So i am afraid now to stretch or move. Will it get better? For how many weeks? Should I always take pain meds everyday so I can stretch? 😢
Hi there! It will get better but it could take some time. The disc has limited blood flow which impacts healing. When I work my patients and they say that I usually tell them to reduce the intensity of the stretch. I would not take medication just to stretch.
Thanks and awesome question. So the disk is not as vascularized as muscle. Because of the reduced blood flow healing takes a little bit longer if it’s truly disc pain. But I will tell you it is much more rare to have disc pain versus muscle. On average, they both recover very well.
Hey great video I hurt my back during deadlift months ago and stopped deadlifts and now I thought it had healed, but now the pain is back. If I try to bend over it hurts and as mentioned in video I do have pain in my right leg ( calf and hip). I've tried doing exercises for lower back but it still hurts afterwards. What should I do?
Hey! Thank you so much for commenting! If you have pain into your calf when you bend over. You have two options. 1. Consult a PT. spend the 150 bucks and learn exactly why and what to do to help it. 2. Work on stretching and healing the nerve with a video like this th-cam.com/video/K-d2Hxnt_oc/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/HeqAXgG2g3w/w-d-xo.html. Hope that helps!
Ive been doing cable rows and hyperextending my back and when i bend over then straighten back up i feel pain in lower back. You think thats disc or muscle injury? Its been hurting for months so i switched the exercise
Great question and hard to say exactly. Since it's been a while I would have to see the movement and feel your spine move. I would guess one or two visits from a physio would be helpful. I know that's not exactly what you were looking for but that's the best option
I suddenly started feeling severe lower back pain when trying to stand completely straight. The pain worsens the more I bend backward, improving from slouching forward. The pain is also much worse when lifting or standing from sitting. I feel almost zero back pain when sitting or laying down. The pain is very sharp and concentrated on my lower spine between my pelvic bones. I know rest is important however I also know not enough activity also weakens the supporting muscles. What do you think is causing my lower back pain? Does this sound more like muscle/tendon/ligament strain or disc related? What can I do to help it heal? What stretches or exercises help the most?
hi! hard to say since there can be many causes but it doesn't seem nerve so best bet is to stay moving and try some mobility work including back stretches and walking! Try some of these: th-cam.com/video/NcFFY7fSkBg/w-d-xo.html
This is good information. Sustained an injury 4 years ago while exercising that only affects my right side and has led to on-going SOB and GI issues (which have improved.) A slew of tests over 3 years telling me everything is normal although I've had high markers for inflammation. I stay active but have been reduced to walking over last 4 years - hard cardio days are gone. I continue with stretching and weights which only seem to aggravate lower back which eventually leads to shoulder pain and on occasion right hip and calf pain. More concerned now about right side pressure build-up I have in my neck and right ear particularly first thing in the morning with sinus congestion. In your opinion can a bad spot in the spine lead to such complications or could a deep, unhealed muscle injury be the culprit?
How interesting and thanks for sharing. The back, hip and leg pain tend to respond well to sciatica type treatments including nerve glides. The other symptoms are interesting and are most likely unrelated to back pain. The lower grade inflammation may indicate a microbiome assessment with a functional med provider
Hi, thank you so much for the video, it gives me important knowledge. I am from Indonesia. I am diagnosed HNP L3-4, L4-5 and L5-S1. MRI result stated no deformation or DDD, no listesis, no spondilosis. I have no sciatica pain, my legs are all ok. It feels sometimes burning there at the lumbar but that's not the main that I'm suffering. I'm having this muscle spasm or muscle sore around waist and back area (sometimes left, or right or both at the same time). It's getting better gradually since I do exercise for LBP but not significantly dissappear yet, it's been some months since 26 July 2024 I had it at the first time (sudden waist cramp while I was sleeping). I was wondering is it related to my HNP or got nothing to do and it is separately my muscle problem. Thank you so much if you respond this...
Thanks for reaching out! It sound unrelated in my opinion. Or if it is, it's loosely related. The muscle spams and soreness respond very well to exercise. I would continue doing what you are doing and let your body heal.
It was back day in the gym last week for me, I think I used the wrong form. Later on I had a looong shift so I was standing for most of the time. When I got home I felt my back getting stiffer and stiffer, I took a hot bath and went to sleep. Next day I had the worst imaginable pain in my lower back I could barely get up. Over the day though the pain got better, but this is what it’s been for the last week, I have extreme stiffens and pain in my left lower back in the morning which makes it so hard for me to get up and get going but through the day the pain goes away. I have booked a session with my physio, but I am still worried about what might be causing this pain. Last year i got a disc injury which healed with regular physio. Hope that it isn’t the same this time out
I am 15 years old and 3 days ago I hurt my back while doing calf raises on a squat rack and accidentally (in a way) dropped the weight on my back. In the moment of the injury, my voice faintly came out and it was mildly hard to breathe and I had to brace myself and sit down for a little bit. After a day I figured that the pain and discomfort was focused around my mid back and I did not experience the pain radiating anywhere else and my chest felt slightly tighter. But I still was not sure if it was nervous or muscular as I could still feel my spine hurting if I puffed up my chest. I’ve been taking hot water shower, Tylenol, and walking from time to time to relieve my pain temporarily but the discomfort didn’t fully go away. And to my surprise, it was easier on my body to walk but sitting down or laying down on my bed caused the discomfort again. I was so worried for the past few days that it might be something serious and contemplated hard whether or not I should visit the doctor. Currently, I am believing and hoping it is a muscle issue.
Oh thanks for sharing. It sounds like your body is healing up but you should watch out for red flags: th-cam.com/users/shorts9e6MJzqiQcc If you noticed really weird symptoms then you should have it checked out. Also, consult your parents as well. A quick visit to the urgent care or Primary care doctor can ease your mind as well
I hurt my lower back doing squats with the bar sitting lower than the optimal form. doctor told me it was muscle imblanace, xray showed 20% reduction in disc space. bending down with l5s1 causes pain for the following days, hamstrings are tight. pain has improved a little but the mobility has not. had this issue for over a year. do you think it's disc or muscle?
Sounds like muscle and mobility issues. I wouldn’t be worried about significant disc involvement. Reduction in disc height can start in your 20’s and 30’s
Hi doctor…. I Injured my lower back at work while lifting heavy object ( with bad posture ) . I am working as a steel fixer for 4 years. I went to doc and psychiatrist, and i did xray, it shows my mild disc narrowing at l5-s1. So psychiatrist said it may be disc bulge. I am also doing some light stretching/ exercise…..Its been 6 weeks now, and pain is a bit down. It stills hurts while bending, ..but i dont feel much pain when i bend down with a good posture …and my pain dont go from lower back to leg. It just stays on lower back, sometimes buttock.. i am not sure if its disc bulge or muscle strain .
Great observations. in my experience with patients that sound like you, the pain is not often related to a bulge. Do you want to regain mobility with specific mobility exercises for your spine. A good Physio can tell you what to do. disc narrowing and disc bulges can start in your late 20s. It’s hard to say if those are truly causing the discomfort. In the end it’s about treating the symptoms.
I have immense discomfort (i would call it very high fever & feeling of spasms& no sleep all night from my left side on the back of my body)& also neck stiffness& and nerve pain. If i twist my head alot i might snap it. Lol. But seriously,i my heart beats fast and like a machine non stop😢.
Hi doctor i am 19 years old it is since 1 month i have back pain I was at gym i lifted heavy weight then i feel tight and spasm in my lower back i was really worried about disc damage then i went to doctor i got an MRI . MRI is alright, MRI shows that disc are ok no problem is there i have pain when stand up and sit just this two i feel tight in my back please help me i don’t have in my legs , me legs are just burning
Hey glad you got it checked out and it seems that you need time, gentle exercise and mobility work. In patients like yourself I often suggest that you walk every day, stretch, give it some time. Your young and you will bounce back. Also, it doesn't mean your more likely to have back pain for the rest of your life. This stuff just happens.
I am 29 years old, and 5 days ago, I went cliff diving. I somehow slightly over arched my back when I dove. Although it was a hand and head-first dive, it still hit my back (30-ft jump) it wasn't that painful at first, but it started hurting afterward. It hurt when I bend backwards and long sitting. I'm wondering if its a disc buldging, herniation, or normal sprain.
Good questions! Most likely it’s nothing but an x-ray from urgent care or a primary care provider could rule out a fracture. It’s unlikely to be a fracture if you’re able to walk and complete your daily activities without limitation. When in doubt just get it looked at by a PT or physician.
@@TheResilientSpine thank you, appreciate the reply. I can pretty much move normally, except when I twist the wrong way it really hurts. Thank you tho
I saw this video since I started to find out what is the reason behind my lower back pain, and I hope you can help me I’m still suffering for a lower back pain for 4 months, I don’t know what it is but it’s sharp at the middle of my lower back, also everytime I bend forward and backward I can feel it too, and every time I twist my right hip I can also feel it, but when I’m laying on the bed I don’t feel any pain at all To be honest I’m having a discomfort feeling everytime I’m standing long time period of my work because of my lower back
Great questions! If you are not having any calf or foot pain the chance of significant nerve involvement is low. It sounds mechanical and related to movement which is good. I would be exercising and completing mobility exercises of your back. Maybe something like this: th-cam.com/video/rwKtpNYhFb8/w-d-xo.html
i literally sat down, stood up and had a pain which made it tough to walk for the next few days. getting out of bed was the worse. ive been doing stretching exercises that i saw online and sometimes for a few seconds , my glutes and legs would feel a little numb / tingly. its been 2 weeks now and it doesnt hurt when i walk but my lower back is still sore esp when i sit down. i still cant tell if its a disc or muscle injury. should i see a doctor or a physio? or just stick to OTC meds?
This is a very typical recovery timeline for a muscle injury. You are recovering and that is great! I would guess in a couple more weeks you will be 100%. A physio will help you dial in your stretching and give you some advice for prevention!
What if its just left side of lower back pain only when sitting or bending forward and bending backwards? I can jump and walk with no pain but bending forward and backwards is painful and tight.
Interesting. Jumping without any pain but bending over and backward with pain. It's always so crazy how everybody is slightly different. It could be purely muscle or it could be ligamentous or disc. It's really hard to say. That said, No pain into the glutes, hamstrings, or calf is a good thing because you know it can't be a serious nerve injury. I would rely on time, mobility work, and strengthening depending on how long it's been going on. Hope that helps! A physio consult would be best.
It's been 2 weeks or so. Ya its strange. Bending forward hurts the worse but I can still feel pain bending backwards and bending to the side. But nothing down the legs. Also it doesn't hurt to the touch. So I can push on the area and no pain. Just and bending
I have mid back pain right at the left of my spinal cord and I am suffering from it for a month but whenever I try to do some stretching exercises it becomes worse but push-ups and running gives relief and whenever I, taking it a sprain, try to crack the joints the cracking sound comes but don't help much.... Please help me 🙏..
Thanks for commenting. That’s hard to say confidently. Generally, listening to your body and improving strength and mobility will go a long way. Popping the joint may not be the answer. Back pain is so unique but my patients like yourself typically start there.
@@TheResilientSpineThe pain is maximum in the morning and I am just 18 but still haven't got any relief for 1 month so I am very worried whether I'll be all right or not ...
@@shivamtiwaryslp8422 in this case I may consult a physiotherapist or Primary care doc to get a hold of it. They would be able to take a closer look at it
Hi, Doc! Curious: Do any of your patients play sports (like tennis or basketball) with a symptomatic disc herniation? But when playing the sport, the sport (like tennis or basketball) doesn’t worsen pain? Or is that unlikely?
No that can happen! Angry nerves can do really well with movement. Playing sports really loosens things up. It can leave someone sore so some good stretching is recommend afterwords.
Yep, can absolutely happen. check out this video and see how it impacts your ability to bend over! th-cam.com/video/37rngW62L9w/w-d-xo.html Let me know what you think!
Hey doc, good info. I hurt my back in early Feb of this year lifting a heavy wrought iron table. I never had back problems before. I've been getting this stinging pain in my lower back since then. No radiation, numbness or tingling. Most of the time my back feels totally normally and I think it's slowly getting better. Should I be concerned about a slipped disc since it's been going on several months? Or can this just be a strain?
Thank you for this video, Very helpful. One or 3 vertebras on my lower back is bulging a bit out and it hurts when I press on it. I have this 2 years now. The pain feels stiff, is constant and wraps my lower back area. I had an x ray which showed basically nothing and they just let me go with no treatment. Should I be worried?
4 weeks ago I had what I think is an injury after doing barbell squat. Now when I bend over or slouch, I have pain on my lower back that prevents me from bending further. The pain is pretty localised so I don’t think it’s disc, do you have suggestion what I can do? it’s been 4 weeks
@@ivanreii it sounds pretty muscular to me! But really it’s hard to tell between bulging disc and muscular pain in the beginning. At four or five weeks out, you should be noticing significant improvement and I would work on fling base exercises such as child’s pose or prayer stretching progressing to Jefferson squats.
Could this be muscle pain if it is accompanied by a lateral shift? In most cases I’ve read about, a lateral shift is usually associated with a disc herniation. After a few days, the pain becomes much less intense, and the lateral shift is slightly reduced. My back only hurts when I move my hips in certain directions. The pain is located in the center of my lower back and doesn’t seem to radiate to my extremities. I have had muscle sprains in my back in the past, but nothing like this with a lateral shift.
Question i had a xray done and it said it was a lower back strain but i had pain on my ankle. Does a strain feel pain down ankle or is it a disc? Also the L5 s1 was showing xray strain
Good question! I am assuming they started at the same time. Your back and ankle discomfort. If so, you can test to see if they are related with the nerve glides you see in this video. They can be related and simple clinical test can help you figure that out! th-cam.com/video/37rngW62L9w/w-d-xo.html
I hurt my back deadlifting in the gym 3 days ago. I did feel a twinge, or spasm (maybe even pop) the moment it happened. It was actually not painful until a few hours later. Currently, the pain is persisting. I have discomfort when i stand up, especially after waking up. Actually, it is so painful that I can barely stand and I walk hunched over. However, a hot shower, OTC meds, and icing usually loosens up my back where I can walk normally again. Laying down and sitting downs alleviates my symptoms. Pain is centralized in lower back and is not radiating down any extremities. I do have some popping and cracking in my back though. I believe the underlying issue is a muscle sprain opposed to a disc related issue but I do not know for certain. Going to wait a full week before I go to a provider because I do feel like there is improvements.
Sounds like that is a classic spasm! I typically recommend heat but in the end, it's what ever feels better for your body. I am certain everyday will feel better for you!
Hey doc i just have a doubt i have pain in both sides of my lower back, whenever i wake up from lying down it just feels awfull down there. And some times during sleeping im feeling the pain on my lower back and also when bending forward to pick heavy things. Can u please help me figure out the reason for the pain
There are many structures that can cause pain in the lower back. When bending over a lot of things move to allow this to happen. I would say staying consistent with mobility work will help you feel better and move better. Check this out: th-cam.com/video/l9hf0rUsm5U/w-d-xo.html
HI there! Could be trigger points but also a common area of referred pain from the neck. A good PT could help you figure it out quickly. If it's really tender I would work on it with deep pressure.

Great question. For a better answer I would have a physio look at it. If that's not an option then I would explode mobility and stretching for the back and hips
I am 17 I went to reach a water bottle on the floor and threw my back.. it hurt like hell in the first 2 days, the following week it was better didn’t hurt when I walk, stand up, sit etc but because I ignored and went to gym play football and do whatever the starting of the second week the pain is back just like the first day or even worse.. I was taking anti inflammatories and medications but still after 3.5 weeks from the first day of pain the pain is still there.. some days the pain is very mild and the other very bad such that I just wanna stay in bed.. I am even more scared of when it will heal because the physiotherapy also isn’t helping and I am starting my college in less than 2 months
Thanks for commenting! Seems very muscular and it can take a few weeks for normal tissue healing. Listen to your body and walking is a great medicine! Tell your physio and let them know! there are other things to check as well to make sure it's muscular. Don't get too frustrate and trust your body.
But doctor.. it's been almost 4 weeks still I need to be very careful in everything I do.. I am very scared if this is happening at a young age I will be bed ridden at the age of 40.. and still there's very little to no improvement.. I am thinking to change my physio.. today my physio told the muscle spasm is gone but I still have very much pain while doing certain movements.. and she said it is probably because ur spine is weak or ur muscles are weak but the mri tells spine has no problem.. I am very scared of how much more time it will take to heal completely

@@danger 100% yes!! If you are over 30 there’s a 50% chance of having disc bulges without pain! It’s just a part of life. It’s more likely muscle and should respond well to strengthening and mobility exercises.
Interesting. In my experience if you have pain when you lie down try bending your knees and having your feet flat. If that helps, then it's often not disc. If you have pain into your glute or down your leg when you bring your knees to your chest, it can be related to the disc/nerve. Hope this helps!

I am actually putting out some core strengthening handouts soon for free! Make sure to opt in on my blog and it will be sent out to you this month!
It can be in that you can have an old bulging disc but have a recent muscle strain. And, if something big happens you can bulge a disc and strain your back at the same time. Often times, only one is really causing the pain you are feeling at that moment.
When you bent over to describe throwing out your back I was like oh yeah that's me. Also feels like I have a thick book strapped to my lower back.

Hope that it isn’t the same this time out
awesome that you have a physio appointment booked! It sounds very muscular and I would expect gradual recovery! This part isn't fun but it passes.
A quick visit to the urgent care or Primary care doctor can ease your mind as well
@@TheResilientSpine Will do doc, thank you so much for reaching out and helping me. God bless you
I hurt my lower back doing squats with the bar sitting lower than the optimal form. doctor told me it was muscle imblanace, xray showed 20% reduction in disc space. bending down with l5s1 causes pain for the following days, hamstrings are tight. pain has improved a little but the mobility has not. had this issue for over a year. do you think it's disc or muscle?
The best thing to do would be to chat to a PT or primary care.
@@TheResilientSpine thanks sir and after how many days the pain will be relieve totally i have walking every day
I am 29 years old, and 5 days ago, I went cliff diving.

I’m still suffering for a lower back pain for 4 months, I don’t know what it is but it’s sharp at the middle of my lower back, also everytime I bend forward and backward I can feel it too, and every time I twist my right hip I can also feel it, but when I’m laying on the bed I don’t feel any pain at all
To be honest I’m having a discomfort feeling everytime I’m standing long time period of my work because of my lower back
Great questions!
@@TheResilientSpine cool! thanks for ur reply! im glad u think its a muscle injury and not something more serious haha! great video by the way =)

@@MrDeanoraff That pattern is generally a good thing! Give it some time

Awesome! Glad you think so!

I get nerve pain in my legs and pain it the center of low back which is not sharp it's dull and only happen if i create an arch or lean forward
Yep, can absolutely happen. check out this video and see how it impacts your ability to bend over! th-cam.com/video/37rngW62L9w/w-d-xo.html Let me know what you think!
Hey what did you end up having. This is what I’m going through
Hey doc, good info.
Hey! thanks for the question! If I were you, I wouldn't worry about a thing! Just stretch and keep moving.
I wouldn't be worried. X-rays often show a lot but it doesn't mean a lot. Stiffness can be addressed with mobility work and simple exercises.
Thank you so much! @@TheResilientSpine
Yes it could be! Your body will typically avoid or shift away from the pain. Shifts can happen with muscle strains.
Do you have any videos on upper back/neck pain issues?
Hi! Check this one out! th-cam.com/video/y8Z9RglAbfQ/w-d-xo.html

Can it be both?
It can be in that you can have an old bulging disc but have a recent muscle strain. And, if something big happens you can bulge a disc and strain your back at the same time. Often times, only one is really causing the pain you are feeling at that moment.
can back muscle spasm type pain last for a year?
You can have somatic or achy, tight, and dull pain for a long time but spasms don’t like that long.
