This is what a remorseful man looks like. No excuses, accepting responsibility. This is a humbled man.
Humbled before himself.
Stronger and prouder than he was before.
A humble man has a future.
An honest centered man
He'd make a terrible politician or President
This is an actor
Give a man a monologue and he’ll give you a masterpiece
Not just any man... Denzel

Hard feeling to get used to
@we up Alcoholics are physically addicted to the sauce. They can't just quit cold turkey. It only sounds stupid to those of us who have never had a crippling addiction involved in our daily lifestyles before.
Keep an eye on this Denzel Washington guy. He's a hell of an actor
Lol, thx for the advice, did he made any more movies?
Professor Drock lol
😆
really keep an eye on him? r u drunk rite now? hes one of the greatest actors in hollywood
@Ricky Rick No man, you must mean the Nutty Professor
He wanted to be locked up so that he couldn't drink anymore.
He saved all those people, but the only one he couldn't save was himself.
Now he's finally free of his depressing addiction. He can be at peace with himself.
People recovering from substance abuse can work on achieving peace. Its not a light switch situation. I liked what you said about saving others but not himself. : D

Trust me you can drink in prison its called Pruno.
They have alcohol in prison too. If you want it bad enough and can put money on peoples books, you can get just about anything you want in there.
You would know
Denzel was perfectly casted for this role. Props to the caster for casting him, and props to Denzel for being a significantly amazing actor.
Denzel is perfectly casted for every role. Not like anyone is taking a risk casting denzel.
Should've been Chris Evans instead but Im not mad
@@iman5094 Should have been Robert Downy Jr.
@@RonT222 Idk man he's kinda overrated because he's Ironman everyone knows Ironman has more acting responsibilities meaning they will exert more and thus showcasing more talent but let them switch their roles then you'll see that Chris Evans may just be the greatest actor of all time.

I'm an alcoholic and his last line is so accurate. There is no prison like being at the bottom of the bottle. There is no loneliness like it in the world. He may be in prison but he is free from the bondage of himself, and that is truly a wonderful place to be... No matter where you are.
Sometimes I hope even a silly quick reply to a comment on your tube can make someone’s day, even perhaps change a life. So, brother - I feel you.
How's things man?
My mom was alcoholic, she went to prison when I was 11 and I saw a few pictures of her in prison and she looked healthier than I ever saw her. She drank way harder when she got out and she drank until the day she never woke up again
Yeah... Just that one beer, that one drink and it's goin'. No stopping.
@@urbainmenace Thank you brother. 8 months sober now.
as a straight addict of 30 years....i still am grateful for no longer being in active addiction...so i understand that gratitude......some never learn and die....
30 years, wow, congrats and like we keep saying, just one day at the time.
Hopefully I can overcome it. It’s been hard and have gotten into a lot of trouble, lost a lot of people in my life. One day at a time for me.
Good for you.
Well done matey I hope you can keep it up. I am really struggling, it used to be Brown and Light but now its mostly alcohol and I know it's going to kill me but there is just such a hold on me. I have support from probation and addiction services and I have a Methadone script but I keep messing up and I'm really sick of it. It's been like 10 years now.
God damn you addicts are pathetic no wonder you lash out in rage and anger. Especially alcoholics.
Alan Silvestri's score for this movie is so good, adds so much emotional weight
Any time I ask myself who the greatest actor of all time is, Denzel immediately comes to mind. Every time. He is truly phenomenal at what he does.
Aye good call David.
I'd say Gary Old man... They should make a movie...
Him and Jack Nicholson. I can think of a bad movie either of them have been in.
Why did he go to prison? He didn't cause the plane crash.
Ehh gotta go with Leo Dicaprio or Sean Penn(even though hes a douchebag).
It's very liberating when you don't have to hide your flaws. The only difficult part is revealing them to the world in the first place.
Denzel Washington is one of a kind. He is my favorite actor. There’s no one else like him.
facts
I thought this was one of the most incredible movies I have watched; thank you Denzel!
He and the writers must have interviewed alchololics or went to AA meetings or something because the way he delivers those lines is exactly the way we feel, alchololics I mean. It's a mixture of sadness, happiness, shame and pride all at once. It's a truly amazing feeling to be sober once booze no longer has a grip on you.
Let’s grab a drink 😂
@@fogtown3027 Don’t worry FOOGY, you too can become sober. First step is to stop treating it like a joke, and take the problem seriously.
@Stinky Ham One month sober today and I feel great. I’ll save the long story of why or how but I feel much more confident this time that I am going to stay sober. I have changed my diet and gotten active in just this first month. Lost 18 lbs, signed up for a tennis club, gotten back into flying lessons for my private pilot license, and I haven’t had anything close to a serious temptation for alcohol. I just bottomed out and couldn’t stand how sick I felt every single horrible day of drinking. It’s to the point now where I am actually mad at alcohol for all the time it took from me. I really feel like I will never go back this time. It’s a great feeling.
@@robert4039 That's awsome. Just watch out for the A-hole friends that want to keep you from being sober. It's good you found/renewed interest, it's important to keep busy those first few months. I Understand what you mean by being angry at the booze it is a complete waste of time and keeps you from the things that will actually make you happy. Keep it up and don't have a drink on me.
@Stinky Ham Thanks bro!
Being an alcoholic myself, and having been to a few meetings...I 'd say Denzel did a good job sharing /acting this scene.
Well said
I wish there were no music. Just imagine feeling like you were there listening to him talk. Much more immersive.

after watching a denzel washington movie, you never think of who else could've played that role. he just owns it completely.
I was on the verge of tears in 2 moments in this movie: when his son was angry at him, ordering him out, and on the end, when they made amends. Thats a happy ending right there.
This monologue made me tear up.. and that’s fair.
This man can act any personality ! Pilote policemen fireman train driver lawyer soldier doctor . The best actor ever !
Absolutely amazing. Man on fire is soooo good.
@@1CounterTerrorist my favorite is training day
Then he went on driving a train

The real question is...
Did he almost crash, but actually save the train by inverting it?
😂
That was a good movie
Not to be "that guy" but you don't *drive* a train (it has no steering wheel), you *run* a train.
He burnt bridges, yet he started to build new ones with his son and he is able to understand that he has a problem and find ways to help him through this obstacle in his life. Whatever happens after the end is left up to the viewer. In that, I commend the film-makers. This was a brilliant film.
This movie was one of those movies i watched reluctantly and randomly one night and ended up impressing me a great deal.
If taking away public trust was 5 years in prison then all politicians would be sitting for 20 to 50.
Excellent performance by Denzel and quite deserving of his Oscar nomination.
Cried my eyes out the end of this film " The most fascinating person I've never met " Denzels face such a good actor
To people saying that they wanted a happy ending , this is honestly the best one he could have gotten . If he was let out his addictions would have probably caused another accident , he couldn’t get over it after the crash so what are the chances he’ll recover, very slim . This is a bittersweet ending , he’s paying for his crimes but he finally got over his addiction and in a sense he is free
Zane Wong wow beautiful
he never caused the accident though he saved peoples lives while drunk and high when nobody else could do it
"caused another accident"??? Um, I thought the accident wasn't his fault?
Very well put, he may have ruined his life, but he saved his soul and his conscience by not ruining his dead friend's name and reputation when he easily could have.
he ain't caused the accident tho lol he plaid guilty cause he wanted to get over his addiction.
"It was as if I had reached my lifelong limit of lies, I couldn't tell one more lie"
So meaningful and touching from a very realistic actor.. I can't believe he was acting.. as much as he convinced me of the role that representing his character...
I'm a alcoholic, this film saved me some days I sometimes drink, can't get sober because I'm scared of withdraws, but when I watch clips from this movie I feel better and start to sober up, this film is more than a plane, it's a life of alcoholism
Not sometimes, I take a shot of vodka every 30 minutes
Hope you’re doing better now bro.
Another great movie I saw on late night AMC television that I wouldn't have seen otherwise, thank you.
The irony is, him being drunk was probably the reason why he was able to land that plane with minimal losses. Besides probably having calmed his nerves, he was able to conjure up something bizarre, crazy and perhaps genius to save a lot of people on that plane by flying it upside down. Several pilots who later tried to save that plane in the simulator failed.
Lol
Several is putting it lightly lol. 20 different tried and they all killed everyone on the plane.
It does give you a sense of confidence, unfortunately that usually ends up with drivers trying stupid stuff like overtaking at inappropriate times or driving much too quickly because they feel like an invincible badass.
I uh.. I wouldnt go that far. Maybe he just was a gifted pilot. He would have been even better sober.
I remember that when i played certain online battle tank game, after drinking, that i was killing it, like i got from Tier 3 level to tier 7, which usually takes days to accomplish.
This is personal for me ...thanks brother for this scene, I am forever grateful.
Some people will never understand this but it is so real…just to be thankful you’re sober
Yes he was drunk, but the plane still had issues that would have accrued if he was sober
Yes, but the next time he flew he might have killed all those on board because he was drunk....it is only a matter of time.
Two wrongs dont make a right. Movie turned him from a villain to a hero after he confessed.
Meanwhile some immigrated Russian engineer downs a fifth of vodka before coming to design aircraft in 1970s factory.
the aircraft was overstressed because of him
He's not guilty of the deaths of those 6 people, he's guilty of flying a jet that time and all the other times drunk and endangering the lives of literally a hundred people at a time. If he had been deemed at fault, he would've likely been given a life sentence.
Drinking and driving can, depending on the jurisdiction, result in jail time of up to a year. A plane is capable of far more destruction and requires far more skill and both of these facts are further exacerbated by being a commercial pilot. The latter of these includes provisions of public trust similar to doctors and engineers: people's lives depend on your actions and you need to be accountable to their safety. All of these would be escalators to his jail sentence as would the fact that this was far from an isolated incident.
The one area where I disagree with this movie is that he would likely be hailed as a hero, that the crash happened in spite of his inebriation and his actions are such that he demonstrably saved lives and so there would likely be some clemency. For violating the public trust, he would never be allowed to have it again so lifetime ban of commercial license is a certainty. His pilots license being suspended indefinitely or permanently would also be expected. But I'm less convinced he'd get jail time. Probation which includes sobriety requirements and attending counseling, possibly some fines or community service, possible some other conditions, etc, feel more in line with what a court would do.
after the monologue:
woman at counter: Sir, i only asked for your name, please take a number, we'll call you when your order is ready
Sir this is a Wendy’s
😭😂😂😭😂😭
😂😂😂
Apply this joke to any monologue and it makes it hilarious.

Speaking as an alcoholic- Denzel Washington has such a simple way of acting that hits the mark more often than not. I'd like to say I can't imagine being a pilot and a drinker at once, but I can. Addiction has a grip that softly tightens, but when it has you, it's grip is Strong and terrible.
Yes indeed my friend, high functioning alcoholic of many years here and it still has a grip…🤷♂️
This speech in itself should've won Denzel and Academy Award.
From a lifelong heroin addict and polysubstance user with nearly 5 years clean, that last line is beautiful.

And he was able to start reconciling with his son.
If this man wasn't drunk, every goddamn person on that plane would be dead
Nobody gets sobriety handed to them. It requires a "persistent effort". The rewards, however, are profoundly life changing!
Is there any actor better than Denzel? I can’t think of any. Truly amazing.
Yes lol
Kevin Bacon
Going with dicaprio on that one
"Locked up in prison". Nah, just sitting in the Gwinnett County Jail in this scene.
Every time Denzel has a monologue he makes it a masterclass in acting.
He doesn’t even need the monologue. That 30 seconds, when he realizes all he has to do to save himself, and his career as a pilot, is tell one little lie. Give up Katarina. I mean, she’s dead, right? How can she be hurt at this point. But he can’t do it. He cared for her, maybe even loved her. And she died because she saved a little boys life. He just can’t destroy her memory. You can see all of that in his face. THAT is acting.
Real addicts know sometimes you gotta hit rock bottom to stop
Nah.. it is possible just to stop.. if ur not weak minded..
@@sanderkonto297 If only it was that easy. Detox can be extremely dangerous for long time addicts. Going cold turkey for an alcoholic can be fatal to some folks. Addiction occurs because your body literally develops a physical dependency on the substance and the chemical balance in your brain adjusts to accommodate the existence of this substance over a long enough time scale. Its to the point that once they remove said substance from their system which their body has depended on for years it is enough to kill some people. Finding the mental courage is but one part of fighting addiction. Dealing with the physical consequences on your body during Detox is the other. Its why detox should always be under the supervision of a medical team.
As an alcoholic in recovery, I understand fully what he means by being free.
I’m trying… not as hard as I should be but I am TRYING
I liked the end of this movie because it's so relatable to my life, except for the locked up part. Drugs and alcohol had a hold of me from 13 to 39yo and the last line is so real cause no matter your situation you're never free to control and live your life until you're sober...

The special effects are great but what makes the movie is the acting. Just a camera and a mic and Denzel.
Great movie. I never expected him to confess at the end but he did and faced up to the consequences. Amazing ending .
Always a fan. Seems a good man in daily life which is refreshing for Hollywood.
He’s a good man, he made a mistake but that doesn’t make him a bad person. He took responsibility for his mistake and accepted it. That’s how he is a good man.

_To be finally free of the insanity of alcoholism, the inability to function without it, the loss of loved ones because of it. There is no greater freedom than sobriety._
His drinking did not cause the crash, nor did it stop him from saving most of the passangers.
Yet he was still drunk
Still, when there is a crash, someone needs to be held responsible.
No, it didn't... but he's not supposed to be flying drunk either way you look at it. They are two separate issues; he saved everyone AND he betrayed the public trust. Just because they happened at the same time doesn't mean he's not responsible for the latter.
I saw this a few daysbefore Pesach. Denzel says he is free sitting in prison. Though he is at the lowest point in his life, having lost family, friends, career, and “freedom”, he is finally at peace in a way that makes it all “OK”. He faced a tidal wave of his own “failures” and, not only survived, but grew in astonishing ways.
Pesach, a.k.a Passover, is the season for liberation. In fact the whole MONTH is a time when liberation from the “pharaohs” that we ALLOW to imprison us is available to us in an EXTRAordinary way. Yes. We can find our way out of “egypt” EVERYDAY of our lives, but there is something special, in a cosmic way, about THIS month and THIS week and THIS day of Pesach.
Amazingly, it all starts with desire...not will...not effort...just desire; just the KNOWING that you are in a place that you don’t want to be. You must then have the courage to actually WALK OUT OF YOUR EGYPT when you are set free (cause sometimes being in prison becomes the safer place to be)
The reason powerful elephants can be held in place with a simple rope tied to a peg in the ground is because when they were young, they were CHAINED to and enormous tree. They would pull and pull and pull to be free until they LEARNED that freedom was not possible when there was something on their leg. So when their handler ties that rope on their leg, THEY WON’T EVEN TRY to escape. They believe, they have LEARNED, a lie. YOU, me, everyone of us have a “rope on our leg”. It CANNOT contain us, but we ALLOW IT TO.
Amazingly, because we are all part of nature, the answer WILL COME. It is like we are all caterpillars. WE Will become butterflies. We cannot NOT become butterflies. It is our destiny. Whether or not we KNOW it or BELIEVE it or even DENY it, we are DESTINED to walk out of every “egypt” in our lives. Just start with the DESIRE to.
Denzel Washington is one of my favorite actors. He kinda always looks like he has a gum ball in his mouth haha

I have been an alcoholic for many years! This is now about the 10th time I've tried to break this awful addiction.. I've tried so hard I can't believe it took me this long to finally understand how hard this is! I have been sober for quite some time now almost 5 months and I know deep down that it is very easy to go back to this hell. They say the first step is to become aware of your addiction. Over 20 years I figured it out but it's still hard.. Alcoholism follows you forever and is a constant battle in your life! Try not to judge alcoholics harshly!

Most addicts dont get sober until they have lost everything, This is a great example of that. Its hard for a man who is a functioning person and a successful pilot with a great job to admit he has a problem.
I've been struggling with alcoholism the better part of the last 5 years. I have good spells, but I always end up going right back to the bottle the second anything gets to be too much. I know, when I AM sober, that I should stop. I NEED to stop, but I'm living proof that it's a disease. You can't always just stop. Sometimes, the issue is rooted so deep inside of you, it needs to be cut out, and scenes like this make me just a little bit hopeful that one day, despite all my issues, despite my dependency on this poison, I'll find the strength to cut it out. To all of my comrades in arms, who have managed to beat this evil, I ask that you pray for me. I could really use it.
Gotchu. God speed.
