Born in Waalwijk, Netherlands, Van Gelder took the gold in the men's rings at the 2005 European Championships held in Debrecen, Hungary. He became world champion in the same discipline at the 2005 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne, Australia. He won bronze at the 2006 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. At the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, he won a silver medal.
At the 2016 Summer Olympics, he reached the finals on rings. On August 8, 2016 (one week before the finals), he was dismissed from the Dutch team as a disciplinary measure, because against team rules he had not returned to the Olympic Village until early the next morning after consuming alcohol. As a variation on his nickname "lord of the rings", the Dutch media immediately referred to Van Gelder as "lord of the drinks". A request of a preliminary injunction requiring that the National Olympic Committee would attempt to reinstate Van Gelder's position in the finals was rejected.

If I'm not mistaken professional gymnasts training since around 5 years old so i wonder when he achieved his first planche and Maltese?? I wish i could do all those things.... I'm training since 15 years old now I'm 26, my personal record in one arm pull ups is 20 in one try so it's 40 for both arms, 8-10 hand stand push ups with approximately 6-7kg on push up parallels, human flag pull ups 10 times etc but I'm still struggling with my straddle planche push ups, I can do straddle planche push ups but my legs are hanging down lol I'm 6,1 feet tall, thinking that Yuri can so easily and flawlessly move on rings in every direction and no static is causing any struggle and keep straight face it's just insane 😳💪 and his physics are also very impressive, he looks like bodybuilder but way better, natural, no roids can improve your gymnastic skills 😎😎👌

but extremely skilled &powerful small dude... the strengt it takes to pull off these moves, not least the inverted cross.. dam.. unreal. very talented dutch gynmast.
