@Exercise For Health - I just stumbled upon this video from TH-cam recommendations, and I can’t thank enough. This is a brilliant video. I’m 35 years old, and since 4 years on a hypertension medication. My BP is lingering in the 125/ 88-90 zone with a low dose medicine. I am very keen on muscle building, and enjoyed strength training. However, my doctor had advised me to stay away from the gym. Could you please suggest or make a video demonstrating a routine for strength training exercises which is safe and also helps in toning the body. I’d really appreciate your advice.
Great! I'm slightly limited with what I can show on this channel as I have no gym with weights equipment of my own. I have managed to use a public gym with their permission on the odd occasion for 5 minutes when it's about to close. I'm hoping that I can offer something like this in the future as I have more of a strength training background than a cardio/ endurance based one. I have done some bodyweight strength exercise routines such as the TRX workout here: th-cam.com/video/6J1besHI9As/w-d-xo.html which should be OK for you. Watch this space!!
Ask your doctor why not the gym? Many study shows it's lower blood pressure, it may raise it temporary like any other exercise, but overall it helps reduce blood pressure
Great information I have blood pressure issues and I’m planning on going back to the gym. This will help to keep me safe thanks. I haven’t had a drink in a month and haven’t had to take blood pressure medication in a week. I do walk 4 times a week at least 45 minutes. Thanks for the info.
Just checking in again. I thought I was in good shape for 80, but these exercises get me just as winded as my HIIT workout. To be honest, some of the fast versions I can't keep up with and have to do the slower versions. Much of it is also my balance not being what it used to be. Anyway I'm also going through your other videos since I also have coronary artery disease. I'm keeping a heart healthy diet, but I find not many doctors agree with it. I try to engage them in a discussion but they don't want to take the time...they just want me to do what they tell me, and to not ask any questions. Thanks again.

Thanks for this great video. I'm experiencing persisting high blood pressure for the last two weeks. I have noticed this after overhead bench pressing with more weights I could handle and forcing myself to valsalva manoeuvre. Now I try to reduce it by abstaining from the gym and following a healthier diet before seeking medical advice...
Iam very glad that I found your video. Thanks so much for your explanation and suggestions. I got HP diagnos recently and has not start to take any medicine yet. The BP could reach 165/90 in tve morning but back to 135/80 in the evening. My question is how I should do with my running. I normally run two/three times each week, total mileage about 40-50km. I would run half marathon twice a year and train for that. I guess I can still run, but do I need to reduce intensity or mileage?
Thanks very imformitive especially tip about dont lift the weight above your head as is the bit about isometric exercise is intresting but unfortunately youtube is full of the oppisite advice saying isometric lowers blood pressure this just confusing

Thank you for the tips on avoiding the Valsalva through exhaling. I've been diagnosed with a tiny pseudo-aneurysm in a vertebral artery and have been advised to avoid the gym because of the risks that come with valsalva (the aneurysm might burst). Just discovered your chanel it is really lnformative and easy to understand, i am 72 male and have high blood pressure i walk for one hour before breakfast every day but my pressure stays high even after rest, my problem is i cannot take my pressure even at home as it stresses me and forces it higher have to take strong meds but the after affects are not good, any tips? great video, Thanks. Peter Guardamar Spain.
Sounds like you have white coat syndrome which is very common where anxiety of having B/P taken actually increases it. It might be good to try taking it 3 times a day: when you get up, in the middle of the day, and when you go to bed, and record the readings every day for a couple of weeks, so you can see any fluctuations. Your B/P will go up a bit during and shortly after exercise, but it will begin to drop again, so maybe try it about 2 hours after your morning walk and see what you get. Great that you're staying active though and great to hear from someone in Spain!
Very interesting. Glad I found this channel. Haven't heard any recommendations for exercising that tells you what not to do. I will try lowering my blood pressure using these tips.

at 64 i just started on a blood pressure medicine (a diuretic). im muscular build and normal weight and have been weight training practically my whole life and i also ride bicycle daily. my blood pressure was high in the morning and normal in the evening. i hated to have to start this bp med and kept delaying it, but decided to take my doctor's advice.
That's probably a wise decision, and think of the medication as another way (like your exercise) to reduce the risk for other health problems in the future.
I am so glad I have found yr channel! I'm 55, just about to have a total rh hip replacement too, with high BP and on meds for that . Getting a bit active again is going to be my best thing.....mainly just want to be walking and doing the right stuff :)
Lying down with legs elevated is used in the treatment for shock to allow blood to go back to the heart easier, so by definition, yes it will increase blood pressure due to the venous return, but not in a bad way if your heart rate isn't elevated and it will only be temporary. I wouldn't recommend someone with high B/P to lie down during intense exercise though.
This was a masterclass, thanks! I was looking for this iinformation for a client and found it veeery useful. I subscribed as well! Keep pumping the good videos 💪

I was under the impression that compound exercises using more muscles at once raised blood pressure more than isolated exercises only working one muscle
Glad I found this. I developed severe pots a few years ago. Since then can't stand without my BP slowly rising and rising while sat up and I'd like to start being more active again to rebuild my vascular stamina. I've noticed some movements I can't do because my BP rises too high as you mentioned planks and stuff. This video helped me figure out the mechanics and the risks alongside certain movements. I'll be mentally referring back to this video for a while. Hopefully I'll recover faster from now on. Thank you for this :)! The lifting above the head and the lateral raises were really helpful I was wondering abt that. Also focusing on multiple muscles and focus on moving blood pump to different regions. Wow! Never thought about that but honestly cant wait to try it and see if it helps this next week. Thank you!
I've developed mild POTS after covid. I can feel/hear my pulse raising when I get up from bed or even from sitting to walking to another room . Once I am moving around for a bit, I'm not aware of my pulse unless I over-exert. Have you received any treatment for POTS?
Sorry for my adhd comments on every single video it proably seems like lol! This helps me a lot, both knowing what to try to avoid as well as why. I have to go on a flight next week for a medical thing and am glad I am small and didn't pack heavy for my carry on, I won't feel so bad if I get someone to help me with my suitcase...I suppose I could use a giant purse to carry everything but I just bought the suitcase...I'm also diabetic, I didn't realize that made the BP issue even worse; like I knew it was a huge factor in BP but didn't realize it made the lower numbers worse, I didn't realize why some didn't seem like it was that great that I got it down from the 140/90...but with meds my BP is down to the low 100s most of the time...
Thanks may the lord bless you. I like it because after offering such a great video, you have laboured to answer every question here. 😍🥰🥰. May the lord bless everyone, heal the sick and make many more people view this video

I followed you yesterday morning to work on my BP but after the exercise I felt heart congestion and also felt like falling, could it be that I over did it or I did it incorrectly. Please advise me I don't want to base on high blood pressure drugs. Thanks
I can't thank you enough for making this video, I've been struggling with this for a very long time, I even had to quit exercising at all to let my body recover figure out what I was doing wrong, and now I'm skinny fat. Thanks again
You can still do split routines, but working more muscles in a workout is better as it doesn't spike the blood pressure as high while exercising. Check out my video on 23rd January 2023 for what I did in the gym to reduce my blood pressure.

Thanks for this. Pandemic, stress & heredity brought on HBP, now I’m off meds due to side effects, just water pills, working holistic approach. Exhale on exertion, yes, good info., thanks for this.. alternate upper lower good too. I can’t seem to beat this low energy, age related/menopause.. relaxation techniques are also good to lower HBP, for eg. lay down for a few mins., brings BP down. Deep slow breathing is good too. Take care all.
Hello there. Thank you for this very informative video. I have 2 questions: 1. Is HIIT workout good for someone with high blood pressure? 2. Is WEIGHT TRAINING or RESISTANCE TRAINING good for someone with high blood pressure? Thank you in advance.
HIIT can be OK, but the risk is higher to your health as the intensity increases. Weight training is fine, but again, the higher the intensity the more risk to your health.
Very clearly laid out, simple, logical, to the point. Well done, chap! I’d imagine if I fluctuate between normal and Stage 1 hypertension, then I’d be best off taking a reading beforehand. Thank you for the excellent info!
Glad it was helpful. Yes B/P fluctuates all the time, and you can get different readings within the space of 5 minutes, but look for what is average over a period of time to get an idea of whether it is Stage 1 or not.
@@ExerciseForHealth Right on, that makes sense. Although generally speaking, knowing my other factors such as my cholesterol, diet, recovering from smoking and alcohol overconsumption (2+ years ago) and elevated stress from past traumas, I definitely fall more on the stage 1 side of things even when given time to rest, although I can achieve a squeaky clean 120/80 result at times. Good to know the numbers to be weary at and as well as how to handle exercises accordingly. Thank you once again!
Im 25 years old and have been taking medication for to reduce blood pressure for 4 years now. I used to be an athlete and im well built too and not overweight. I weigh around 178-180lbs and im 5'11. My resting bp has been around 130/80. Recently ive joined a gym because of the fact i want to do strength training and reach my natural limit. With this bp would it be wise to pursue strength training if i warmup before my heavy lifting and cool down as well?
Im a 50yr old heathly powerlifter, now Strongman. Ive been training Strongman for 3 years no problems. Had a gym accident maybe a concussion, got neck adjusted, next day got dizzy sitting down after a set of warmups for logpress. Tested BP it was high. Dr put me on meds my labs came back ok, EKG ok. Doesn't know why I have high BP. Im just walking laps..my diet is good...cant lift weights until BP comes Wow...this sucks . going to see a Naturalpath Dr
Do you have a healthy routine for at home exercisers? I'm 76, covid long hauler, who has jogged and exercised for years and eat very low carb, just a bit overweight but strong and flexible. I seem to have POTS now, some lung ache way before being out of breath, and have had 2 high bp reading in offices - at home systolics range 116-150. Both of my calesthenic routines include isometrics, isolation, and over the head moves, so thanks for those tips. God bless ❤🙏❤
I have done a number of exercise videos you can follow. Take a look at the playlist here (most of which will be suitable for your health conditions): th-cam.com/play/PLf9i8qFtMBBK1VBEA-IlSw7VrXxrvxHUF.html
Brilliant video. I learnt that I am doing all the wrong exercises given my high BP. But rather then giving me an excuse to give up on exercises you gave me an alternative more beneficial one. BTW I'm surprised that exercises only reduces the pressure by 5 to 10 Mercury. I had hoped it would have been much more
I really appreciate this video. I’m 28, got high blood pressure after having my baby 3 years ago. I’m on one medication daily and have an average of 120/80 on medication. I have been trying out my local yoga studio and they do hot yoga. Is doing this a bad idea? I tried it once and didn’t have an issue but I don’t want to do more harm to my body than good.
It should be OK. The heat/ humidity in the room may cause your B/P to drop, so if you're going from a very warm and humid environment to a cold one, this can spike the B/P but only in the short term (a bit like dipping into a cold plunge pool or ice bath). Just make sure you stay warm when you leave the class to allow your body temperature to come down gradually so the blood pressure gradually stabilises.
You're welcome. Be sure to check out more up to date information in our blood pressure playlist here: th-cam.com/play/PLf9i8qFtMBBI9YPPSqbqzFOOYa45N_pPc.html
Would you say this is how someone with hypertension will permanently be looking to workout? Or do you think a person can move back into their previous routines?
The tips in this video is just a guide. People can effectively do what they want, and in many cases, if their blood pressure resumes to normal, they're no further restrictions unless they have other associated conditions. However, if this helps I've done a video on the risk with high B/P for the top 10 exercises here: th-cam.com/video/OHVdYOggcco/w-d-xo.html
Great practical advice - thank you. You mentioned that holding your breath is potentially dangerous. Does this mean Wim Hof style breathing should be avoided?
No, it's only holding your breath during strenuous activity (causing the valsalva manoeuvre) that pushes B/P up. Generally various breathing techniques when you are relaxed are OK.
So I'm on Blood Pressure medication and my Blood pressure is usually 140's/90's... I'm wondering is it okay to exercise? I'm going to ask my Doctor as well... I don't drink soda, caffeine, coffee, alcohol, etc...only water, decaffeinated green tea, and sometimes 100% kiwi juice...I eat nuts, eggs, baked chicken, baked potatoes, watermelon, red grapes, Mandarins, etc...so yeah, I just want to know is it okay if I exercise??
Thanks for your advice, really appreciated. I started doing the other video yesterday to try to reduce my BP not sure but I'm pretty sure I've seen an instant result. As my BP was reduced last night and this morning when checked, after yesterday's afternoons one session.
Hi there. Yes definitely!! All of the videos I've done in this playlist here: th-cam.com/play/PLf9i8qFtMBBK1VBEA-IlSw7VrXxrvxHUF.html will be suitable for people with high blood pressure. However, I do have plans to do a specific blood pressure related home exercise workout video over the coming months, but it will be similar to many of the home exercise ones on here so far. I hope this helps.
Sir, please speak with little slow pace so that one can hear, understand or enable to read the captions in your video. Since,it's difficult for those who do not speak English everytime. Nice information thanks a lot.
Thanks for the feedback. Still relatively new to this (started May 2020) and not completely comfortable yet in front of camera. Hopefully, with experience, it will become more natural and my pace might change.

What about running and cycling You’ve missed probably the most important and the natural way of exercising. It’s so wonderful to be out there instead of in a sweaty gym where you get show pony’s showing off Cheers have a great day
Yes walking, running, cycling, swimming are all staple advice on this channel. This one was more aligned to certain exercises that people do in the gym/ exercise classes.
I'm 20 years old. I have been doing sports for years. I started basketball at the age of 10 and played for 6-7 years. I started fitness at the age of 16. After doing powerlifting for 1 year, I started working in bodybuilding style. I went to the internal medicine department today and the doctor said that I have 14/8 BP and that I need to reduce salt. My question is how should I work. Before 2-3 weeks my BP was always normal, it was in the range of 11.5-12.5systolic 70-85diastolic pulse= 65-100 BMI 25-26 6.3feet 211lb BTW thanks for the information very helpful
Based on your age and what I think your B/P is (140/80?), it is something to keep monitoring. Your B/P isn't considered "very" high, so most exercises you choose should be OK within the guidance I've provided in this video. However, I'm also aware of people undertaking bodybuilding programmes that have increased B/P. Whether this is due to the type of training they're doing or whether it's other factors they make changes to within their lifestyle I don't know, but my advice would just to be cautious in your approach to stay healthy.
I was diagnosed with hypertension and after a month of practicing loe impact exercises my systolic is mostly 105-118 in the morning but now I want to bulk a little to gain some muscle
Yes, it should be OK, particularly if it's the relaxing type. I'm no Yoga practitioner, but I'm aware of some explosive/ dynamic types of yoga that can be more intense. These may be slightly more risky if they are isometric in nature, but most versions should be safe.
No problem. With any resistance or body weight training, systolic blood pressure will increase while performing the exercise. If you can only manage 5-10 reps of the exercise (pull ups/ push ups/ deadlifts etc) then the intensity for you to complete the set will undoubtedly be higher, therefore the blood pressure will be higher. If the weight/ resistance is lighter and you are able to lift/ perform 15-20 reps, then the intensity won't be as high, therefore the blood pressure won't be as high. That's why it's better to do a larger portion of aerobic based activity if you are suffering from hypertension. However, resistance and body weight training for healthy individuals will have a beneficial long term effect if carried out as part of a balanced exercise programme.
I was told a few years ago that I may have pre hypertension by my eye doctor... She said the veins in my eyes were not straight but were all over the place... I've been in sports since elementary school and now I'm 35 and been boxing since 09'. With all of the miles sit ups sparring etc... I would still get tired during sparring and actual bouts. It's really frustrating not being able to compete at the level I know can because of fatigue.
It's unusual for high blood pressure to cause fatigue, but at least you're remaining active. Imagine what your health would be if your were doing nothing at all !
Recent studies say that isometric exercises (Wall sits particularly) are actually the most effective form of exercise for lowering BP. What's your take on this?
Yes. This is an older video before a more recent large collective study came out on isometrics. Please watch that one (10th one down in B/P playlist) here: th-cam.com/play/PLf9i8qFtMBBI9YPPSqbqzFOOYa45N_pPc.html
Hi ! Nice vid With good info.I,m 57 and I eat well, don’t smoke, don’t drink alchool. I take meds for high blood pressure since 20 years. I’ve been doing push-ups ans parallel bar dips for years. I can do high reps like 50 in a row without pain or sweat.I don’t lift weights. Now my question Would be.Since I’ve been practicing in the high reps range, Do I continue to do them even if my heart rate is up? Because I’ve improve my physique and cardio.Thanks.John.
Sounds like you've done well. If you're doing reps that high then it's likely to be more aerobic/ muscular endurance based which will be fine. It's OK for your heart rate to go up with high blood pressure, as long as it's not at or near your maximum heart rate for sustained long periods.
I have been hypertensive for about 4 years. My main mode of exercise is through running. I run a minimum of 100kms per week with my highest ever mileage being 166kms per week last month. My main goal of running is to literally run my way out of hypertension. What risks do I face if any? My body has adapted to my current exercise regimen
I would add, it's a good idea to avoid exercises in which your head is bellow your body (e.g. decline presses). I prefer exercises in sitting or standing position to decline of even to horizontal position.
I've started exercising again to get my BP down and I was doing literally everything wrong, for example I done a one minute plank and thought my head was going to explode and ended up with bloodshot eyes like you wouldn't believe.Loads of great advice in this video which is common sense when it's explained so well, thank you so much.

You're welcome
Iam very glad that I found your video. Thanks so much for your explanation and suggestions. I got HP diagnos recently and has not start to take any medicine yet. The BP could reach 165/90 in tve morning but back to 135/80 in the evening. My question is how I should do with my running. I normally run two/three times each week, total mileage about 40-50km. I would run half marathon twice a year and train for that. I guess I can still run, but do I need to reduce intensity or mileage?
Running will be OK still, unless you have other associated heart problems.
Thanks very imformitive especially tip about dont lift the weight above your head as is the bit about isometric exercise is intresting but unfortunately youtube is full of the oppisite advice saying isometric lowers blood pressure this just confusing

I really just thought i was too week to do a plank. Wow. This video has helped me understand my body so much more. THANK YOU! I am sad though because i love an over head press and ball slams. 😢

Thank you for the tips on avoiding the Valsalva through exhaling.
I've been diagnosed with a tiny pseudo-aneurysm in a vertebral artery and have been advised to avoid the gym because of the risks that come with valsalva (the aneurysm might burst). I'll take up your tip on reducing blood pressure through exhalation with my doctors and see if they can greenlight going to the gym.

Thanks!
Good luck

at 64 i just started on a blood pressure medicine (a diuretic). im muscular build and normal weight and have been weight training practically my whole life and i also ride bicycle daily. my blood pressure was high in the morning and normal in the evening. i hated to have to start this bp med and kept delaying it, but decided to take my doctor's advice.
That's probably a wise decision, and think of the medication as another way (like your exercise) to reduce the risk for other health problems in the future.
This video really helped me!! Thank you so much! You probably saved me from really damaging myself!
You're so welcome!
I am so glad I have found yr channel! I'm 55, just about to have a total rh hip replacement too, with high BP and on meds for that . Getting a bit active again is going to be my best thing.....mainly just want to be walking and doing the right stuff :)

Thank you sir for this great video. I want to ask if lying down with elevated legs raises blood pressure? Thank you Sir for your help
Thank so much. How about pulling weight above your head towards your chest for back exercise. I mean the reverse tip 5. Is that bad
That's OK. It's pressing rather than pulling.

Great tips. No lifting above the head and consider compound exercises. Don't hold your breath (Valsalva maneuver); Thanks !!
No worries!
Thank you!

Great that you're able to get it under control.

Thank you for sharing this very important subject! Wondering what the stablished blood pressure is during running a marathon?
Your systolic reading will be up, but being aerobic, you probably won't see much change in the diastolic reading.

So full body weights workouts are the best?

Great, thank you for this comment.
Thank you so much for explaining breathing techniques

Hello there. Thank you for this very informative video.
I have 2 questions:
@@ExerciseForHealth Thank you very much. God bless you.
Thanks so much, very much needed

You can still do strength training with a resting BP of 130/80, but just be aware that extreme weight lifting will pose an increased risk.
Thank you so much. So Cleary explained. And i have got lot my doubt cleared. 👍

How did it help?
Im a 50yr old heathly powerlifter, now Strongman. Ive been training Strongman for 3 years no problems. Had a gym accident maybe a concussion, got neck adjusted, next day got dizzy sitting down after a set of warmups for logpress. Tested BP it was high. Dr put me on meds my labs came back ok, EKG ok. Doesn't know why I have high BP. Im just walking laps..my diet is good...cant lift weights until BP comes Wow...this sucks . going to see a Naturalpath Dr
Good luck and hope you can get back to normal training again.

Brilliant video. I learnt that I am doing all the wrong exercises given my high BP. But rather then giving me an excuse to give up on exercises you gave me an alternative more beneficial one. BTW I'm surprised that exercises only reduces the pressure by 5 to 10 Mercury. I had hoped it would have been much more
Excellent, well done, and I'm glad it has helped you.
Thank you so much

Thank you for this video
My pleasure
@@ExerciseForHealth Thank you so much for the reassurance!
Yes, it's OK to exercise with a BP of 140/90. Just take on some of the advice in this video so you can make adaptations where required.
Thanks for your advice, really appreciated. I started doing the other video yesterday to try to reduce my BP not sure but I'm pretty sure I've seen an instant result. As my BP was reduced last night and this morning when checked, after yesterday's afternoons one session.

Before 2-3 weeks my BP was always normal, it was in the range of 11.5-12.5systolic 70-85diastolic pulse= 65-100
BMI 25-26
6.3feet 211lb
BTW thanks for the information very helpful
Great!
Great video's thanks for posting. Is yoga safe for high blood pressure? Cheers
Yes, it should be OK, particularly if it's the relaxing type. I'm no Yoga practitioner, but I'm aware of some explosive/ dynamic types of yoga that can be more intense. These may be slightly more risky if they are isometric in nature, but most versions should be safe.
Thank you for the tips...
You're welcome
What about combining compounds with isomets?
Yep, both are good. See my updated video on isometrics that will cover this here: th-cam.com/video/0ds1ipA2VIc/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the great advice
You're welcome
Thanks for the information brother. What about pull-ups and push-ups ? will these workouts increase blood pressure ? Please let us know.

Thanks! Its very appreciated!

@@bernicemorahanye9871 Hi. I started médication at 30. After a few years of exercising I saw a major difference. .
I'm guessing that most of your distance running is done at a steady state so it shouldn't be detrimental to your blood pressure.
Very informative. Thank you!

I would add, it's a good idea to avoid exercises in which your head is bellow your body (e.g. decline presses). I prefer exercises in sitting or standing position to decline of even to horizontal position.
