2015 Chevy Colorado 2.5L Extended Cab 2WD Pickup First Drive Review: I-4 or V-6?

  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2015 Chevy Colorado 2.5L Extended two-wheel-drive Cab pickup is the new entry level and least expensive new Colorado truck that you can buy. Starting at about $22K this work truck is the value and MPG leader of the GM Colorado and Canyon twins. In another TFLtruck first drive review Nathan and Roman take the least expensive GM mid-sized pickup for a drive to see what you get (and don't get) when you opt for the I-4 instead of the V-6.

    I prefer reviews with entry level vehicles like this one or mid-range instead of the most expensive ones which most reviewers treat themselves to. I realise that if you guys had had access to the most expensive colorado that is the one you probably would have reviewed (like the rest). This was very helpful to me because its closer to what I would buy, Thanks guys.

    Okay, so I ended up purchasing a 2016 GMC Canyon 2.5 in extended cab configuration. Pretty much the same kind of truck seen in this video. I have to say this has to be one of the best kept secrets on the truck market. I know that most buyers will automatically opt for the V6 under the perception that the V6 is the must have engine choice. I would say that for some buyers that is absolutely the case. However, I think for a lot of people the 2.5 motor is easily more than enough for what is needed. It has no problem moving the heft of this truck around or keeping up with traffic on the highways or interstates and currently I'm averaging 23 miles per gallon, on a motor that isn't even broken in yet. It is definitely not as quick as the V6 but I personally did not buy the truck for it's quick acceleration. I encourage would be buyers of these trucks to consider test driving the 2.5 before making a final decision. I was genuinely surprised and I am very happy with my truck.

      soundgardenman, mine is a two wheel drive. DanaH I agree, I have had this truck just over a month now and I have absolutely no regrets. The only thing I would change is getting the truck in crew cab with the 4 cylinder engine. Other than that it is a fantastic truck.

    I just bought a 2018 Chevy Colorado extended cab work truck with the standard 6-speed transmission with appearance and convenience package, and so far it's been an outstanding truck. Everybody that gets in it can't believe it's a work truck. I don't even like driving my full-size truck anymore because the Colorado was so easy to maneuver.

    I wonder how the I-4 would feel towing 1,000-1,200 lbs (jet ski + trailer) compared to the V6. It's below the I-4's max rating of 3500 but I'm curious how it would perform going up hills and getting onto freeway onramps. I was originally interested in only the V6 model but willing to at least consider the I-4 as a possibility now since I wouldn't be towing anything heavier. Getting over 20mpg's while towing would be awesome.

    i recently bought a used 1 owner 2.5l v4, on the 30th day of owning it a code popped up. p06de which can be either a sensor or debri in the oil pump. i called several locations and spoke with the technicians. i also have an odb2 reader. after getting some running specs on the vehicle i decided to clear the code 1 time and perform the tests. well after 500 miles later the error has yet to appear and psi and temps on point. still monitoring the situation. but all is good. code popped apparently for no real reason. also i have been monitoring the oil for any shiny particles with a bright light and thats good too.

    • @cakefaice
      @cakefaice 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      smokingspazz Unless you live in a backass state such as california, diesel is nowhere near $4.50. It shouldn't cost anymore than gas because diesel is just the leftover of manufactured gasoline. The main reason why america hasn't moved into diesel in cars because since they get way better gas mileage, people don't need to fill-up that often so it starves the government of the ridiculous gasoline tax. It's more for corporate greed.

      By shouldn't I mean it actually shouldn't be, but diesel tax remains very high across the country so you'd better make sure your diesel gets at least 30mpg+ to make up for the high prices. But unfortunately, it's way more than gas. Here in Nevada once gas gets back up to $3.98 diesel would be $4.14

    Ok guys but that's not a base model! That is an LT, it's got fog lights with OnStar, with the 8" Touch Screen and alloy wheels! When I went to buy mine, I drove a 4 cyl 4x4, Ext Cab, just to see how it was. I was pleasantly surprised at the power and getup and go. But thought the engine to be loud. Plus we planned on towing so when I tried the V6 I was sold! But in the Ext Cab you can get a Z71,4x4, with the 4 cyl! That comes loaded in the Z71! But that truck your testing is not a base! The base has no chrome trim, alloy wheels, fog lights and the 8" touch screen with OnStar! At the dealer I bought mine at, Quirk Chevrolet, I got a 5k discount! They actually had the base 6 spd manual truck on the lot ready to go for 17.5K!! A nice two wheel LT like the one you are testing ran for 21.5k! Loaded with every option you can get, it just had the 4 cyl! That by the way is only available in the Ext Cab!! But for some reason 4x4 is about $5,000 more!!! Mine was $30,500 out the door with the discount! That was for an ext Cab Z71,4x4, V6, with the 8" touch screen OnStar with Nav/Bose and the factory Tow Package! In all black! We love it had it for a year and 14,000 miles without any problems! We get 18 city and 28 hyw at the speed limits with cruise control! Towing our travel trailer, that's 4,000 lbs. full of water and food/supply's we get an average of 14 mpg! That's at 9,870 CGVW off a Cat Scale!! On a trip from Massachusetts to Key West down the east coast of Fla. Up the west coast of Fla to the Smoky Mountains of Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge back home up rt 81 through Va and PA to Mass. that's with the trailer and all our stuff for three weeks and my 560 lbs. 1200 Sportster in the bed! That the truck handled very well! Plenty of power in the hills! More than my cousin in his new Tacoma! Plus better fuel mileage at within 200 lbs LESS weight than us!! Towing a very similar trailer as ours! Only it was a toy hauler, cause he could not put his Sportster in his bed! Cause it's too short! By the end of the year I will be trading it in for a ZR2 diesel!! I know I probably won't be able to carry the motorcycle and tow my trailer, due to the lower weight and towing capacity! I will however try towing my cousins trailer loaded with his bike, just to see how it does it that way. Cause you really need to be able to take the bike with us!! Anyway sorry for the long tale. But have fun and stay safe👍

But with traction/stability control these days, the manual with the open diff might do ok. I had a friend who bought a Tundra right after they went to a true full size pickup, 2wd, up in Northern Vermont, and he had a button on the dash that engaged traction control and (not completely sure about this) I think locked the diff, and with winter tires, it was absolutely fantastic in the snow.

Also the package havr changed some where you can get a cheep appearance package on the work truck so it looks even better.

    I here the 2.5 motor is pretty reliable. But why don't they put the 2.7 big truck motor in the Z71 with a six speed manual.

      The 3rd gen Colorado, due in 2023, will likely get the 2.7 turbo 4-cylinder.

    looks like I'm going to keep 05 tundra regular cab 2wd long bed 4.0L v6 6spd manual trans for a long time. Sure, I would like the extra mpg a new rig offers but I don't want a truck that's more like a sedan in disguise.

      You don't know what your missing. Crew cab is nice.and the truck is up to date and solid. Mine can tow 7,000 lbs. Tundra is old and not as nice

    Got the price down for the base model 2014 extended cab brand new had 5 miles on it , 15,000 cash in hand, it is possible to get the price down... I thought 22,000 sticker was an absolute joke, and a rip off for the base model, just my opinion .

    Is it just me or does it seem a bit excessive for the 4x4 Canyon to command a $7,000 premium over the 4x2? I know it's a premium feature and all but it puts the 4x4 crew cab long bed Canyon at a base price of $35,000. Pretty insane for someone who just wants a smaller truck.

    That is ford argument that killed the ranger. The cost to build the small truck is the same as a full size. The little dif in materials doesn't make a diff . The retirement plan ,health ins, factory overhead, gov taxes and energy costs stay the same.

    This is not a base model, it's an LT, which can be optioned up to a higher price than the Z71. This one is optioned with the Convenience Package, which includes foglamps. This is a lame review, imo. I mean, I'm glad they like it and all, but...

    What’s with you guys? You know better! That’s NOT a base truck! That’s actually an LT, with a 4 cyl! That is NOT THE BASE MODEL ROMAN! It has the 17” alloy wheels! It has what looks like the 8” Chevy MyLink System with OnStar and 4G LTE WIFI! THAT DOES NOT CONE IN A BASE TRUCK!! Oh yea power windows! There is actually a shorter list of the options it does not have! Like fog lights! Realistically Nathan you can buy a base model, a real base model for 18k in the Boston area! There are what is called a W/T Custom now that you can buy for 21k, that is just about like the one you guys have except no chrome trim under the side windows. Better luck next time guys.

    How should you know whether to go v6 or v4. I'd like the v6 for the power, not sure whether I'd need it. However I don't want to be laughed at with a v4. Is a v4 truck worth getting at all?

    • @iDrive4fun93
      @iDrive4fun93 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the 4 cylinder is worth considering, in fact, I like it more than the V6. I don't pay any mind to what people think of me though, cause its my life, and I am gonna do and like as I please. If someone laughs at you, tell him its my truck, my choice, that you don't care what he thinks, and be on your way. It's neither here nor there what he thinks about you or your decision. He probably won't bother you, or anyone else for that matter, after that. I personally think that the 2.5 or the diesel are the better engines for this truck. In the end, do what you want, drive all 3, and if you like the V6, hey, that's perfect, its your truck, or if you opt for the either of the 4 cylinders, thats perfect too, its your choice, and whatever makes you happiest at the end of the day is most important.

    anyone who actually drives a truck for physical labor wont want leather. a sweaty dirty guy doesn't want to stick to a leather seat. Also am I the only one that thinks that ford shouldn't have gotten rid of the ranger and force people to get the v6 150 as the only alternative.
