    I've got 2 wooden fifes, just like yours, just of a beige colour. Seem to be in B-bemolle. I don't even know the brand. Is fife a cromatic instrument? I cannot find a fingering chart for this model. Any other fife chart that I have found doesn't go well...

    Can't help remembering Georges Clemenceau's gallows humour (French WW1 politician): “Military justice is to justice what military music is to music". Soldiers were routinely executed for desertion and mutiny at the time. [Edited because I remembered the quotation better 5 minutes afterward.]

    As the grand (x7) granddaughter I love finding bits of information on Shadrach Byfield's significance in history. I was born in England but my parents moved to the U.S. when I was three, so I've lived a typical American life in the Midwest (Ohio specifically) most of my life. How delightful to learn that I ended up having a connection to a spot not far away, even after centuries of my ancestors living in England and my parents only moving here relatively recently! From what I've heard, Byfield was a real piece of work, full of piss and vinegar and always up for a fight, but I'd like to think our family of artists, executives, hippies, and teachers still holds on to a bit of his ornery, rule-breaking disposition.

    Fascinating! I just got a fife and the book “.... and Called the Folks Together: A Manual on the Use of Fife and Drum in the American Continental Army” and can’t wait to learn how to play and learn more about the various tunes they would play for various commands and all. I have JROTC and band (trombone) experience, but those two classes competed when I was in school. It’s too bad they didn’t work together! Thanks for the information

    I want to add this little fact, everyone at this time used a larger barrel/smaller ball combination as to make room for the fowling to grow, doing so helped insure that the soldiers could load and fire continuously without being slowed down.

      I don't know about the US, but in Europe they were hollow, but some with chinstraps (eg those worn by Hussars) had a cloth diaphragm with a drawstring that could be used to hold items that didn't easily fit into packs and pouches. Great for stowing loot. These ones look too short to be that type, so most likely just simple hollow felt cylinders.

      hubby was saying they were known to have used them basically like sacks while foraging. (we are reenactors for the timeframe)

    • @FortMeigsHistoricSite
      @FortMeigsHistoricSite 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It was meant to be worn tucked into the side. One theory as to the large size is that it could be taken off, unfolded, and used to collect forage, thus the name "forage cap."

  • @schoolhouseboys6940

      @FortMeigsHistoricSite 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is theorized that the cap could be taken off and used to collect forage - nuts, berries, wild vegetables, etc. as the soldiers often did. Thus the term "forage cap."
