I just got a Brilliant a few weeks ago, I never knew a machine could be so great. I have had machines that were "heavy duty", and they don't go through the layers like my Brilliant. Great video, going to give this a try.
Thanks for the pattern, everyone could use oven mitts! I just happened upon your YT channel and I have to say you are a delightful instructor with a bright smile. You make me want to sew more especially with the wonderful colors you use in your projects! God Bless you for sharing your multiple gifts of creativity 🥰
You are always so upbeat. You had me at “not a fan of the crinkly stuff”. Thanks for the tip on alternative batting. Love your use of the bias tape for the loop. Can’t wait to make
Love the idea and helpful video!! I learn better from watching. You actually got me into sewing and buying my babylock only "knowing" you. One question with the added note of adding batting. Where would i put that in the quilt sandwich?? Thanks again for all the projects!!
hahah. Thanks for watching! Add the quilt batting somewhere in the middle. I would do lining fabric, quilt batting, silver heat fabric, outer fabric. Hope that helps! :) - Dana
Would you want to use a walking foot for all those layers or does it come out even without it? I have a Brother machine that is the same as your Babylock!
I love the top you are wearing. Could you please do a video on how to sew that? I am pretty new to sewing and can't figure out how I could make that. I love your channel. Thanks.
Thank you so much!! haha. That yellow top is from Walmart I think! I should show you how to make sleeves like that. I'll have to add it to the list of projects....the long list. haha. Thanks for watching! - Dana
Hi Dana, I was looking for oven mitts on you tube and I found your video and I would like to sew it.I have a question :When stitching all fabrics together , do you use over lock machine so the fabric won't fray?
Yes. You can prewash fabric. Sorry I forget to mention that at times in my videos! If you're going to do that, I would pre-wash/dry ALL the layers you plan to use, so they all "preshrink" :)
Dana, thank you so much for this fun sewing tutorial and free pattern! I am definitely going to make me a pair and then some for Xmas gifts! Keep doing what you do best wth your channel! 😍
Good Morning Dana, you have inspired me - thank you. Now I want to watch all your videos. Please post a link to the ironing board quilting fabric you used. Thanks and Happy Holidays.
Awesome! I'm glad you're excited to sew! Yes, the fabric I used is from Joann Fabrics, but you can use something similar from other shops. Here's what I used: www.joann.com/quilted-ironing-board-cover-fabric/5987888.html
Thank you for the cute pattern. I have seen several patterns online and they all seem to have the same problem...the thumb is too short, which makes it difficult to grip a hot pan securely, because you can't bend your thumb. I apologize if this is a silly question but, how can your pattern be adjusted so folks with long fingers get a proper fit in the thumb area?
Oh good! I'm you like the pattern. You can definitely adjust longer for different needs! I would draw the line of the thumb area out about a 1/2 inch or longer on the paper after you print it. This might take a little trial and error, trying it a few times to get it where you'd like for yourself. But I think that's a fun adventure :) Something to keep in mind is that the "finished" thumb will be longer than how it looks on the pattern piece, since you're sewing into the fabric with your seam allowance. Hopefully that makes sense! Have fun sewing! - Dana

Oh Dana 🤣 Q. I see a lot of sewists trim around the curves of a project with regular scissors 🤔I was just wondering why nobody suggests pinking sheers 🤔 is it or, does it just depend on the thickness, type of fabric, personal preference ??? 🤷🏻♀️just curious because or, what is the purpose pinking sheers?
Hi! That's a great question...yes, you can definitely use pinking shears. And you're right, that is the concept---to trim around with scissors that cut in a zigzag pattern so the fabric edges are less likely to fray over time. So yes, in theory, it's all yes. hahah. But in reality, I hate using them. There. I said it! They're hard to cut with, hard to cut through all those layers. And I don't find that my fabric edges fray very much anyway (even when I make clothing, like shorts, skirts, etc). But you should give them a try and see how you like them! It's all just personal preference. I hope that answers your question! Thanks for watching and chiming in :) Dana
@@no-wire-hangersthat would be amazing! Btw, I made a tartan garland for my husbands 50th bday last week and need to share it on Instagram 😃 You would appreciate it, I hope! 🥰
Yes, you can definitely do that....there are multiple ways to sew attach the bias tape. I thought this would be the easiest method, with the most polished finish. But another way is to sew one of the "side seams" of the oven mitt first , then sew the bias tape to the entire bottom of the two pieces, then sew the rest of the oven mitt together, sewing the other "side seam". The only negative to that is that the side seam is a bit exposed at the opening of the oven mitt. That's why I prefer sewing the bias tape at the end...so it nicely binds the seams inside. Hopefully that makes sense! But just experiment and you'll find which method you like best.
The blog post and this video really need to say that you need extra wide double fold bias tape… I just bought regular double fold bias tape and what you have is definitely the wider version.
Sorry about that. Yes, I will include that information! That’s typically the kind that I use and talk about that in my bias tape video. But I will remember to specify that! I appreciate the input.
@@ashleywalker2611 Oh good! Sorry about that! I just added that detail into the video and tutorial. Also, when you print the pattern (if you printed before tonight at 11pm, go back and grab the updated version), I added a note on there that you can add an additional layer of quilt batting in your oven mitt, in the "quilt sandwich". This is optional, and will make it slightly more bulky to sew...but you might like that ample heat protection. Either way is fine, just wanted to add that tid bit in there! :)
@@MADEEverydaythank you for this! I happened to find an oven mitt that was small and fit my hand (I have small hands), and traced around it for a pattern. But the area between thumb and fingers wasn’t so good. I’m sure yours will work really well.
If this is for a man’s use should I make it bigger all the way around? Would I just add like 1.5 inches around the border? How thick batting do you use? And what fabric is the outer and lining made of? Thank you for your wonderful videos and help.
I had my husband try these out and they worked for him too! But if you're worried about that, yes, you can add an extra 1/2 inch all the way around on the pattern. It might take a little trial and error, like it did for me trying out all those versions :)

Thank you that I can just download a free perfected pattern and sew it up with a great instructional video 👏. Also, you are adorable. These are cute! I'd also recommend using cotton thread so theres no chance of the thread melting.
Good recommendation. Thanks!

Excellent video! What size of needle did you use and what type of sewing foot? Thanks!
