As a Japanese person, I'd like to explain the main reasons why this game is being criticized:
1.The protagonist being Black is not the issue. Japanese audiences have not criticized works like Netflix's "Yasuke" or "Afro Samurai". As evident in numerous anime featuring protagonists with diverse appearances, Japanese viewers don't typically judge a work primarily based on a character's physical features like hair or skin color.
2.The main criticism stems from the developers implying historical accuracy where there is none. There's no historical evidence supporting Yasuke as a "legendary samurai," and it's debatable whether he was a samurai at all. Yet, the developers seem to present this as fact. Had they clearly labeled it as fiction from the start, this wouldn't have been an issue.
3.The second major concern is the apparent lack of respect for Japanese culture. Even from the trailer and concept art, there are numerous obvious errors in the depiction of scenery, architecture, kanji usage, and cultural manners. This has led to fear and anger among Japanese viewers, feeling that people unfamiliar with Japanese culture are misrepresenting it, while also portraying violence against Japanese characters.
I am Japanese and everything in your comment is false. Yasuke is a historical fact regardless of the feelings of far-right ultranationalist groups. You do not represent Japanese people. There are many Japanese people who, to this day, try to censor the Nanking Massacre as well.

Yasuke was indeed a subordinate of Oda Nobunaga, but there is no historical record that he was a samurai.Also, Yasuke surrendered without protecting Oda Nobunaga during the Honnoji Incident.He has no pride as a subordinate, and I am not a black man. if you’re basing your only evidence off of wikipedia i’m not gonna waste my breath, there’s countless accounts of “Yasuke” existing in old texts which is documented by big history organisations and authors. while his name may not have been “Yasuke”, there are many records of a dark skinned warrior serving under Oda Nobunaga who was not native to japan.

結論から言いますと、弥助は実在していたと思いますが、侍ではありませんでした。
日本の歴史の授業では、弥助は宣教師に奴隷として日本に連れてこられ、その黒い肌を面白がった信長が下級の家臣（信長の荷物を持つ係）として迎え入れることにしたと教えられます。
信長は珍しいものが大好きで、他人の頭蓋骨に金メッキを貼り付けた黄金の頭蓋骨や、西洋から伝わった地球儀などを手に入れては周囲に見せて自慢していました。
おそらく、弥助も信長のコレクションのひとつだった可能性が高いです。
また、弥助の絵が一枚だけ発見されましたが、彼はいかにも当時の西洋人の格好をしており、どう見ても侍ではありません。刀すら持っていませんでした。
弥助が戦で活躍したというなら、具体的にどの戦いでどう活躍したのか言ってみてください。言えませんよね？
だってどの文献にも弥助が戦ったなんて記述はありませんから。
信長が本能寺の変で亡くなり、弥助は明智光秀に無抵抗で降伏したことで、光秀に「この男は武士どころか人でもない、ただの獣だ」と馬鹿にして、弥助を生かしたままにしました。
もしも弥助が強くて戦で活躍していれば、生かしておいたら危ないと言って斬るか、部下に勧誘していたはずです。
そして何よりも弥助が侍ではない決定的な証拠は、彼には家名、つまり苗字が無いことです。
通常、戦で活躍した武士は主君から褒美として苗字と領地を貰えますが、弥助にはどちらもありませんでした。
なので彼が戦で活躍したことは一度も無いと断言できます。
弥助は侍で、信長に信頼されていたと勘違いしてる可哀想な人には、「でも弥助は苗字が無いよね」と言いましょう。それだけで論破できるぐらい、苗字が無いことは決定的な証拠です。
最後に、私たち日本人は今作に関して怒っている人がたくさんいますが、それは弥助が日本が舞台のゲームで主人公だからではありません。
ゲーム開発者が「弥助は実在した伝説の黒人侍」などと嘘をついて偏った思想を優先し、私たちの国の歴史を改竄しようとしてるからです。
ゲーム開発者が「弥助は本当は侍ではなくただの荷物持ちだったが、ゲームの中では侍という設定にした」と最初に言っていれば、何も問題はありませんでした。

I'd like something newer than Assassin's Creed.

@@gifcc_2424 Just because someone is black, it doesn't automatically mean it's "politically incorrect", that's not what that means. Yasuke was a mercenary, even if he was a slave, a Samurai during the Sengoku period was not a strict hereditary title like it was in the later Edo period.
During this time the definition of a Samurai was much more broad and all of the jobs Yasuke performed were exactly that performed by Samurai.
Playing as a black samurai in Japan be like:

I highly recommend. I played it for free on playstation. The graphics are amazing, the story brilliant and emtotional and the combat is always fun. Even the stealth is 100 times better than the "assasins" games
sony is tying iit to a psn account apparently so you may only be able to easily buy and keep it if you live in one of the 18 or so psn served countries

I don't see the inclusion of Yasuke an attempt at "political correctness." But rather because they saw that there was a real black person in Japan, who so happened to be a retainer of sorts, and decided to make a character out of him.
It is an interesting person with interesting circumstances, and I'm reserving judgement to see if they treat him as a character or as a tool for "political correctness."
If they do something interesting and respectful with Yasuke, then I don't care if he so happens to be black. It does not matter.
But if they suddenly try to make him "politically correct," then I will obviously dislike it.
Yasuke's depiction in this game is ultimately fiction and we should treat it as such, they certainly won't try to pretend this all happened in real life anyway.
