      Dave Farrow has a variety of numbering systems. The Major method from the Magnetic Memory Method is by far the best!!! I like how you converse it over to the playing card as well

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM

      Yes, I have one of his other systems in the competition guidebook, but didn't want to get off into the weeds on it or even talk about the approach he describes there without asking his permission first.
      I might learn it one of these days and see how it compares. But the key thing is that our conversation gave me ways that have improved my card memorization and digit memorization overall ever since. Even if you lose at a competition, you win just by getting to hang out and talk shop with the pros.

    I'm reading your book "Smarter" and it is a great tool to put all this in action. It's serving to organize the info of you're videos to me, so when I read about a topic on the book, I search on your channel for a video on the same topic, then I understand the video much more, since I already read in the book, I am really liking, already used memory palace, but now making my PAO lists and 00-99 PAO list too, it makes really really easier to create images, compared to free association I was doing, I used to make an images for my memory palaces in 5 to 10 minutes when information was more abstract or complex, but now I can create it in a minute or less using the alhpabet and the PAO lists. I'm looking forward to see my improvements with the 00-99 PAO.

    Personally, I use the hard C sound as k=7 in the major memory system. I keep only the soft C sound for use as C = zero. If makes for less mental distraction and stress for me to separate them by sound instead placing both sounds on the same image. Once I made the decision to separate the sounds it has never been an issue. Others may well find using the hard C as zero not to be a problem at all. That's the beauty of it. What ever works and feels natural for you is what you should use.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I actually use hard C too, but never think about it as being hard C for some reason. Maybe because I know German and I use die Kaverne sometimes for 78 instead Cave in English.
      But you’re absolutely right that the beauty of the system is its adaptability. It’s the core concept that matters and makes it work. 🙏

    A really big challenge I face is taking notes on mental images. How could I record the mental image to use with Anki, for example? I think the difficulty of recording is the major Achilles' heel of the method of loci, Memory Palace, Major System, PAO System, etc.

      Thanks for checking this on out.
      If you search my blog, you'll find a whole tutorial on using the Magnetic Memory Method in combination with Anki.
      I don't know exactly what you mean by "recording," but in terms of being able to memorize in real time, I wouldn't call that an Achilles' heal. Rather, an unwillingness to capture information using various recordings, then extract the info worth remembering for memorization is a weakness in the user.
      But since free will does not exist, it is not even that. It just is what is and some of us our lucky enough to train and use these techniques for what they are without thinking inert things and processes have weaknesses. Only we humans can fall prey to that. Possibly later, our bots.
      But for now, let us love B.O.T.S.: Boring old technology succeeding. Those who can get past blaming the tools will do just that: Succeed.

      And then I learned to 100 (daisies) d s s
      I’m kinda wondering if these weird AI Midjourney videos could be used to show people what our minds eye sees
      Have you explored this ?
      I’m considering doing a month of image generation with Gen 3 Runway ML or Luma or w/e
      And I am also trying to memorize Pi using a visual flow into the next word/peg
      Having some luck having ChatGPT read me the “story” of Pi
      Thank you for putting such valuable training out there - much appreciated !!!

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Thanks for these details about your journey and this question.
      I have thought a lot about AI for many years, and the old debates between artificial and natural memory in the ancient books, back when people thought imagined mnemonics were not "natural," etc.
      Some of this I unfold here in a full discussion of so-called "virtual" Memory Palaces:
      th-cam.com/video/myN7wCWDWCI/w-d-xo.html
      I don't think my brain is strong enough to describe, let alone resolve the true contradiction (dialetheism) I see going on here. Nonetheless, I've decided for myself to limit exposure to such tools, emphasis on "limit."
      Part of the reason is that it would probably be pretty cool if someone like me was stubborn enough to do it. And another part being that we have no evidence so far that anyone has done something significant by prepping or training with these tools yet.
      In fact, it's quite the opposite, I think (but am not sure). I believe the recent innovations in the Shadow actually point us even deeper into auto-training/inner mnemonic systems without "external" assistance.
      So perhaps the best thing to do would be to ask Lance Tschirhart himself. I asked him about being on the podcast many years ago, but somehow we never got around to it. I'll reach out again and see if I can finally close the loop. I think he'd be the perfect person to ask.
      In the meantime, I'm working on the sequel to Flyboy which is a fictional response to some of these issues with some reference to the logical issues raised by Lewis Carrol. But I'm not sure if it will provide any answers in terms of how or if such generative exposure will help people in terms of practically sitting down and training to apply memory techniques in situation where they have no recourse to computers.
      It's definitely a super interesting topic, so thanks for the prompt to explore it more and I hope my video on virtual Memory Palaces is useful for thinking through the implications of using these technologies even if there is no definitive answer that I can offer thus far.

    • @sterlingcooley7401
      @sterlingcooley7401 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@AnthonyMetivierMMM Wow - well I'm honored and privileged to behold a response as well thought as this. I will think more on this, digest.
      I already am finding my exposure on X to AI generated "trippy and flowing" videos has already had a tendency to influence my visualizations, so it's "memetic" that is for sure... I find, however, that if i don't see it for a day or so, my mind's eye returns to standard again.
      I first learned the Major system on an old cassette tape, without any "visual" cues and I learned it just fine like that. I certainly can see where using too many visuals to help someone train would negatively impact their ability, what a strange paradox!
      Maybe I will offer my mind as a "quarantined" test box, I still desire to try to some degree. haha if I don't write anything on this in 10 months time, send help! haha :P Thanks Anthony !!!

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That is so interesting, and possibly the answer for the fadeout effect is in the memory science. Visual memory and especially iconic memory/figural memory probably hold clues.
      But it also just makes sense, as on a common sense level we can easily imagine an artist who no longer visits galleries to regularly feed the muse or a writer stops reading fiction winds up deskilling...
      The other angle to consider is that mnemonics are not entirely or even for some people visual at all. In the memory competition setting, there really isn't time to visualize. There's something else going on.
      That doesn't mean to avoid visualization, but in my own experience and lots of anecodotal discussions, looking at mental images isn't really going on during mnemonic encoding...
      But by the same token, it can be and being as visual as possible can be striking in a way that triggers recall.
      It's not guaranteed though. I rarely see images, but one time that I did was while giving a memory demonstration. I was being interviewed on a podcast where the hosts actually came to my studio and asked me to memorize some cards. Around the 15th card or so suddenly I had the most visual experience of my life up to that point.
      But during recall, for the life of me, I couldn't memorize that card even though it was an insanely intense visual experience. I can't quite explain why it would have had an inverse effect, but it did, and even though I recalled all the other cards, I naturally beat myself up more than a little over the days to come... and was completely perplexed given the visual experience.
      I tell the story here closer to the time it happened and how bizarre it was:
      th-cam.com/video/y0Z88TSKejw/w-d-xo.html
      Anyhow, since your last post, I've reached out to Lance and hopefully he and I can trade notes on these matters and create something cool for the community to consider further about this strange "coincidentia oppositorum"!
      Or should that be "unio oppositorum"?...
