  • Texas was upset by Kansas Saturday night in one of the biggest shockers of the College Football season, and on Late Kick Live Ep 204 Josh Pate discussed everything that happened in Austin this weekend and everything that has gone wrong throughout the season. With Steve Sarkisian barely settled into his new office he has a ton of issues to address. Is this the right staff to turn the ship around? Can the culture issues that currently exist be rectified by the transfer portal and recruiting? Are there deeper seeded issues than just personnel that will have to be addressed? What stood out the most to you Saturday night as Kansas beat Texas? Josh, I believe that if you're a scholarship player getting a college education (which is worth 10's of thousands of dollars), then you have NO right to drop the rope, no matter how bad the culture or how disrespected a coach is. That player should give his all, because in some sense, that player is an employee of the university for whom he plays. If he can't give 100% one hundred percent of the time, he needs to enter the transfer portal or quit playing college sports altogether.

Malcolm, glass half empty guy. Many college football players go on to earn a degree and use it to get good jobs and have productive lives. The players also have to go to class and get passing grades to play football. If you'd ever gone full time to a college you'd know there's growth, learning, maturing, and a wonderful environment for all students there including football players.

I think you forget that the top division alone (BCS or 1A) has over 120 teams with around 90 players each. Then there are hundreds more teams in the lower divisions. Between them are some 10,000 students playing college football.

Klatt, Cowherd and others agree Tom Herman ran the Texas program into the ground. Texas has not had 1 offensive player drafted in the First round since 2005. Yeah, since the Vince Young days. Texas has nothing.

@@Bamruff62 Well I can tell you for a fact there have been internal problems going on at Texas since Mack Brown last played for a NC and the results have proven that. The fact that Sark, Herman, and Strong were the guys they've landed on through the decade proves that. None of these were close to Texas' first choice. Herman is probably the only one within their top 3 choices at the time. These problems have been going on for far longer than the casual fan realizes. On the field the talent level is not nearly what the recruiting services will have you believe. I follow recruiting pretty closely and can't tell you how many times a low rated player has gotten a significant bump just before or after verbally committing to Texas. It's a complete joke. The fact that they are even in a competitive game with a team like Kansas proves the talent level is not there. They have whiffed on both sides of the trenches for a decade+. Sark coming in and trying to play Bama ball won't change that, and if you think they're having problems now, the SEC is going to magnify that problem.

    • @charlesshankle3178
      @charlesshankle3178 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Bamruff62 Cowherd, Klatt are correct in regards to Texas. There were very serious problems before Sarkisian got there that were created and exacerbated by Herman. Herman had to go. The rebuilding, re-tooling and building a culture will take a good bit of time. UT may be getting this right by going with someone that came from a program with one of the biggest winners in history. At minimum, they compete for a Natty even win they don't win them. Herman spoke of alignment. But, the missing element was development of players and personnel. Sarkisian is trying to bring process, accountability and development to a program that hasn't had it in a long time. So the best thing that can happen is to let Sark have his chance, let him clean out the undisciplined players and other malcontents. Let him establish a process and culture.

Coach Aranda for Baylor won 2 games in his first year at Baylor. And now there record is 5-2, and if Baylor keeps winning they may have a shot at the big 12 championship. All I’m saying is Don’t blow up the bridge just yet. It’s amazing what one year can do four a team. When you allow Kansas to hang 57 points on you, it's time to shut down the football program. People who grew up in the state of Texas knows, the University of Texas has a culture problem. The student body are arrogant, pretentious, condescending, soft and entitled. They aren't hungry to get better. A school like Texas, with it's money and talent, should have 15 national titles by now. When you are consistently recruiting 4-5 Start athletes, and losing to schools like Iowa State, TCU and now Kansas, who consistently are signing 2-3 Star athletes, then you have a culture problem that won't get fixed by simply changing coaching staffs. TCU is 8-4 against Texas since joining the Big 12, Iowa State has won 3 straight against Texas; Even Kansas State is 10-11 against Texas all time.

Texas had some great offense AT TIMES, but couldn’t adjust in the second quarter. Texas has a bunch of 5 star recruits who are asking “what can Texas do for me?” While Oklahoma State has a bunch of 3 star recruits and transfers asking “what can I do for O-State?”. Better check the water in Austin after the big freeze, because Texas getting beat by Kansas in Austin is a whole new level of weird for Austin.

Texas does have a culture problem, but the bad culture isn’t coming from the locker room; it’s coming from the big money boosters who insist on micromanaging every aspect of this program and from the school and local media that talks these kids up like they are on the same level with Bama, Ohio St., and Clemson. You can bring in really good, humble, hard working kids but if all they ever hear is how great they are and how it’s their God given birthright to win football games, eventually they’re gonna believe it.

For so long, the conference coddled them and ensured that everything went their way to protect the “brand.” Now that they’ve been spited by their own darlings, that protection has run out and what you are seeing is what should have been happening all along. Games called fairly, non-favorable spots at critical moments and consequently losses in conference play for Texas. IMO the culture problem with Texas is that In their locker room they claim to be Texas. Meaning what ever Texas has done in the past, this football team feels like they’re grandfathered in to that success and intimidation that Texas used to give previous opponents. When in reality they deserve nothing that a previous Texas team has been able to accomplish. Every season they’re is something to prove for every team no matter how many Nattys the coach has won in the past. That’s why Saban is the best. He clearly reminds his new teams about that every year.

The Texas hype and the people that say “Sark is the greatest thing since sliced bread” had a reality check.
Texas could have NFL caliber players and still find a way to blow it.
Then they have apologists like this guy go on a media run and try to explain why and dissect it.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard the term “did they lose for the right reasons?” What a farce.
And I love every single minute of it LOLOL.

Sark never did well in his previous HC jobs even with great resources like USC. The question was, did he turn around in the Saban coaching rehabilitation clinic or was his success largely because of some of the greatest Alabama players in school history. He did call a great game in last year's NC, but a good OC still doesn't mean good HC.

In my opinion, this all started with the Longhorn Network. Texas forming their own network rather than supporting a Big 12 Network lead to some of the better teams leaving the conference. Once the conference was weakened, the remaining teams began to weaken. The Big 12 is little more than a mid-major conference. It will take years for Texas and Oklahoma to be competitive the SEC.

As an arkansas fan I thought the win over texas ment something, I was wrong. Look texas,... I can not express enough to you the sheer importance of football in the SEC. If you rated the top 10 coaches in college football. 7 would be in the SEC. L.S.U. Won a national championship 2 years ago. The coach just got fired. I think Oklahoma gets it. But texas, come on. Let me explain it to you this way.... In a way the city of Austin, Texas will understand. You are a B level movie star, And you just got your first invitation to the Grammy Awards. You better put on your best suit, and show up big because all the stars will be present. And if you think this example is far off?.... just wait till you show up to your first SEC media days. And all the pretty important people just walk right past you, to there table up front.

Texas changes coaches like the winds in a tornado. How can they expect to build a program when their alumni demand and get a new coach every 2-3 years? Answer - they can’t and wont till they admit how mediocre they have become in the past decade and then stay committed to a leader in good times and bad. YES they have a culture problem.
