If any city reminds me of rougeport it's Seattle WA. Our government has let the city go to crap. It is riddles with crime and the police can't do nothing about because of the people who voted for the police to be defunded. And those same people wonder why it takes so long for the police to help or to do anything.
The town where, all within five minutes of arrival: - you have to break up a street fight - you are greeted by a noose just smack dab in the middle of the town square - you are robbed for half your life savings - you meet a guy who demands money for passage into part of town, and is perfectly willing to stab you to death with a spear if you don't comply God, I love this game.
You never know how hard this song really goes until you listen to it with headphones. I love how there's this up tempo, fast paced beat to represent the chaos and bustle of Rogueport, but this more sinister, bassy beat in the background to signify the town's ruthlessness, dangers and Mafia-adled background.
One of the most memorable locations of any Mario game, ever. Every other starting level is all sunshine and rainbows (often literally) but this games takes us to a seedy port town with a crime syndicate, a street gang, thieves, muggers, and pickpockets; heck, Mario gets half his coins swiped by a Bandit just minutes after arriving in town! Rogueport has so much more personality than Toad Town, Delfino Plaza, or even Peach's Castle. It's dirty, rustic, and dangerous, and yet it has a certain charm that I absolutely love in a Mario game. And I haven't even mentioned the ancient city buried underneath Rogueport that serves in lieu of city sewers, with the Thousand-Year Door and the Palace of Shadow at it's heart, not to mention the Pit of 100 Trials. As soon as you step off the boat, the games let you know right on the nose that you ain't in -Kansas- the Mushroom Kingdom anymore.
Not to be nitpicky, but what do you mean "even Peach's Castle", listing it AFTER Delfino Plaza as though Peach's Castle from SM64 had any character or personality to it at all, let alone enough to be placed ABOVE Delfino Plaza? Unless this is another iteration of Peach's Castle I don't know about, SM64 literally had that dumb but kinda true creepypasta going around a few years ago talking about how "every copy is personalised" because of how unsettling and empty the castle is. Delfino Plaza on the other hand, if you speak to the piantas, has so much life to it. As the game progresses you can hear different developments from lots of the characters. There's those 2 guys near the beach who are angry with each other, the guy on the island who is alone and then gets back to the mainland, and plenty others. Sunshine is a mixed bag for some people, but the hub world and honestly the worlds in general feel very alive.

U can hear the whole story of rouge port in this song. The meeting the discovery and being aware of the shady stuff happening hidding the glorious and trágic past of this land.. really feels like u are part of the story and i really cannot think in another game that made me feel like this
I always thought Rougeport is some sort of Hub world. To go to faraway place, you can either travel through pipes via Rougeport sewer, a blimp, a ship or train.
One of Yuka Tsujiyoko's few compositions for the game (also including Petal Meadows, Boggly Woods, The Great Boggly Tree, most of the boss themes, etc.) and it's arguably one of the best town themes in all of gaming.
@@SkyrushFanboy I have played Bug Fables a lot and mostly agree, though the Rogueport area is full of a great atmosphere and great lore that does top that game in a way. I do appreciate BF for having a bigger hub world though with a lot more sidequests.
I completely agree with you. I do not hate the remake version, I think it's a very good song, but it's COMPLETELY OUT OF PLACE, it's way too intense for the context it is used in. At most it can work as a battle theme, but it sounds completely out of place in Rogueport considering you are just walking around talking to NPCs doing absolutely nothing exciting

modern mario music is hella overproduced, the more subdued type of music this game had was so much more dignified but the composers have really lost interest in it

As it shouldn’t, because they’ll never be able to “recapture” the sound of the original. The original’s soundtrack, while not my personal cup of tea, aged remarkably well because of the use of electronic sounding instruments. Instead, they did the next best thing: They had Yoshito Sekigawa, the original main composer, serve as the sound director and lead composer for the remake and reimagine the entire OST with his sound team.
@@PianistTanooki I don't think the problem with this song's remix in particular is tied to the hardware limitations of the original making it sound "special", I think they just completely messed up the genre. The remix is way too intense for the context it is used in, you are just walking around in a city and talking to NPCs, doing nothing exciting or thrilling, it sounds completely out of place and does not fit what you are seeing on screen at all. It is a very good remix if taken out of context, something that I would lose my mind over if I heard it on youtube (shouout to all creators who make remixes of videogame music btw), AT MOST it can be a good battle theme, but it's not fit for its assigned role
You know I often wonder if Paper Mario will ever become a separate playable character than the usual Mario in Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, or Mario Sports games.
I forgot how this sounded, but I still like this version equally because it makes Rogueport feel like Rogueport, an innocent looking city filled with crime.

Instruments are kinda everywhere and theres no real control of the tone, compared to the classic one we have here. Feels they wanted to go an orchestral route and went overboard

People are gonna hate me for my OPINION, but I don't really like the many dialogue. It kinda makes the game boring to read that all especially for people who are doing playthroughs on Twitch or as TH-cam videos. But. Yes there's a but. The battle system is alright & the walking through the 3D areas are also alright.

I always switch the GameCube badge on in the remake to hear this, but the remake soundtrack is really spectacular too.
