In this video you will watch how my blacksmith making a beautiful long knife from an old rusty file. He lost the file many years ago since he was working in his old workplace. While his striker cleaning the workplace and the area around it he found it. Metal file has high carbon so it is good to turn it into any tools.
The knife is very sharp and beautiful.

This man impresses me every time! There are lots of plans online for building your own belt grinder. I think making one would be no problem for blacksmith. Also I have an old blacksmith post vice. He can have it if you guys cover shipping. It works well I just got a bigger one. It's over 100 years old.

They are high carbon steel typically, so they will harden..
We don't have them. We will try find them for making tools.

Excellent knife. Maybe he can make a belt sander out of on of his small 4 inch grinders!? I know he has the skill. Just search TH-cam for a video on homemade belt sanders made from a grinder. Old Man Andy. Keep up the good work Mr. Roseth.
Right! Asked him about making a belt grinder out an old grinder I gave him. He told that he could make and it is easy but there still one more problem for him is to buy the sand papers for.

Why did the blacksmith re-temper the file, isn't it already heat treated because its a file made from tool steel?
When it is burned it becomes soft. When it is very hot and it is put in water it is hardened.
