Thank you for clarifying the difference between burnout and depression. It's hard for those of us that have a lot of depression to tell when there is a change because we just accept feeling shitty.
Its frustrating that this “executive dysfunction” isn’t its own diagnosis. I know it also falls under the ADHD umbrella, but that doesn’t really pinpoint it either. I feel bad it took you so long to get a diagnosis, but that’s the nature of it. The burnout aspect is not as recognized. I relate to your story a lot. For me depression is different than burnout in that I struggle to motivate myself even with special interests. I’m literally just too tired to focus. About all I can do is browse youtube and get lead down lots of dark rabbit holes.
Clearly you're going through some very difficult life situations at the moment and to feel depressed in such circumstances is unsurprising. However for some people depression is a long-term problem and exists even without the desperate situations that crop up for everyone at some time. it's unsurprising if many autistic people are depressed because they have to deal with more challenges than most. I agree that it's really unhelpful when anyone tells a depressed person that they should be glad because other people in the world face worse problems. Our problems are our problems and telling us that others are worse off is no consolation. It's also wrong to guilt-trip depressed people into not talking about their problems because they "should be thankful for what they've got". Expressing unhappiness is like expressing pain and is something that sometimes has to be done. I hope your current difficulties pass but it's important to be able to talk about them.
I do think that you get the whole perspective thing. Listen - just because there are people out there having it worse than you doesn't mean that your feelings aren't valid. If anyone says that to you, just because there are people who have it worse than you, "you are not allowed to feel the way you do," you should tell them that your feelings are valid no matter what the situation out there might be. This isn't about other people; it's about you! I don't believe that a therapist telling you about starving kids in other countries is a helpful thing to say. It seems pretty condescending, to be honest. I hope you're feeling a little bit better since this video was posted. I love watching your videos, and it's nice knowing that there are other autistic people on the internet who I can "turn to" when I need to feel less alone. Wishing you a fantastic day! 🥰
“Have it worse” is meaningless dogshit because depression isn’t always caused by “having a bad life”. Depression is horrible all by itself. It doesn’t need to be justified by “reasons” any more than cancer does. Its good that people are more open to talking about it, but its frustrating how people constantly don’t get it and trivialize what it really is.

Everything you’re saying makes total sense. Again, sending love. Thank you for being so open and honest when it’s tough. ❤️
