Hi Mike, we used these on site in the UK, well done for getting it running, we ground a spanner down so it would fit better for top bleeding. We also used ear plugs and muffs, and really thick gloves when we used it otherwise you were deaf and had pins and needles in your hands in no time!

Audio is perfect on this one. Great update. It's nice to see that old workhorse back in service rather than scrapped like I'm sure it would have been had it not made it's way to you Mike.

Wow seems wasteful to scrap any air cooled diesel. Around here it's just parted out if the machine it was on is worn out

  • @regsparkes6507
    @regsparkes6507 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hatz also offered a small tube and cap into which the operator could place a cold weather starting wick. You un-screw this tube from the cylinder head area, insert a wick and light it, when it's smoldering, you screw this tube back into the head, and set the decompressor and crank. This 'wick' is designed to be lit with a cigarette lighter, and then when the wick is smoldering it aids in internal cylinder heat to ignite the injected fuel. By the way, the ash from the burnt wick is so fine that it is easily exhausted through the engine's exhaust port/muffler.
On the oil drain plug,.the reason why there is no extension pipe there to drain the oil in a less messy procedure, is because as it is a vibrating compactor that pipe could crack off from that vibration during operation,..and result in total loss of engine oil.

  • @regsparkes6507
    @regsparkes6507 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good to see that you 'saved' that engine Mike,..great video, and I was pleased that there doesn't seem to be any damage caused by the total lack of care that the engine did not receive.
Those are tough and durable engines, but they MUST have care and service as you pointed out.
Hatz diesel engines were the preferred small engine for most of our rental fleet, especially in the compaction equipment machines we rented and sold.

Nice! I bought a compactor to get rid of seeds in my driveway. Yours is the only vid that comes close to demonstrating that -- you seemed to want to avoid hurting them! I've tried weedkiller and burning with very limited success, and noticed that where the cars come in the gravel is pretty much weedfree.
But, regarding the engine. I have a Hatz E75 on an ancient dumper (Clowez), which starts by wrapping a cord around the pulley, decompressing, and pulling. Used to start first pull. And run very, very well. There was electrical equipment in place which seemed to have been given up on, and the guy who sold it just was happy to start with the cord. W ell, I was too smart for my own good: took the starter in to be recoiled new battery, etc., etC. €400, got a neighbour (ex-helicopter mechanic, so he said) to mount it. CRAAACK!! He couldn't align the starter. Took it into a heavy machinery guy who kept it FOR A YEAR before telling me it was an impossibility: there just wasn't the housing necessary to take the starter; and the electrical gubbins that was on the machine was not ex-factory but a half-arsed attempt to make it electric start. Hmmmf. Since the gearbox was full -- of water, the previous owner clearly wasn't too keen on maintenance, so I thought I'd give the machine a birthday. How about a new injector nozzle? Yeah, got that sitting in the workshop for another year, getting rusty. I noticed you bleeding the diesel pipe, and I had done that but thought I had done it badly because I thought I should have had a second person to tighten the nut as I turned the engine to get an air bubble-free stream of diesel coming out. Well you did it single-handed, and I thought the stream of diesel wasn't particularly solid (air-free) and tightening down that nut was SLOW because of how awkward the same thing was to get at!
Anyhoo -- thanks for the video! Will go watch part the first and any others you have done.

Great video, Is there small passage hole on cylinder head that you can screw open. If so it is place for "glow plug", almost like cigarette that you light up and after a while crank engine. Two Stroke oli is also perfect to add in Diesel fuel. Always dump some when filling tank. Todays low sulfur Diesel is very dry.

I would like to make a comment on the oil sump drain: given that the machine spends its life vibrating, an extension for the oil drain would stick out, say 6", and that length, however long, would shake violently, just sticking out in space. I think it would snap off in short order. As messy as the draining is, an extension just wouldn't work IMHO.

    Heij
I can tell You who put the oil plug there: this engine was used in a variety of applications, my dad had such in an old septic pump. So, to keep the engine as versatile as it goes the engineers made the oil sump flat and to keep the engine small the oil drain plug had to be there where You complained. To be fair, my dad had a Toro lawnmower with a briggs and Stratton engine and the same problem: The drain plug was unusable until he made a little channel to funnel away the oil. So, who´s to blame? The customer ;)
By the way, it is very pleasant watching an American fixing German stuff and that plate is as German as it gets. Bomag is the customer who bought Hatz engines to put in their tools, Bomag was fairly large in the 50´s to 70´s, i know about Bomag loaders- huge and heavy with Hanomag or Deutz diesels. Old girls with grunt :) Like Your ´59 Cat- nice vid ;)
This engine is older than us together and because of the plug it might be still factory. I´d save that!
    Greetings from Germany, Stay safe

10:00 that's the heat shield for cooling the nozzle of the injector, very important to change it for a new one each time you get the injector off, if not change, it will deform the nozzle and pintle cause by the excessive heat. Bosch type, like old Benz, Volk, DNOSD ***

I pretty much figured when it cracked the injector when you turned it over, it would start on the first round. You took care of compression and fuel before you wasted time and energy cranking for no reason.😁 I think that little diesel would be pretty cool on a little scooter of some sort, instead of wasting away on that blasted compactor (unless you really, really need a compactor!) 3200 rpm is probably as fast as you'd want to run it though, so you'd have to gear it accordingly. Heck you've already got a centrifugal clutch.. just add an appropriate sprocket and away you go!😉👍

It runs really well but they do need regular oil changes to have a long working life. Also some of the dust issues can be helped if the water tank isn't holed (due to corrosion) and pathways for the flow are not blocked it dribbles water down onto whatever substance or material you are trying to wacker down solid. The hardest part of using one is holding it back as they all walk away from you!

One of the best things to add to diesel is 2 stroke oil. It helps lubricity and doesn't leave ash depots like motor oil does when burnt.
There is a analysis of all kinds of different diesel additives out there on the internet and Walmart tcw3 2 stoke was one of the best. Marvel's was one of the worst for lubricity mixed in diesel fuel.
It was the only two stroke oil used in the test so I'm sure there's even better oils. On expensive things I use Amsoil synthetic 2-stroke.
I often add a little 2-stroke oil to my older gas engines fuel just for a little valve & cylinder lubrication since gasoline has no lubricity anymore

I think that's what the other tank is for, the yellow one.

you'll have to bend a feeler gauge just for the exhaust release. that's where multiple sets are nice take one set or more apart and use just for things like that
** i like cheap sets to bend up and abuse, you can also cut the width down and re-radius, BUT be sure to "mic" them for accuracy before using and after any torture lol

    Nice Video and well explained!
Btw: the german "A" in "Hatz" and "Bomag" sounds sounds like the english "U" in "cut" or "nut"
And the "O" in "Bomag" sounds more like the "O" in "bore"

Good job mike. I use to have a bmw D7 marine diesel engine that looks exactly the same as the Hatz engine but had trouble with starting it for the first time. When i crank the engine over as if I would start it it just blows white smoke out of the exhaust that's al. Tried a heat gun in the intake, nothing. Tried starting fluid, nothing. At the end of the day i just gave the engine away.

Another great interesting video. Keep em coming! Those compactors will really give you a workout, and then lifting them in and out of a truck is a job in it's-self. Did you mention the HP on that engine? I'm not a fan of that air filter it came with, I'd change it to something that would filter better.

For the diesel engine "Hatz ES75-171J", is there a complete overhaul video?
    How to completely rebuild it?
Where can I find parts for it?
Maybe you can make a video about it?

Do you know what that tool you used to hold the stops to weld/grind them is called? I thought it was a "toe clamp" but it's not. Would really prefer that to my jank vice grip solutions. :)
