Oh man. I used a heating pad on my low back for ten minutes this morning. I could not straighten up out of my chair. It got so much worse. So I came to good old YT to get some knowledge. Ice it will be for a few days. My strain is one week old. So depressing. It’s giving me lots of compassion for people who have chronic back pain.
I developed some lower back pain a week ago , and initially used Ice , my problem was I transitioned to heat too quickly . I went back to ice again and am now feeling better , will continue with the ice for a few days in 20 minute increments an hour or so apart , Thank you for this post .
I learned a few things but not as much as I hoped. You talked about the classic injury protocol of "ice in the 1st 72 hours and heat thereafter". Well, that doesn't help me because I have chronic lower back arthritis (disk degenerative disease). For months (maybe years), I applied heat to my lower back and it never got any better and maybe worsened. I went to a chiropractor and he said I should be icing my lower back. As soon as I starting icing, it was a godsend. Significant and quick improvement. Because my problem is inflammation, I NEVER use heat on my lower back. The only time I consider using heat is when I have my regularly scheduled SEVERE back spasms a few times a year. With a spasm, I NEVER use ice but instead focus on stretching. What I consider a good general strategy is heat in the morning to loosen things up and get the blood moving and ice at night to deal with the wear and tear of the day. It has worked quite well for me. Unfortunately, there is nothing concrete you can take from my approach. In other words, it doesn't really make any sense. But it works for me.
The ice therapy is working for me on lower to middle back muscle pain, when you initially hear using this treatment this it does not seem correct but boy does it work.
24hrs in to a horribly painful L4/5 relapse and tearing off a heat patch and turning off the electric heat pad.... Icing my second 20m/40m cycle and things are actually settling down.... Thank you so much
I sprained my lower back today while lifting weights. I came back to my room and put a heat pad on it and sleep for 2 hours. I just came to watch this video and realized I did everything I DIDN´T HAVE TO DO. No wonder I had more pain lol. Thanks for the video! Will definitely be applying ice for 20 minutes. I will let you know how that goes.
this video should be made mandatory view for patients with back problems. I prefer to know and see how I can really help work with my physio (a knowledgeable, patient and good problem solver) is a minimum must. ( will stay with you for a good deal longer than your hour and working to help you get better.) Thank you so much. 5*****

Im glad I clicked on your video. They've always told me to ice my back but never for how long. Thank you for letting us kniw that it's only 20 minutes or you can cause more pain then let rest for a hour or 2 and then you can place ice back again for another 20 minutes.👍
Thank you for this! I have ruptured discs and am so confused on how to go about relieving pain. It's so sharp and painful it takes my breath away. So I've learned...wait about 3-4 days before using heat?
I strained my back about a year ago pretty bad… 2 MRIs came back good no tears just strain of ligaments down the spine, my back tightness up and gets aggravated. if I sit for two long it gets stiff and applying heat helps. should I just use ice ?
RICE: Rest Ice Compression Elevation. Heat can help after the acute phase, but identifying muscle imbalances and training stabilizer muscles provide the best long term results.
I dont understand. Can you explain different type of pain and injury and how to treat them? You explained it too generally. Low back spasm, heat or cold? Muscle soreness after workout, heat or cold? etc.
I iced my back after i sprain my lower back yesterday but icing this morning made it worth. I had some mobility from applying heat and stretching yesterday. After icing, i could not get back up from the floor. Applying heat and stretching yesterday seem to work better for me even though it was less than 24 hours. I am wondering if icing is really intended for injuries with swelling. Thanks.
That’s so interesting!! I’m not sure either. Which is really better. I guess everyone’s body response differently. I have a strain. I used ice and heat I feel worse today. I might go with ice again.

Ok, I should be in the ice phase... I'm going to try this and see how it goes. The heat pad did allow me some relief from the stiffness but I want this to get better as fast as possible. Does anyone have an option on ice baths when you hurt your back really bad?
Hi I pulled my back yesterday and applied heat which I know now to be wrong as it did feel worst , I had a pillow between my legs last night to see if that would help and I woke up really stiff this morning, I have now put ice on it for 20 mins and that has released some of the pain should I take ibuprofen to? If its one and half month and same pain, you can still try icing if it feels very raw... But if its chronic, you can try heat. See which feels good after
Sir I'm feeling too much pain When i get up early in morning. I'm trying heat but pain also increases. My consultant Doctor said to me that your problem is lower lumber spine pain due to muscle spasm.
Use both at difrent times . Ice for 15 mins . You can heat after for longer but use cold and then hot then cold then cold and then cold agin then heat . Then heat. Then heat again then cold and cold and hot then cold then hot then hot then cold then hot then cold and cold and cold and cold and cold the. Heat . That's the thing no one ever tells you . Another trick is to use a 50/50 mix of heat and cold and mix it about intill you get a room temperature and apply it directly . This is the trick no one says

Great video
I'm facing lower back muscles pain due lifting weight.
Its one and half month ago what should i do? Heat or ice?
If its one and half month and same pain, you can still try icing if it feels very raw... But if its chronic, you can try heat. See which feels good after
Sir I'm feeling too much pain When i get up early in morning. I'm trying heat but pain also increases.
My consultant Doctor said to me that your problem is lower lumber spine pain due to muscle spasm.
@@abdulsaqib1975 did it ever get better man? Like did anything help you? Did you try physical therapy and resting
Hi how’s your back now? I have injured myself in the gym .
Hi, I missed applying ice the first 3 days, I still have acute pain. Do you still suggest using ice or just heat? Thanks.
I threw my back out last Saturday & I'm still in pain. I started using ice on Tues & heat. Ibuprofen too
Use both at difrent times .
@@pathart8854 I was doing the hot/ cold packs in between it’s been about almost 2 weeks for me.
Thanks doc
Today I jump from a 🌳, the slide. Fall on my butt and hurt my back, what to do.
Thank you . Great information .. Will follow your advise consciously
This is great info thanks. I’ve been dealing with pain in my lower back from scoliosis and scataica. It’s also been going down my right leg. I was using a heat pad at night but my back would be throbbing. I’m going try a ice pack. I’ve been using biofreeze during the day some. Lately it’s been making me burn and turning red on my skin and itching,
Dose it work for you?
Plz reply
The best thing for sciatica is to take activities in sports
It's been 1 year and 2 months since I injured myself it doesn't hurt so much I can walk but not so much my point is I am in the middle.
What procedure should I go with
1. Should I use ice
2. Or ice + hot water
3. Or only hot water
Start with Ice and see how it feels.
@@BackIntelligence onto what extent 15 to 20 min ?
