I had a boxed set of some great VW pieces conducted by Hickox, including this, but one day I neglected to lock my car and somebody swiped it. The set is no longer available. This performance was and is one of my favorites in the set.
Vaughan Williams' skill as an orchestrator really comes to the fore in this magical piece! I honestly think he equals Ravel for mastery of the form. Haven't heard "Old King Cole" for ages, and never this reading by Hickox so the upload has been a pleasant surprise! I love every moment but, during this listen, I was struck by the slightly unusual variation on the melody at 1:58-3:58.....

At least that someone had good taste in music. Try around some of the used record joints you may be able to find a copy.
Superb in every aspect. Thanks

Yes--amazing harmonization and mood!
"Ballet for orchestra"? That's interesting. Does that mean that it was written for a ballet, or was he just being creative with the title?
It WAS intended to be a ballet, but it can be either a Ballet or it can be played by just the orchestra... if I'm making any sense here.
