- This concerto was written in 1944, for the oboist Leon Goossens and was first performed in Liverpool that year, the scheduled London premier having been cancelled due to German bombing. This performance is by Robin Canter, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Judd. Referring to the closing bars of the third movement, the Vaughan Williams scholar, Dr Michael Kennedy, said of this work: "Very little of VW's music is nostalgic, but here he seems to be yearning for some lost and precious thing. Characteristically, he has put what are some of his most intimate longings into a work which has generally been overlooked. For a few bars the veil is torn aside." Most listeners will be able to identify the bars Dr Kennedy is referring to.

I have yet to hear a Ralph VAUGHAN WILLIAMS piece that I did not love. He takes my soul to a beautiful place of contentment! I want to 'jump into' the piece and absorb every nuance, aaah!

Further to my comment below of 4 years ago, and after writing to the Director of BBC Proms, this concerto was included in the 2022 Prom program. A victory for the little guy.
My favourite composer of all time! He encompasses everything that is related to this Sceptred Isle. He transcends time and space with his ethereal pieces of pure genius and evokes such feelings of nostalgia for a time that once was and will never be again.

It is that piece of England that is no more, that place just around the corner, yet out of reach. Occasionally when visiting those small country towns you can sometimes feel it’s echo in quiet corners. It’s place of less urgency of peace and true goodwill.

+Marcus Hicks When I first heard a recording of this piece, my thought was that surely only that particular oboist and that particular conductor could possibly make it sound as it did. The music seemed utterly unique and personal.
I love this piece so much and have always wanted to play it, so I've been playing the oboe for about a month now and can play most of the first movement! :D
@Ralph Dratman: It was written, I think, with Leon Goossens in mind, whose virtuosic ability RWV was well acquainted with. So, yeah, you're absolutely right. Good observation!
That finale is gorgeous. I hope you are able to perform it one day. One of my favorite RVW works.
The finale is by far the hardest. I believe its in 3/4 time, but 1 beat to the bar.

I was in attendance a year or so ago for a performance of the Vaughan Williams Oboe Concerto by the Cleveland Orchestra, with Sir Andrew Davis conducting and the CO's Principal Oboe, Frank Rosenwein, soloist. While I thought I was pretty familiar with RVW's music, I didn't know this piece at all, and fell in love with it that night. I bought a recording of it within days, and have played it often. A thank you to the Cleveland Orchestra for introducing it to me, and to Maestro Davis, Mr. Rosenwein, and the players for making it unforgettable.
My Beloved and I would lie together, holding hands and listening to this beautiful music with our eyes closed…the best way to enjoy music with someone you love. He introduced me to all of this composer’s music…it brings back so many beautiful memories…
RVW composed some of the most beautifully serene music ever written. It always takes me to a peaceful place.
R.V.W. is an absolute master of English music .I love all of his music , but this has a special place !...it's where I can drift off and recall my early childhood again !

I absolutely adore all pieces of music by RVW but this wonderful creation holds a special place in my soul! The sense of urgency is vibrant but when the Oboe is still, the serenity is bewitching and special!

Those snow scenes evoked memories of when I lived in Sussex after a few days over Christmas of heavy snowfall. We were situated high up, and the view over east Sussex was what you showed. Beautiful.

Vaughan Williams is one of my favorite composers, if not the favorite. I listened to this piece all the time, when I was walking by the nearby lake last summer. It really fit the mood very well.

I have REDISCOVERED this magical piece after not previously understanding who'd composed it. Oh happy day!!! Just so happens to be a lovely evening near dusk scene here in Rome, a city whose parks' monuments seem to capture the timeless theme, the subtext of this piece. Now back to my script...SIGH

I am not musical, was not brought up with classical music, and never listened to it. I decided I had to introduce myself to it, and this was the first CD I randomly purchased (never heard of VW either). I thank god I did, as it instilled, not just an appreciation, but awe. I now have quite a wide ranging collection. I often think that had my young self not got this first but got the second CD I randomly chose, I would never have pursued it any further. The second CD was Webern - which baffled and bored me. I still cannot 'get' that to this day
Webern was a very brave choice - even for classical music enthusiasts!
John Smith - I came at classical music as an adult too - although I do remember being played Fingal's Cave (by Mendelssohn I think - Hebridean Suite ?) by my headmaster at primary school and listening to Peter and the Wolf too. But it was a crappy hit single in the 1980's - Hooked on Classics - which really lit my enthusiasm. I bought every track on the single and have never looked back. If you like VW do you also like George Butterworth and Malcolm Arnold? You might try Lennox Berkeley - his Sonatina for treble recorder is wonderful although it is often played on flute it was written for recorder. Jill Kemp has recorded it and also Dan Laurin (two superlative recorder players)
I learned about the joys of classical music while driving to a mountain rescue operation with a friend. He had a cassette copy of "The Planets'. I was hooked for life. When I learned of the vast works of RVW I was in Heaven.
Dear John, Wow, what a new world you could be opening up. VW is a fantastic start but there is literally an ocean of music out there. The Webern was a mistake at this stage though. Please, please listen to Gustav Holst's Planets Suite. That's what started me off many years ago and I never looked back. I wish you years and years of enjoyment.
P.S. I now have over 15,000 pieces of classical music in my library, from medieval to current day.

When you consider what Shostokovich was composing in wartime Russia (symphonies 7 & 8), the Vaughan Williams 5th Symphony and this Oboe Concerto is even more amazing.
New to RVW, only know the hits so to speak. Interesting to find the same musical motifs and themes in the rest of his music. Love it

I was in a war zone and I can only say listening to Vw has always calmed me the lark ascending was one of the first pieces I had heard if I am ever sad or missing a loved one I listen to Vw and my troubles feel far away
Most of the piece is iterative and demode, but the final 3 minutes are the stuff of legend, a historical musical peak!

I think RVW would be pleased with the images you've chosen to reflect the physical and cultural environment that his music is drawn from.
I particularly appreciate pictures of the built environment, the English architecture and small towns/villages from over the centuries, that simply doesn't exist here in America.

I just started oboe last month and dang, is it a lot of work. But I do not plan on stopping, and listening to magical pieces like this affirms that more and more. Maybe this is a wierd observation, but doesn't this concerto just breathe? It sounds like its alive.
Yes, it's very beautiful, isn't it? An oboe-player friend of mine says it's very difficult, though, so you'll have to practice hard. Do you know Richard Strauss's concerto? I'm sure you do but in case you haven't heard it , do give it a try.
I've been playing for 11 years now, and while it is the hardest thing I've ever done, you'll never regret it when you have moments when your oboe speaks through you.
Whenever I listen to this piece, I picture the oboe as a bird, just flying through a countryside

The R. Strauss oboe concerto was written for an American army captain who was an an amateur oboist. So it should not be that difficult, as far as Strauss goes. (Though he does tend to go far in that direction :-)
Total aside: This was as a return favor to the captain for not allowing his soldiers to trash Mr. Strauss's home as they raided the city. (I think that was Berlin.) I don't recall where I saw this tidbit; the jacket of the CD I have gives a different story, not entirely contradicting the above.

I couldn't agree more with your statement. but not all music lends itself to escape from human existence. especially modern music,which I find to be very stressful and unpleasant. Mozart is,in my opinion,the height of the sublime in music.Mozart's own life was full of joy and exhuberance.He epitomizes man's search for perfection and harmony while the music of Stravinsky seems to do the opposite.The Rite of Spring is not aimed at man's
better self.It connects to the many conflicts that exist in our troubled souls.So,if you are selective about "music" and choose carefully,you can relieve the storm and stress of human daily conflict and find some solace in
your waking hours.Just watch out when you fall asleep and your unconscious and repressed thoughts and feelings comes to the surface.
There's lots of 20th century music that is, IMO, sublime and serene, See certain works by Barber Copland David Diamond, Piston, etc. And also more recent composers like Arvo Part and Henryk Gorecki. John Adams' "Simple Tones in Common Time" is a gorgeous contemplative piece and so is "Old and Lost Rivers" by Tobias Picker. If you want a gorgeous piece by Stravinsky that a bit more genteel than Le Sacre, try Pulcinella. Or find your own. I love Mozart, too, but there's lots more there. Peace.

Bill, I'm an old Boomer and have been weened on rock and R&B. Believe me, there are treasures among the massive quantities of rubbish in R&R. I've found them. They of course do not pretend to be in the arena of classical; but treasures just the same.

A very nice concrto in a general pasoral mood, with a technically complex but musically clear solo part, and a wise wrting of the orchestral part.

The oboe is the clown of the orchestra and as such puts so much depth of sound to make it the most beautiful instrument of it's kind for telling a story.As a double reed instrument it's one of the hardest to grasp.Those that dew make it a wonderful sound like no other.The oboe is truly the heavenly flute.

+Ralph Dratman I'm sure Mike can speak for himself but I suspect he's referring to the oboe's comic possibilities - the duck-like sound it can make when it wants to. Vaughan Williams doesn't exploit that quality in this concerto, I think.
+uncle mike davis It is traditionally the bassoon, not the oboe, that has been given a comedic role- Stravinsky's Petroushka and the main theme of Dukas''The Sorcerer's Apprentice come immediately to mind.

"Very little of VW's music is nostalgic"? Is he kidding, ALL of VW's music is heavily, heavily nostalgic.
Just makes me wish his generation, as well as those that followed, had spent their time trying to write music as English in spirit as this as opposed to fight two world wars.
A major component of RVW's artistic project was the evocation of collective memory and shared experience. This objective is inherently nostalgic.
Much of RVW's music is like that, but not all. The war-like 4th and 6th Symphonies, and the alien landscape of the Symphonia Antarctica aren't exactly nostalgic for the most part.
@@markchapman6800 I agree. SOME of RVW's music is nostalgic but the eerie 3rd "Pastoral" Symphony, the fearsome 4th and the glacial, blood-chilling 6th are about as un-nostalgic as you can get.
The Piano Concerto 'nostalgic'? Don't think so. And the "Song of Thanksgiving" written at the end of WW2 is as much a warning not to let it happen again as it is a message of thanks for deliverance. VW's work is far too diverse for generalisations.
music can evoke nostalgia and memories for some and bring back feeling long ago lost, others nothing and you know they are both correct, I love this music for the sheer beauty of it, it can bring back thoughts of a time long lost, either way it is still beautiful music.
