- This documentary from filmmaker Tendani Mpulbusi explores the rich but turbulent history of the Barry Farm neighborhood in Ward 8 of Washington, DC. The once prominent Southeast neighborhood currently faces the same economic and social challenges experienced by communities throughout the District. Mpulbusi received grants from the Humanities Council of Washington, DC in 2008, 2009, and 2010 for the project, and he has generated a substantial collection of footage, research, and interviews that will soon be part of an expanded version of Barry Farm: Past and Present.
I was born@ Gallinger Hospital and lived at 1120 Howard Road S.E.(Barry Farm) near the old Coal Yard. Some people called it the 'hood, some people called it the slums and some people called it the Ghetto; however, I have been proud and will continue to be proud to call Barry Farm my Home.
I love Barry farms
I came when I was 3 months old we move out when u was 16 yes old .
I will always love my hometown, DC!!!
Big K liquor is gone now
My home 🥺🥺, I was born in DC general hospital. Born and raised in Barry Farms. Good times
I am also from her phone but I live there in the 40s and 50s I went to the old Birney school we called it Nicholas Avenue in those daysAnd also I attended the Little annexed they built across the bridge
They walked all the way to Georgetown to work; and return home each day to build their homes. Unfortunately, this historical area was allowed to go down.
I lived on Sumner Rd in the late 70s. I left after I graduated from Ballou H.S. in 81. We moved to the Farm from Park Chester. That was considered a down grade back then but I was glad because I got my own room. It was a wild joint back then but all we had to worry about was brothers getting shot while throwing dice. For the most part my boy Ed and I minded our own business; well we didn’t get caught, we made it through just fine. Damn I kind of miss it.
This is history! Learn it and don't let it repeat itself!

Lol he didn’t have anything to do with Barry Farm
@@mapsglover8511 wasn't he the mayor of DC. OH OK. Carry on
@@chedebnam6025 he didn’t have anything to do with Barry farms tho.

2632 Firth Sterling right in front of the sign and the tracks
This is a great documentary. However, I wish the producer/editor would have left the music out from under the spoken dialogue and lower 3rd identify the participants. That would have enhanced this important DC black historic production.
+TRONICVISION SHUT THE FUCK UP. THIS WAS GREAT. S.E. BULL
+Kev Wat No dude, I will not "SHUT THE FUCK UP"!!!! I stand by what I wrote. Deal with it.
History on Barry Farms!!! Where was these old timers at in this documentary, when the crime wave took over ward eight especially the Barry Farms community. Police, Politicians, Clergymen and women and existing residents did nothing to address the crime wave that has taken over. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. This community has been a site for sore eyes for so many years!!!!. I asked myself how can they have a parade every year in honor of Dr. MLK Jr. birthday, when people are dying in high numbers on MLK Jr. Avenue. Now there are plans to redevelop Barry Farms residents don't what the property torn down. There was no upkeep in the area, Barry Farms community is a community were all types of drugs and guns poured in and people started getting out due to the lack of attention, to what was happening to this African American Historical community. Barry Farms was not receiving the needed attention from African American politicians DC residents voted in office. Its very nice to provide history on a well known African American Historical community where African Americans did nothing to keep the riches of African American struggles rich and strong by empowering the people.
Great film. I recognize the "and n'em" of Angelo and n'em who used to frequent MLK Memorial Library. Good work fellas.
