We in South Africa (Calla lilly is indigenous to SA) insert a yakitori stick (bamboo skewer - sometimes 2 or 3, depending on the thickness of the stem) inside the stem of the Calla lilly, before placing it in the kenzan. That is how I was taught by my sensei (Ohararyu). Thanks again, will keep following your beautiful work) ありがとうございました

I can understand that some people stay conservative with artificial tools like Kenzan. But my opinion is similar to Sensei when a tool is so useful, why not give the tool an opportunity. Komi has its own uniqueness when used. Using a Kenzen doesn't mean totally giving up using traditional ways such as Komi.

If you don't have the naoshi, you can use a bamboo skewer for removing plant material stuck in the kenzan, and a ballpoint pen with the ink tube removed to straighten the pins. (Tips given to me by Panda Gifts, Hilo, Hawai'i).
