That's exactly how I've been flushing my black tank for years. Set a timer and repeat until it's clear. I finally broke down and bought a flow meter, but I'm with you.
A couple of suggestions if not said before. Always do the BLACK water tank first so the GRAY water contents will do some what of a job cleaning the drain hose. After the BLACK water tank is empty, put a little water back in tank and add one of the soap/deodorant "pods" to the tank. As you move, the water will slosh around and do just a little more to keep any remaining stuff from drying up.
We have a 38 gallon black I dump then close valve and backflush with the same water meter you use I start with putting 10 gallons in then dump tank then close valve again then put 20 gallons in dump again then close valve again then do 30 gallons dump again close valve then add 7 gallons to make sure we have water in it to start using again
My wife and I have been camping for only 2 years. After 6 months of part time traveling I started cleaning my black tank same way you guys do. I fill the tank 3/4 full sometimes twice after I drain the tank until the water is somewhat clear. Works great!
The ZZ Top song is actually about a brothel outside the town of La Grange. Back when rock and roll songs were rock and roll songs...all about drugs, women, or alcohol. Or all three. LOL.
FYI: "La Grange" is a song by the American rock group ZZ Top, from their 1973 album Tres Hombres. One of ZZ Top's most successful songs, it was released as a single in 1973 and received extensive radio play, rising to No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1974.[4] The song refers to a brothel on the outskirts of La Grange, Texas (later called the "Chicken Ranch"). The brothel is also the subject of the Broadway play and film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
I have a Save A Drop meter as well. I run it into a 5 gallon bucket occasionally to make sure it is still calibrated. I had a different brand of meter previously that failed and wasn't reading correctly.
Hi Cody I have that rhino flush valve and a water meter and refill my tank about 20 gallons per 3 times until the waters clean been doing it for 12 years now mind you I’m not full time have a great weekend
Good to see 80,000 trouble free miles with the 7.3. We got ours in August and will hit 20,000 this weekend. I’ll have to check but we’ve got to be pushing 11,000 towing our 35’ Brinkley fifth wheel. Like you, I keep it maintained to the t. Your videos are enjoyable to watch without all of the sponsorship ads. Thank you for that.
Every few times that we dump I do a similar thing. I don't set a timer however , I just refuse to leave the valve until I stop the water and dump. No wrong or right. We used to use the Motorola talkies but got tired of the static so made the switch to GMRS type radios, so much quieter. Have a great weekend.
It's not a how to, it's how we do it. Perfect response. I swear, some people will disagree if you say the sky is blue. Isaac: You're a train, what are you going to steer? 🤣 Too funny! Appreciate the time and effort y'all put into these vids and allowing us to join your journey, don't change a thing. Thank you C & A!
I did the black tank flush and I got distracted and let me tell you it did not exit on the roof. All I heard was my wife screaming as it all came back up through the toilet. Unfortunately I didn’t get it shut off for a few minutes and it poured out of the underbelly as well.
Glad you addressed it. Looks like fun times. Yummy food, game playing, including the dog. LOL. We like our walkie talkies, love the no delay. I just have to remember to hold the button in, then talk. lol. Time together with family is always so great. 😀- Michelle
Haha! Did you learn the button holding from our PA video? 🤣🤣We we’re SO tired on a trip and we just weren’t functioning well, with the basic stuff…like using walkies. 🤣
I flush mine with a rhino blaster with a save a drop water meter four to five times every time I know how many gallons my tank is and I usually fill it roughly 2/3 full and dump I have yet to have any issues. but like you said you have to keep an eye on things. Like the old saying goes "everybody is entitled to their own opinion" I paraphrased that to keep it clean lol
I have also used the same method to clean our black tank without issue. I believe the warning label is to absolve the manufacturer of any wrongdoing for those owners that aren’t as responsible.
Another great video...I flush our tank like you do. And we love the bourbon part of Kentucky, and I also got one of those bottles of Knobb Creek 9 and even got it layered etched....They do a great tour there.
Love watching you guys every week!! And Cody is exactly right about the black tank flush, perfect explanation on how it's done, it's the same way I do it!! Works every time. Also enjoyed the Jim Beam tour! Thanks y'all for sharing your adventure! Look forward to the next one!!!
As for dumping the tank, I've actually had a few discussions with a few folks in parks. I flush the same way you do. Theres an easy way to debunk the argument: when they are done "flushing", have them set a 1 minute timer, SHUT the black valve, and then open it in a minute while they watch what comes out. Never fails to educate by experience. I personally do 3 minute flushes, and I loathe factory flushes. If I buy a new rv or have to replace my black ta k in the future, its getting a camco tornado. FitRV did a video a few years back with a clear black tank he made just to show how different things work.
I did not open my black tank valve when I flushed my class A Coachmen the 1st time . Wife quickly hollered out we had water everywhere in bathroom. Do appreciate your videos but I'm keeping my valve open 😂. Safe travels RC from Havelock, NC
I use a timer, but I think the gallon meter is a better idea since my gauge always reads 3/4 full. Seems like with a 40 gallon tank it would be safe to even go to 20 gallons.
We use walkie talkie for setting up also. TIP, have Angie position herself so you can see her in your mirrors, my wife was out of site and the walkie talkie failed to transmit, I almost backed into a tree. Safe travels, keep up the good work.
I never flush the tank with the valve open. The person who made that comment, pounding on the table screaming this way or no way. Is incorrect. You absolutely use the flush to fill and soak the tank. I repeat the process several times until it clear. Literally CLEAR. I’ve learned how long it takes to get a workable water levels in the tank. I ask my wife to monitor the levels from inside and maintain a visual on the toilet. Never had a problem. Kentucky is on our bucket list especially the bourbon trail
I do the same thing as you setting a timer, but I will never leave the dump valve while I’m waiting on the timer. I just don’t want to risk it. Thanks for the video.
The song refers to a JA GRANGE brothel on the outskirts of La Grange, Texas (later called the "Chicken Ranch"). The brothel is also the subject of the Broadway play and film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. "La Grange" French 7" single. Single by ZZ Top.
Always enjoy our videos. I'll make a couple of comments. On the gas over diesel pickup, I did due diligence on researching the differences on gas versus diesel when I bought my 1999 Ford F250V10 to pull my new Holiday Rambler Alumascape fifth wheel. I had the fifth wheel installed by an old and trusted local custom welding shop and in accordance with my wants it worked beautifully! I never ran out of an abundance of pulling power in the mountains, could make tight turns and it pulled level and with ease. I also used the clear coupler when dumping first my black tank, then flushed with gray water until there was no more yucky stuff in the hose. I also ran a few gallons of fresh water in my black tank when traveling so it would slosh around and hopefully help loosen up any residual left. I did exactly the same when I later bought a class A.
I drain my 50 gallon black tank completely then watch my water meter and fill it back up with 50 gallon's and drain it again and keep repeating these step's until the water going through the clear elbow is running clean until empty then I stop and just put 15 gallon's in the tank and let that splash around on the way home and then drain that out as soon as I unhook and level and my fifth wheel is 4 years old and all sensor's work fine. 👍👍
There's always someone who knows it all. I don't always comment, I just listen and learn. Everyone has their own way of doing things. Always watch ur videos, keep um coming.
Excellent job explaining how the black tank flush works and how to flush the black tank. I (Joel) am an RV tech who uses a valtera flush king for the grey tank as well so you can get that a little cleaner as well.
I use a wand, that attaches to the hose. I stick it down the toilet, and it spins. It cleans from top down. It breaks things up, and sends it down while the valve is open. No mess, and no chance of overflow. And it was cheep. Also it ill remove a pyramid if you have that problem. This tool is available anywhere you buy your stinky slinky. It is about 5ft long and Also works in 5th wheel rigs.
@@RVUntethered I am starting a channel in a couple weeks. I will feature it and show how it works. Best thing I have found to rinse the black tank it's not just a stream that is installed on newer campers.
My guess on your question about ZZ Top would be the song is about Lagrange Texas. That is where they are from. 🤷♀️ I do not know that for a fact. We love to watch you guys. Keep it up.
We have a travel trailer and have watched, read, and been part-time RVers traveling since 2017. You are doing the right way!! We had a smell problem several years ago . We figured out to prevent the poop pyramid and consequent smell after dumping ,using the meter, put five to seven gallons of water back into the black tank.
Thank you for your videos. My wife and I really enjoy the info you share. We are still in the planning/dreaming phase and look forward to your content. Thank you.
We feel very familiar with your current travels. We both are graduates of the University of Kentucky and have recently camp hosted in White Oak Landing north of Clifton TN. We spent a couple nights while camp hosting in Linden TN at their 911 center as a storm shelter. Last July we left full timing and bought a home in Adamsville TN(Former home of Buford Pusser, Walking Tall Sheriff). Thanks for another great video.
Wow Adamsville is my hometown I have lived an went to school there an left for a while in the military an now I am back just across the river in Savannah lol. I was just there today doing a military funeral at the Adamsville graveyard. Welcome the the town I love it
Try using the Kleen Tank mixture to keep your black tank clean. 1 cup Calgon bath beads 40 oz Pine Sol then finish filling a gallon jug. When you mix the Calgon and Pine Sol it will foam let it settle and fill the gallon jug. Empty the black tank and add a cup or two and make sure you let it get full before you dump. You can also use it in the gray tanks. If you don’t believe me look it up on TH-cam.
Cody, your frank but friendly address about the comment incident was 1000 times better, a 1000 times less emotionally charged than I could have ever have delivered. Well done Sir.
The song is about La Grange TEXAS. Tiny little town with a history related to the bean war. The song was about the Chicken Ranch. Immortalized in the Dolly Parton movie Best Little Whore House in Texas.
Love that you were here. We live in Lagrange and love it. Glad you did too. It would have been nice to meet you two. We really enjoy your videos. Glad to see you covered the town and saw the great shops downtown.
Not a full timer. When we get home after a trip I hook up the black tank flush and fill the tank up by holding down the flush pedal and look down the drain of the toilet until the water enters the drain pipe just below the flap. I do this three times until the water runs clear. When finished, with the water off I look down the toilet drain into the tank with a flashlight and the bottom of the tank is clean. Water is your friend. Safe travels and good health.
Yes! Their wifi wasn’t terrible, but Cody’s VPN wouldn’t pull it. Thankfully they were able to move us. We just didn’t think it would be such a problem. It IS a great park!
On our last trip while doing the tug test it resulted in my learning that I wasn’t fully hitched! I am so thankful I did the tug test and had the landing gear low enough to arrest the fall without damage to truck or camper! Catastrophe avoided!
Other TH-cam channels of full-time RVer’s talk about frame flex and other manufacturing issues have been getting cease and desist letters from the maker of these products coming from their lawyers. Just something to be aware of Lol
We agree with your method for flushing the black tank. We always flush the tank by filling via the black tank flush on our class A. It usually takes two flushes for clear water with no particles. We have been doing this for over 30 years. With that said, if we know we are going to travel to another location where we can dump, we fill the black tank via the flush connection to about 3/4. The sloshing around during the drive to the next location does a pretty good job of cleaning the walls and hence we had never had a sensor issue in either of our class As. Please note, that we might not have same concern about weight capacity due to the extra liquid on board. We also use Motorola radios. We have had the same set of 5 radios since 2012. The kids use to carry them when they went exploring or to the park (before they had cell phones). They are still going strong.
@@RVUntethered I agree. It seems they do not make them like that anymore. The rechargeable battery packs in three of the radios no longer charge (2 still charge just fine), however, they radios will also work on AAA batteries.
I have flushed my black tank as you do. The amount of air displaced by the incoming water is less than the amount of air that can go through the black tank vent, thus the tank won’t over pressurize. I use a flow meter and an alarm on my watch to ensure I will not overflow the tank.
When we were traveling, I’d put water in the emptied black tank until it was, maybe half full and it would slosh around while we drove. Then dump it again when we arrived.
Have you guys got to tour Jack Daniels? I used to take our college interns to JD in Lynchburg frequently. It's a cool tour. The grain company I work for used to supply approx. 75% of the grain to Jack Daniels, and I became pretty good friends with the Safety Director at Jack Daniels just before the companies decided to do different things and we sold all of our Grain elevators in Tennessee! Also, a Squire! :-) Great video, we are planning a Kentucky travel trip sometime in the near future.
Your black tank flush advice was spot on , I have a fifth wheel with a 39 gallon black tank and I usually just stand by and monitor the tank level indicator, so far this method hasn’t failed me , but I plan on purchasing a flow meter for accuracy. I have watched other RVers use the same methods that you have suggested 👍🏽 . Thanks for the great content .
I like the idea of plugging into the inverter,a second battery would make it for a weekend easily. As for the black tank I do the exact same thing with no problem.
Cody, I do exactly what you do with the black tank and have for years with my Reflection. Sometimes on travel day I leave about ten gallons of water in it with some chemical and let it slosh around until the next stop where I can dump again and you’d be surprised what else comes out. We visited Jim Beam a few years ago as well! Did you notice all the black soot like material on some of the buildings and trees when you were there? They don’t like to talk about it anymore but I was told it’s a byproduct of the distilling process. Very interesting. Anyway another great video, safe travels you guys…

I have always shut down my dump value on the black tank. Most of the time I will fill and dump the tank 3 to 4 times. So far no clogs or

Hehe! 🤭
I totally agree and use the same method as you do, it’s all about paying attention and not getting distracted.
Right!
I totally agree with you ! I clean my tank just like you do. It’s the ONLY way I can get it clean.

You must have missed the warning label the manufacture puts next to the flush connection.
You do have that label, right?
We don’t have a label next to ours. I wonder if it is a different setup, that would cause it to be an issue.
Uuuggh! That’s terrible!
Haters gonna hate. You handled the issue very well. I flush the black tank similar to your method. I don’t see how any other method would do anything.

Happy 80K miles!🎉 Here's to another 80K miles in safety and happiness, God's willing.🙏🏾
Yes! Thank you!
👍
I do the same thing with my Jayco. I also use a flow meter and monitor how much water is going back in the tank.
👍
Thank you for your videos. My wife and I really enjoy the info you share. We are still in the planning/dreaming phase and look forward to your content. Thank you.
How exciting! It can come faster than you think, but I will tell you that ‘dreaming’ about our full time lifestyle, got me through some crummy days! 😊
La Grange, Texas...."rumor spreadin round in that Texas town" as ZZTop is a Texas band. 😊
😁😁
We feel very familiar with your current travels. We both are graduates of the University of Kentucky and have recently camp hosted in White Oak Landing north of Clifton TN. We spent a couple nights while camp hosting in Linden TN at their 911 center as a storm shelter. Last July we left full timing and bought a home in Adamsville TN(Former home of Buford Pusser, Walking Tall Sheriff).
Thanks for another great video.
Oh wow!
Wow Adamsville is my hometown I have lived an went to school there an left for a while in the military an now I am back just across the river in Savannah lol. I was just there today doing a military funeral at the Adamsville graveyard. Welcome the the town I love it
I do the same thing when flushing my black tank
👍
love watching you guys, You keep it real!
Thank you! ☺️
I’ve seen this before and everyone seems to like it. I may give it a shot!
Unfortunately my rv doesn’t have a black tank flush so I take a water hose and spray into the tank from the toilet no issues so far!
That works!
❤ u guys, thanks 4 caring ❤
☺️
Great family time trip. Glad you made it through the storms.
Yes! It was so nice! 😊
Cody, your frank but friendly address about the comment incident was 1000 times better, a 1000 times less emotionally charged than I could have ever have delivered. Well done Sir.
Ha! Thanks!
Thanks for the great video one question the campground is this the same one the Kevin and Alecia stayed at. Hope y’all are doing good. Safe journey’s.
Yes! We realized that it was the same, after we got there and asked them. 😂 It was a nice park!
The song is about La Grange TEXAS. Tiny little town with a history related to the bean war. The song was about the Chicken Ranch. Immortalized in the Dolly Parton movie Best Little Whore House in Texas.
That’s so funny! I think I just never understood the words! 😆
@@RVUntethered Give it a listen again. You will hear it now! ;)
I always flush the BT and back flow with meter. Easy to add the 5 gallons or so after all done too. Take care and stay safe!
Perfect! Thank you!
Love that you were here. We live in Lagrange and love it. Glad you did too. It would have been nice to meet you two. We really enjoy your videos. Glad to see you covered the town and saw the great shops downtown.
It was a cute town! I wish that we had a bit more time there. The daytime would have been nice. ☺️
Yes, right! Thank you!
Thanks for this nice trip !
Cummins Ferry RV Park.. love that park! We used park wifi without any issue (it's Starlink). But we're also not working. Keep up your videos!
Yes! Their wifi wasn’t terrible, but Cody’s VPN wouldn’t pull it. Thankfully they were able to move us. We just didn’t think it would be such a problem.
It IS a great park!
I flush my tank the same way you do Cody sometimes it takes a few times but it does the trick
Nice!
On our last trip while doing the tug test it resulted in my learning that I wasn’t fully hitched! I am so thankful I did the tug test and had the landing gear low enough to arrest the fall without damage to truck or camper! Catastrophe avoided!
Yes! Good!!
Other TH-cam channels of full-time RVer’s talk about frame flex and other manufacturing issues have been getting cease and desist letters from the maker of these products coming from their lawyers. Just something to be aware of Lol
Thankfully that isn’t something that we have had to deal with!
Nice video. Good information about black tank water cleaning, in tank sprayer.
Thank you!
La Grange, Texas
Oh wow! I would say that is a pretty good run on some radios! I bet you can't get any to last that long any more!
@@RVUntethered I agree. It seems they do not make them like that anymore. The rechargeable battery packs in three of the radios no longer charge (2 still charge just fine), however, they radios will also work on AAA batteries.
Thank you
That’s the same way I clean my black tank! Turd Mountain! 😂🤣😂 We are going to call out a few comments ourselves! Safe travels guys!
Haha!
the song La Grange is about La Grange Texas
Ahhh! 🤣🤣We are learning that there are a bunch of them!
Absolutely correct!!!
Regarding what comments you get I just have one thing to say. YOU DO YOU!
I have flushed my black tank as you do. The amount of air displaced by the incoming water is less than the amount of air that can go through the black tank vent, thus the tank won’t over pressurize. I use a flow meter and an alarm on my watch to ensure I will not overflow the tank.
Thank you!
When we were traveling, I’d put water in the emptied black tank until it was, maybe half full and it would slosh around while we drove. Then dump it again when we arrived.
There ya go! 👍
"No Isaac! Put it down." 😂
😆
You two are the best! safe travels
Awe thanks!
Or La Grange, Texas
😁
Have you guys got to tour Jack Daniels? I used to take our college interns to JD in Lynchburg frequently. It's a cool tour.
The grain company I work for used to supply approx. 75% of the grain to Jack Daniels, and I became pretty good friends with the Safety Director at Jack Daniels just before the companies decided to do different things and we sold all of our Grain elevators in Tennessee! Also, a Squire! :-)
Great video, we are planning a Kentucky travel trip sometime in the near future.
Nice! No, that was the only tour that we took, due to timing, but I think a barrel tour would be neat! Rickery Tour??
Your black tank flush advice was spot on , I have a fifth wheel with a 39 gallon black tank and I usually just stand by and monitor the tank level indicator, so far this method hasn’t failed me , but I plan on purchasing a flow meter for accuracy. I have watched other RVers use the same methods that you have suggested 👍🏽 . Thanks for the great content .
Thank you!
I like the idea of plugging into the inverter,a second battery would make it for a weekend easily. As for the black tank I do the exact same thing with no problem.
It has worked pretty well! We pushed it too hard on our Arkansas trip, but we knew we were doing it at the time . Now we know where the line is at.
Yes, our guide actually mentioned why they paint the buildings black, which is due to the crud on the walls. We found that interesting too! 😊
The ZZ Top song La Grange was about a brothel in La Grange, Texas.
😆
I 100% flush my black tank like you do!
Thanks!
Lagrange is like Greenville: just about every state has a Greenville and a Lagrange. I live 30 miles from Lagrange, NC.
Im starting to think you’re right! Ha!
