    unlike popular belief, I got into Stanford. I just decided to go to Berkeley because it was cheaper.

    The myth that all Berkeley students were rejected from Stanfurd is so not true. We are here because UC Berkeley is an amazing school. Everyone at CAL is blessed to attend.

      Hahahaha bitch please, you know goddamn well that you Cal peeps have nothing on us Stanford

      Still, don't make yourself look bad with your language. :P Practice what you preach.

      Jose Chavez Well, although I thank you for the tip, generally speaking, I wasn't commenting on a Stanford video, so I didn't put my best character in the format and commenting. I'm quite courteous when amongst my Stanford people. :P

    I saw a video similar to this, interviewing students at Harvard. One of the questions was, "why did you go to Harvard?" One would think that is almost a rhetorical question, but to my surprise, one student replied that he only came to Harvard b/c he was rejected to u of Chicago. He was basically lamenting over the fact that he was at HARVARD. I say this to highlight the fact that perspective is important. People might bash cal student by labeling them as "Stanford rejects," but it's honestly pretty silly as cal is one of the best universities in the world, and extremely hard to get into. There are so many students who consider cal to be their #1 dream school. This constant chain of "one-upping" others to assume the higher position of the totem pole is getting tiring, and is pretty useless. In all honesty, it's undergrad we're talking about... if you're going to any top 30 school in the nation you're going to be fine as long as you work hard and make the best of it. Most of us need to go to grad school anyway.

    On the waitlist at Cal currently and I'm a transfer student who is from the Bay. I never even thought about these stereotypes before applying, I mainly focused on the academics and where they would get me post grad. I would say the stereotypes are fun to explore and either prove or debunk, but for any new students considering Cal I wouldn't take them too seriously. In terms of crime especially, I grew up in Vallejo (a "bad" neighborhood) and I've been going to the city college in Berkeley for three years. I often commute late at night after a long day of class or after work, and I have never been mugged or had anything stolen from me. I think it depends on the area you choose to live in if you're going off campus. Oakland or El Cerrito have a bad reputation, but Downtown Berkeley is relatively safe since its a huge college town. Overall I would say just if you haven't grown up in a "big city" (even though Berkeley is pretty small compared to say NYC or even SF) then there will definitely be a culture shock. But if you've lived in any kind of an urban area before, then there are no real surprises.

    I've been accepted to UCSB and to Cal and I'm really torn between the two.. I think one thing that's keeping me from Cal is hearing how all of the students are super stressed, always working, and always feeling inferior to other students. Do you feel like that's how it is for you at Cal?

    • @HsuTimothy
      @HsuTimothy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Congrats on your admission! I think that students here do definitely feel stressed from academics but I think that's common amongst all top colleges. Moreover, I also believe that a sense of inferiority exists in all colleges because there is inevitably always someone out there that will know more than you. However, I think that this also pushes a lot of students at Berkeley to go above and beyond to "catch up" to their peers. This form of friendly competition really puts Berkeley students in more advantageous positions compared to students at other colleges. Hope this helped!

    I was an undergraduate in 1964 when Barrows Hall was built. I was personally offended by this hideous example of 1960s campus architecture, and so were a lot of other students. If it is still standing a half century later, I would imagine it is still a huge embarrassment to what is otherwise a colorful and attractive university campus.

    perhaps this will be a biased pool to draw information from, but cal or ucla? If you could give me some pros and cons that would be great.

    • @HsuTimothy

      Hm not really too sure about UCLA but some pros for UCB are that we offer a wide pool of majors to choose from so if you're undecided, you have a lot of majors to choose from. Moreover, everyone at UCB is really competitive so it really pushes you to perform well. This could be a double-edged sword because if you get lazy you'll also find yourself at the bottom. Good luck!

    If you make under $120k, it's free tuition at Stanford. Don't know why everyone needs to perpetuate the idea that Stanford is "too expensive" when for most people it's substantially cheaper than Berkeley.

      Jonny Watts it's because they were too dumb to get in or too stuck up to attend a JC to transfer. UC Berkeley students have a chip on their shoulders because its reputation has taken a bit of a hit lately. It was an underrated UC powerhouse on par with the Ivy's from the 60's-90's but lately they are considered to be below most state schools with a higher price. They love to take their pain out on Stanford.

    • @Gallic_Gabagool
      @Gallic_Gabagool 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Worse than state schools? Is that why it's the #1 public university in the country?

    • @Gallic_Gabagool
      @Gallic_Gabagool 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are definitely more expensive for master programs.

      Jonny Watts I haven't checked the official stats, but I don't think "most students" who want to apply to Stanford are in that range. From what I've seen, most people who apply are like this:
      - You're very rich and it's no problem (many students)
      - You're upper middle-class and it's a huge pain but you see it as worth the money (many students)
      - You're middle class and qualify for the free tuition (many students)
      - You're under middle class and don't even apply because you assume there's no way you can afford it
      As you can see, 3 out of 4 categories don't even have the benefit available to them. It seems like many students have good-wage parents who unfortunately pass the 120K$ amount by just a little with both of their salaries combined, like $125K, $130K, or $140K. It's important to emphasize how, especially if you're a California native, the average person who would consider going to Stanford doesn't seem to benefit greatly from this.

      shonz88 As well as what the other commenters said, you’re wrong in saying that Berkeley students are “too stuck up to attend a JC to transfer.” I attended a JC and got into Berkeley, and I didn’t even apply to Stanford. Why? Because they don’t have official agreements with JC’s like CSU and US schools do. Check assist.org. The transfer rate for all students to Stanford is about 5%, and JC students make up an even smaller percentage of that. It’s Stanford who is stuck up by trying to keep out transfer students so that I can keep up an image of only accepting “pure” students straight out of high school. They view transfer students like the runts of the litter who barely managed to scrape by and get in. I didn’t even bother jumping through all the hoops just to get rejected by them, so I attended the #1 public university on Earth.

    Berkeley is not about learning, it's about the "Berkeley" experience. You will learn more working in a cubicle/factory/construction site/lab from a ruthless supervisor. Higher education is just like daycare, but three times the price.
