- Catching some spectacular and very acrobatic wild brown trout from a small mountain tarn in the Lake district. Action packed session using both lures and fly fishing, catching some spectacular coloured fish at a very respectable sizes considering they inhibit a lake high in the mountains. Also got some great underwater footage of the trout in the crystal clear water they call home.

I used to go up there quite a lot, finish work on site in York on a Friday, drive straight up, walk up, tent up and fishing by 8.00.
My biggest Tarn trout was caught there a few years back, about the same as yours.
Bit of advice, when fly fishing wild waters you must be constantly on the move, take a step every cast. That is more important than fly choice, line etc.
I’ll bear it in mind! As I’m still a beginner on the fly fishing I was mostly trying the places with a lot of space behind me and not long grass soon hopefully I’ll have better control and will be able to keep the fly higher

That rigged and ready rod was awesome. The way you could switch from spinning to fly without carrying a second rod on your hike was ideal!

As you get to the lake, I used to fish the far left-hand corner. Had a few Schelley from there too.

Only just discovered this channel. Great to see some UK based trout fishing content. Watched your vids on Hayeswater and Haweswater.. I've tried fishing in the lakes a couple of times whilst on holiday there.. How can I find out which tarns you are allowed to fish in and are they all catch and release? Thanks.
Glad you're enjoying the videos! They are all catch and release yeah, as for finding out which ones are free to fish theres plenty of information on google. If you find a specific one you want to fish a bit of research will tell you if it's owned by an angling association!

Depends on the one mate, some are private some are club run and some are free. Just need to do the research 👍

I feel Haweswater still has so much to offer I need to try fishing there more often. Any tips on getting at some trout from there? I here there’s some big ones but it’s hard to get around all the perch

Surprisingly I didn't see any at all usually I see quite a few at places like this, I caught the biggest on a small lure that sort of imitates a minnow though so they could've just been avoiding the margins when i went. Plenty of fly life though and some vegetation in the water which is unusual for a mountain tarn
I havn't seen any minnows and I've fished on there quite a lot, there's supposed to be Perch but not seen or caught any.

Absolutely! There seemed to be a bit more vegetation and more fly life at this tarn compared to some others, possibly because it's at a lower altitude

Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed it! The reason my landing net is so small is so I can easily fold it up and put it in my backpack, can be quite annoying carrying a lot of fishing stuff up into the mountains I like to pack light!

@@adventurefishinguk Nope, I've climbed and camped all over the Lakes but only fished on one trip a few years ago. I've seen good reports on it so it'll defo be on my hit list next time up there. Have you fished Angel Tarn, north of Hayeswater, heard good things about that too?

The trout you caught on the spinner that was bleeding was certainly as eggs are eggs going to die. Why not fish with a single BARBLESS hook on your spinners as you have to do in most clubs? It’s called respecting your quarry!
Thanks for the comment, I don’t believe the fish will die personally. Wild fish are more resilient than people give them credit for, I’m by no means saying that to justify poor fish treatment but a bit of blood from a fish is an unfortunate by product of it having a hook in its mouth. Sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn’t! I’ve also never been part of a club that demands single barbless hooks and in addition to this my local tackle shops don’t sell anything single hooked or barbless so I’ve never had any. I crush my barbs when I can but have yet to see a single hooked lure in the shops I visit. That said, I’ve had a few people suggesting them to me over the past few months and this video was from last summer so for next season I intend to make improvements and use some better lures.

,I can be 99% sure that any fish returned to the water whilst bleeding is not going to survive. As far as treble hooks are concerned it doesn’t take much imagination on how to chop off a treble and replace it with a small split ring and a single barbless hook. I don’t want to dampen your obvious enthusiasm but the fish must be respected and I think your hopeful wish that it swims away to live a happy life is a tad naive. If you don’t agree then I can only suggest to talk to someone with more experience than both of us. Tight lines. Cheers DW
@@davidwillacy4796 Well you certainly sound like you know more about me on the topic. I hate the thought of releasing a trout for it to die shortly after i'll definitely take more care in the future. Unfortunately deep hooking fish is always a possibility with all methods including fly fishing, albeit less likely. I'll try take steps to make sure this doesn't happen as often and aim to educate more people about it when i'm talking on camera. If it happens again regardless maybe i'll take the fish to eat; as much as I prefer catch and release it seems the lesser of the two evils and would prefer that to the fish going to waste. Especially if mortality is 99% with any indication of blood. Thanks for the comment
You seem to make every effort to return and not harm your catch. I'll say that trebles should always be avoided and replaced with single, barbless hooks which are available online if not available locally. I've inadvertently deep hooked a few trout over the years while flyfishing with barbless hooks as small as a #16 nymph that didn't survive but I've returned hundreds unharmed overall. Wild tarns have a very precious, unique stock of beautiful native trout that have evolved over eons in these harsh mountain environs. A certain German TH-camr who fishes wild mountain tarns in the west of Ireland sometimes kills some of these treasures for the table. I trolled him as much as I could to shame him. You are clearly a more ethical individual who appreciates the magic of the rare, wild trout that live in these remote beautiful places. Hats off to you!

Some are free some need a permit, it’s just a matter of finding and researching where you want to fish!

Pity you've given heads up to every fish monger in town on the location .... maybe think about it for future videos you share ? Surely just saying a lakeland tarn is more than enough info ?
I think the types of people that fish these places and are willing to hike will be the types of people to fish responsibly and respect their environment! I get your point though as the fish here are quite sizeable in relation to the majority of the tarns. I will definitely think about making the name generic if I discover another place with fish like this but for the most part when fish are smaller I imagine I’ll continue to name the tarns as fishing them is the type of fishing I enjoy most and documenting through videos. I’m not the first to make videos like this and a quick google search gives people information on which ones to fish anyway!
I’d say you haven’t been responsible. Treble hooks and barbed. You need to replace them with single barbless hooks.
Bongs Fishing Haha, what a joke, you’re not even fishing responsibly! Why use treble hooks? And as for broadcasting to everybody, why don’t you stick to reporting on places round your neck of the woods? I hope to God you don’t find another place.
Steven Cook I do, the spinners were barbless but as for the salmo lure just left it as it comes, really should’ve crushed the barbs. I’ll work on it for the future 👍
scott w don’t have any single hooked spinners, I’ve heard they’re good though planning on getting some. As for my neck of the woods, I’m Cumbrian and have fished the Lake District for years before starting my TH-cam channel, not just me making videos on this places. If you look at some previous conversation threads you’ll see my rationale for naming them, in instances like this because of the average size being quite big for the location so if I find another place like this in the future I will keep its name quiet. If you don’t like the videos you don’t have to watch them but thanks for the comment

Why on earth are you telling the world and it’s grandma the location of these waters ? These are very delicate eco systems and deserve respect. What fishermen ever told their mates the best spots ? 🤷♂️🤦🏻
Hi Mark, thanks for the comment firstly I appreciate the feedback. I know it’s somewhat of a touchy subject and I’ve had discussions about it replying to other people’s comments. For my future videos I’m going to stop naming the tarns, only had a couple hundred subscribers when I made that video. Still I’m one of the people who doesn’t mind telling my friends good fishing spots and want people to be out enjoying themselves too. I understand and have been slightly naive of the issues this could cause and have learned from the feedback of others. Thanks again for getting in touch!

As you know the fells are becoming busier than ever and especially last year after the lockdown it attracted the wrong type of visitors that left litter everywhere with no regard for its beauty. Thats why it concerned me. I’ve watched lots of Scottish loch fishing videos and sea videos where they never name the location. Especially important here I think. I understand people get pleasure from viewing all these hidden tarns and fishing for the trout that inhabit them ,but if you had one ounce of respect for those fish you would never reveal the exact location and post on the biggest social media platform out there.
Are you gullible enough to think that these self promotional videos dont contribute to the decline of the trout that live in them?
Ever wondered why some of these tarns have next to nothing in them nowadays?
Its because of past over fishing with spun baits by greedy people smacking every trout on the head, simply because they could as its free unregulated fishing with no strings attached.
Advertising this location is in my view totally irresponsible and as a local who fishes it a 3 or 4 times a year I can honestly say Id rather you hadnt had the location revealed to you for the aforementioned reasons.
If it were a large lake or river that can sustain pressure -then fair enough,but not small tarns which historically get fished out once discovered and potentially ruined for years as a result.
Wild brown trout are on the decline in the Lake District and need protecting from persecution not by promoting the remote locations they inhabit.
Internet ,GPS ,Social Media kills everything.
Hi Jimmy, I’m sorry you think this is irresponsible and I see your concern. However, I believe fishing is something to be enjoyed by everyone and people should be able to enjoy the sport in places like these as long as they are responsible. Other people have made videos fishing here before too and it’s not just me who videos these places. As for you labelling this “self promotion”, I disagree. The reason I do this is because I enjoy fishing and I enjoy documenting my experiences exploring and sharing them with people who are interested. Fishing these Tarns is definitely a niche when it comes to fishing and many people would rather not fish places that require a hike with fishing gear up to them when they have all the lakes with much bigger fish to go at. I believe people who want to fish these places have every right to and I understand that if this is a regular spot of yours and I’ve just made a video here you could be concerned about it but at the end of the day it’s not just you who’s allowed to fish here and other people are allowed to enjoy what it has to offer. That said, I will take your advice on board as I think it’s very important these places are preserved but not through selfish secrecy. I’ll spend more time in future videos talking about the importance of sustainability and fishing responsibly and I appreciate your input, I’ll try to work on it. Thanks for the comment!

Your correct,fishing is of course for everyone and no one wants to deny anyone the chance of catching a fish,indeed fishing and conservation are embroiled together-right?
The point I made that you have partially recognised isnt specifically to me commenting on the vid by some act of petty jealousy or selfishness just because you caught trout in a tarn I occasionally fish in,its because you have named and basically made it so much more accessible by uploading on here as opposed to if you hadn't,for the whole wide angling world to view,some of whom would think it absolute normal behaviour to travel up the hill and camp next to the tarn for the weekend,catch kill and remove all the breeding stock which isnt difficult with 3 or 4 able minded anglers,then wrap up and back down the m6 on Sunday.
You wouldnt want that to happen would you?
So in hindsight ,the vid couldve been made thoughtfully without all the obvious name dropping.
Remember what I said about being gullible?there are folk who use videos like yours as an information highway not just for genuine enjoyment..
The Lakes and Tarns are for everyone to fish over with a Northwest Rod Authority Licence and genuine anglers are always welcome,but please bare in mind that wild trout are on the decline in the area.

Personally I would have tried and sent that as a private message Jimmy and not quiet as aggressive towards Bongs Fishing... yes... fishermen don't give tactics away location points etc as neither do I with wildfowling positions... ive just looked and its 700ft climb to it... let's be honest here the average fishermen isn't what you would call a mountain goat.... I also fish these small tarns incorporated into a fell run then a wild camp... i spend hours in the fells and i have never come across people fishing the "high level" ones... i agree some people will use these vids unwisely for that we can't stop... but just type in lakeland tarn fishing into the Internet Jimmy... there is far more damming info on there fella..... from all the fishermen giving locations away.
Thanks mate I agree! I can see the attraction in wanting to keep these spots private but for the most part I don’t think people will make the trek for it and those that do will likely have an appreciation for the surroundings and fish they are catching! Anyone that would say empty the lake are the ones doing the wrong thing here, not the person taking a video while fishing them!
Another video advertising fishing. I really can't understand why anglers find good fishing then need to post it all over social media. Go fish it, enjoy it and keep it yourself.
The type of fishing I enjoy involves exploration and constantly visiting new places, and documenting my experience at them! I’ve had trips that’ve been good and I’ve had them that’ve been bad and I enjoy sharing the good ones with those that are interested so more people can enjoy what these places have to offer!
