- According to China, Uighurs and other ethnic minorities who have been detained in so-called "re-education camps" have been released. Xinjiang's regional chairman Shohrat Zakir said in a December 9 news conference that those who participated in "training courses" have "achieved stable employment with the help of the government".
The UN and human rights groups, though, say China continues to hold more than 1 million people in mass detention camps designed to suppress Muslim identity and build loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party.
China’s recent media offensive follows investigative reporting that confirmed the government's strategy of detaining mainly Muslim ethnic minorities even though they had not committed any crimes. Last month, The New York Times and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists published their reporting along with leaked Chinese government documents detailing the detention and surveillance methodology in Xinjiang. Beijing continues to reject the accusation and insists the camps offer voluntary job training and other education programmes meant to combat what it calls "extremism".
In this episode, we'll hear from journalists on the latest news from Xinjiang and the challenges in covering the story.

If you frame the question to Chinese officials on the context of human rights violation - you will get the same boilerplate response. From what I can tell based on their foreign press secretary response is that yes there are most likely innocents are being swept up in these camps. It's the alternative compared to summary executions by bombing the region. I personally think it's a gross human rights violation to any innocent Uighurs who have been detained. Do you know what one of the main reasons Facebook was banned in China? Those terror attacks in late 2000s was organised via FB and the company refuse to do anything about it. Just like the recent NZ terror was organised and then streamed live for a global audience.
Now the assault on the Muslim religion in general, mainstream media should be ashamed of themselves. Ignoring the fact wahhabism has infiltrated or allowed into mosques all over the US and middle East. People who are swept up by narrative mainstream media are no longer able to tell the difference between fact, opinion, or false reporting altogether. Again I'm not condoning the Chinese gov on their actions in Xinjiang. I think you will better serve your viewers and apply the same efforts you put in investigating those who have been arrested to the millions of Uighurs who avoided these camps. It may not obsolve the government at all, but it should offer a more objective view than you currently did in this segment. NYT is not credible. Assume they only report half of a story - the half that fits their narrative. I do not personally know of any Muslims (in Canada) who behave like what the media loves to report, including you

A very bias attempt in reporting at best. All invited speakers are one sided. China has 56 different races/ethnic groups. Of these, the very basic question of why the Uighur at Xinjiang are threaded differently had never been asked. Why no mention of Guantanamo camp as comparison?
The fact is there had been large scale terrorist activities and distractions in Xinjiang by Uighur people. Such activities must be contained. You can argue about how it should be done, and each person will has his/her idea. The point is a balanced report will allow both sides to establish sufficient trust to come to terms about the means to and end.

"Ughurs are being forced to learn Chinese" - (a) Ughurs are also citizen of China thus it is required for them to understand/communicate in the official language, (b) there is no science and engineering education in Ughurs language but Chinese, thus learning Chinese is a must to start off and be able to participate in the modern China development.
2.
