Fascinating! I just got a fife and the book “.... and Called the Folks Together: A Manual on the Use of Fife and Drum in the American Continental Army” and can’t wait to learn how to play and learn more about the various tunes they would play for various commands and all. I have JROTC and band (trombone) experience, but those two classes competed when I was in school. It’s too bad they didn’t work together! Thanks for the information

      Bugle was for Cavalry.
      Fife was for Infantry.

Can't help remembering Georges Clemenceau's gallows humour (French WW1 politician): “Military justice is to justice what military music is to music".
Soldiers were routinely executed for desertion and mutiny at the time.
[Edited because I remembered the quotation better 5 minutes afterward.]

I've got 2 wooden fifes, just like yours, just of a beige colour. Seem to be in B-bemolle. I don't even know the brand. Is fife a cromatic instrument? I cannot find a fingering chart for this model. Any other fife chart that I have found doesn't go well...

Perhaps it's a different key than the traditional B♭?

I most probably wouldn't be grabbing my piece with that first number, but dancing a jig.
