Damn nice job on that panel. A couple of suggestions for you, don't use those stick on wire holders, I have seen plenty of those things fall off in a few years. For even better wire labels slide a piece of clear heat shrink over them. A lot more work goes into making a panel like that, than most people realize, hope you charged the guy enough.

That's a really fun job! You made that control box look like something off the showroom floor! Those wire number sleeves are great. I used to do a lot of retrofits in the Oil/Gas/Power Gen field on industrial gas turbines and those things made life so much easier. Write-on/wrap around labels are PITA! ;)

I've seen those engines in tractors and construction equipment. You can hand crank those if you have to I've done it on a ID9 tractor. To make it easier to hand crank the old timers would switch it back to run on gas before they shut it down to clear any trace of diesel out of the cylinders. they shut the gas off and let it die so there's none left in the carburetor. A lot of antique equipment collectors would love to get their hands on that engine. A good running low hour engine like that is hard to come by.

Thank you from across the pond. The days of quality are over - unless you buy old or pay for it. Gardener diesels powered many lighthouses, etc. and still do. Unfortunately the 'greenies' and cheap inports caused Gardener to close. That generator may be old but those reading this will be long gone before that old lady dies. You did a very nice job, I'd buy you a pint any day.

Instead of getting one of those brass plaque engravers, get a simple vinyl printer (aka cricut- your wife would love having it for crafts) then apply that to your raw brass stock, drip in acid, the acid will remove a thin amount of the exposed brass, and the vinyl will protect what you want to see. Old time look, easy to do and 100% customizable

I wouldn't say that panel was messy, though I'd definitely call it "busy". We have here a commercially built control panel, and all of the wiring is white - every single wire is plain white. The only way to know what you're looking at is to don your reading glasses and examine those tiny little yellow sleeves, and hope they're not faded, blanched or buckled with age.
That's a very nice job you've made there! Then how about that engine? Isn't it a beauty. It sounds absolutely spot on. You can probably get a 15kW generator in a frame on wheels these days, but this will outlive them all

Nice old genset. I pity the guy who has to maintain it with all the "stuff" around it! My last job of 17 years was building panels of all sizes. We used blue for common, brown for 24v, black for "signals", yellow for AC and red for fire. We used the Panduit Panther LS8 for labeling wires and terminals. Very nice work on the panel! Nice generator upgrade!

You are correct, the US Army & US Army Air Force purchases a bunch of those gen-sets during WW11. As a matter of fact the USAF was still using them during the Korean War. I was a ground power tech in the USAF between 1951 &1955 and had a lot of WW11 equipment in the Far East. In Japan, we had to use generators for US made equipment because the local power on our USAF bases had local 100V 50Htz power.

great video , I love getting older machines working and used . I find the older stuff lasts longer , built better , and is more serviceable that modern models . I find things are built too cheap and very little quality . The items are not priced very low for what you are getting , considering that even lawn mowers that are 40 years old are still around and running . that says something as to the quality and design of engines . thanks for taking the time .

I cannot believe the oil pressure switch, I would almost guarantee it can't be correct. I would also want some temperature gauge checking. I have seen old IH tractors, MD, with the same sort of start on gas and run on diesel. I know there were UD 9 power units used to power irrigation equipment. Mike, Excellent video (as always). Nice job keeping this old motor/generator set working!
From the Wisconsin Historical Society -- Serial Number List -- Milwaukee Works -- 1905 - 1963 -- page 183, I would date this as being built in late February or early March 1944. Power Units are listed in the bottom half of the page. This unit was built during the height of WWII in Milwaukee with an IHC fuel injector pump (not a Bosch pump).
I wish I could post the link where this information is captured, but links apparently can't be posted.
BTW: This is the same engine as the WD-9 tractor. 335 cu in (5.5L). Go to Tractor Data for more info.

Very nice panel over here in uk I would have still used the exciter with it wired to the main field and fitted the voltage reg to the exciter field so the voltage reg would control a smaller current to keep the heat down. I did a lot of these in the 70s coal miners strike and the 3 day week. Every one found old second world war gensets from anywhere. Some had old carbon pile regulators and some had rotary ones. High point in my working life and often wonder what happened to them.
