dave have just got the nd flitters from dji for when I go to France on the bike in a couple of weeks make scene now 👍 keep up the great vids mate
Thank you Dave. Exactly what I needed. Quick recap, if it’s a fairly cloudy day or rainy, would I increase the white balance to something like 6000k? This is my first time ever coming into contact with camera terms and the way they operate. What settings would be needed to change for a typical cloudy day and then what settings for a rainy murky day?
Hi and thanks for getting in touch. I’m afraid I have to honour my Patreon members by keeping all camera info and tech know how exclusive to them. This was part of my promise to my Patreon members so it would be unfair to them if I was offering advice free of charge. I hope you understand and of course you can join my page at www.patreon.com/wheeliegoodtv . You can hop on/off at any stage. You can also pick my brains about anything! Many thanks, Dave.
As someone else said it’s all over my head Dave but as you explained the freeze frame shots i could see the differences in them as you pointed them out compared to no filter. It’s a good job you’re a professional as you always produce quality videos 👌🏻👍🏻🏍💨
Many thanks. Freewell is better glass but the Telesin is so quick and easy to use as you just slide the filters over the existing lens. I would prefer Telesin because of this. I just wish they made an ND4 like Freewell.
Great video Dave and very clear on settings and how to use but I have a question, how do you know what ND filter to use and when… is there a easy method to get the correct filter strength?
Thanks bud and good question. It really takes a bit of practice and trial and error. I’ve never used the ND32 and if I’m honest I would have liked an ND4 in the pack rather than a 32. As soon as I see any blue sky I use the ND8 and if there’s bright sunshine then I use 16 as a general rule of thumb.
@@WheelieGoodTV Hi Dave hope you don’t mind me bothering you, tried the filters today and video is so much better than I’ve ever had. Just 1 question I seem to have motion blur when I move my head (camera mounted on helmet) any tips to eliminate this ?

Thank you for making this video, I've been waiting for it quite a while... I started using nd filter with corect shutter speed but turned the rocks easy off and mounted the camera on the rollbar of my car... I will use your settings on the next video 🫡😁👌🏼
Hi Dave, Masterclass! Me thinks you would make a great lecturer. You have convinced me to buy some proper kit such as the DJI and accessories to record my trips. I have the insta360 but your explanations show us amateurs how to achieve some quality. Where's that credit card?🤔
Man great video, i read in more video tutorial, this: "the motion blur effect dont work if the rokstady stabilization are ON" with osmo action3, its true or not? Set: nd filter, 4k 25fps, shutterspeed 1-50, iso 100-800!
Thanks. It’s the other way around really. The stabilisation doesn’t work if you have the ND filter on BUT only in low light when the ND filter should NOT be on. In the correct light conditions, it all works together.
Great channel only just discovered you (came here from TMF recommendation) I have a been an ND user for ages on my mirrorless and have just moved from GoPro to OA4 One question re framerate I have been using 25fps I do a lot of interviews etc with onboards on the same timeline Would I be better off using 50fps I don’t want to mix frame rates on the same timeline (unless slow mo broll) Many thanks Mike
@@LemonDrizzleGang hi Mike, yes I would shoot everything in 50fps if you’re bringing in other sources too. It will keep it all looking pretty much the same where as 25fps is more cinematic so therefore looks different when compared to action cams/drones shot at 50.
Hi, your English is perfect. I use the RS RockSteady stabilisation. It doesn’t crop the picture as much as the other settings but still does a great job. 👌🎥
Hi, Can you please clearify topic using ND +rocksteady? On Gopro I always 4x my shutterspeed with nd filters, overwise there lots of artifacts on video. OA3 doesnt have such problems?
The OA3 does not have these problems if you use them correctly. If you use any filters in low light when the filters don’t need to be used then the camera will produce artifacts. I don’t understand why you say 4 X the shutter speed. To stay inline with the 180 degree rule your shutter speed should only ever be twice that of your frame rate.
@WheelieGoodTV , You right about 180° rule, and low light settings. But GoPro 10 only works with ND filters with 4x SS, or hypersmooth off. In bright shiny day using ND16🤦♂️ Thank you, already order OA4, buy ND filter and test them properly when spring will come to Russia)
@@WheelieGoodTV video stabilisation heavily relies on ss. It MUST be 4x frame speed in order to work correctly (90 degree rule if you want). In your own video you can clearly see how algorithms are struggling to synchronize frames. The only option to shoot video with 180 degree rule on action camera without artifacts - is to disable digital video stabilisation and put the camera on a gimbal
@@Koensol I didn’t use any stabilisation. You should only use ND filters when needed. If the ambient light is too low then NO filters should be used. The stabilisation will NOT work if filters are applied when not needed.
@WheelieGoodTV You were driving your motorcycle in the daylight. If you'd use for example 180° rule at 25 fps, it would be a shutterspeed of 50, at which point the image would be overexposed without nd. Or were you using a higher fps?
@@Koensol Correct with the shutter speed which was set to 50fps. I set the ISO to automatically adjust between 100-1600. It takes a bit of trial and error and experience to know when you need to use a filter or not. This does not mean the footage will be over exposed if a filter is not needed.
My local Dji never brought locally the rain hardcase so I just bought one from aliexpress case for protecting it and it came with a couple of "those" filters that are placed but on top of the hardcase have you tried those just for experiment? Any insight about those? Ps. I dont do video editing just use the camera as a safety feature on traffic and I am going to try them these next few days, cheers
Seems like they work better on the OA3 rather than my GoPro 10. It tends to smear the footage on the GoPro because of hyper smooth needing a high shutter speed. I would think it would be the same with the dji cam but looks like it handles it’s digital stabilization better.
Interesting, especially as we've just bought a second Action 3. We love these cameras, especially compared to the unreliability of the Gopro. To be honest, I wasn't aware of the effect of ND filters on motion blurr so I've definitely learned something on this vid. Looks like we need to get these filters. We've used the Action 3 to film bike shows inside buildings at 4K 60fps and occasionally had overheat shutdown. Have you had that? Obviously, there are no problems in the airstream on a motorcycle.
Hi folks, I’ve never really used my action cam setup for anything inside so I can’t comment on overheating. I can honestly say in nearly a year of ownership, I have had zero problems with my Osmo action 3. So much so, I’ve just ordered a second one for my reverse angle.
@@WheelieGoodTVJust checked with Telesin, the model number OA-FLT-005 seems to be compatible with Osmo action 4 as well, I am still not sure though. If anyone has tried.
Hi Dave, even after watching a couple of times, I am still unsure whether ND filters are what I need to rectify something which is spoiling my videos. On my Osmo 3, I record at 2.7k and leave everything else on auto. If you scroll to about 2:30 on this recent video of mine th-cam.com/video/MHzyALBOx2w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=o-e7kk5hqfVGArwJ I am riding into full Autumn (low) sun, and it’s causing a white edge and dots which I think are reflections off the chrome. Would an ND filter or CPL cure this, or should I be looking at something else ? Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Ian, I’ve checked your footage and all it needs is a good lens clean inside and out. Buy a lens cleaner and use cotton buds right up to the edges on both sides of the clear lens filter. The ND filters and CPL won’t help this at all but they will definitely give you a much better picture. You have great sound quality so improving the picture will add for a greater all round production.
@@WheelieGoodTVDave, for some reason TH-cam didn’t notify me of your reply 😮. Thanks so much for this, much appreciated.
