@Happines With less S nah, Lea didn’t really have mamba mentality. She was faced with the critical judgment of being a woman of color in general. Producers in Broadway wouldn’t accept her just for her being Asian, and the audience, because of the general bias for a white person rather than a person of color, would’ve picked her to death and declared her incapable of singing on the big stage if she made a single mistake. So Lea made sure to never make a single mistake. She made sure there would be purely no reason for them to say these things, no reason to say she’s not good, no reason to say that she’s not fit for the part. And the crazy thing is she wasn’t doing it to compete with others. She was doing it to survive and live her dream as a Broadway singer.

I suggest Alison Luff's take on "She Used to be Mine" a great example where you need not sacrifice technique for emotion and feel. In two months it has garnered nearly a million views. Highly recommended for a vocal coach like you.
@@arthlauren30 Shoshana's video in 8 months got over 700,000 views. Alison's video in over 2 months garnered over 1 million views. It may be true that the more views doesn't guarantee better quality in many cases but in this case it does. 😆
Tara, if you haven’t seen the recording of her audition for Miss Saigon, I highly recommend it. I believe she was 15 at the time. She went on to win a Tony, I believe. And she won the Tony at the age of 20.
She's not belting out, she was sanging the way she feels exaxtly what she was singing... she's good with everything about musicality and feeling what she is singing about
Feeling and musicality are not enough when you're a singer. You must have a strategy and technique to be able to hit it everytime especially for broadway singers. They perform 8x a week. She may be singing her heart out but that singing is well calculated.
I appreciate your reactions to her technical singing, because for me, who’s more an actor first, Lea is also doing a masterful acting performance of this song. Down to the techniques of acting. I use this performance as an example of great “acting of a song” when I teach. It’s so good to see her technical singing is just as masterful. Thank you 😊
And to add on to the “perfect ending” you mention with the singing, if you keep playing the clip (when the audience applauds forever and forever) she STAYS IN CHARACTER. Seeing actors drop their characters is one of the banes of my existence and when I teach or direct, I try to make it clear that they need to remain in character AT ALL TIMES. And Lea, beautifully, does just that at the end of this song.
To put it perfectly, she is a perfect performer. The acting, the diction, the wonderful clarity of her voice, and her eyes... Oh God, her eyes are expressive, the emotions are practically screaming in her eyes that she is the character herself. After all, one of my favorites in singing is where you sing with emotions. To sing with emotions you need to be connected to the song or to be the character itself.
i love that she mixes and not belts on the high note ("known") as opposed to other singers, particularly samantha barks who's played eponine in the movie. it's not anger, it's defeat. eponine knows marius will not love her back but cannot change her feelings for him, thus the 'i love him's. lea is pretty much the only person i've seen that understood that in their portrayal of eponine.
As a middle aged former choir girl, I just love your reviews and commentary. I especially love your “nerdy” enthusiasm - I still get jazzed by awesome vocals and appreciate your insightful commentary. Thank you!

Lea Salonga was one of the female singers in the Philippines who was known worldwide. Not only that, she also sang for Disney. Probably because of her pronunciation are easy to hear, since Disney is mostly based on movies for children, the kids that will watch will have an easier understanding for the song, even for adults!
Ive heard Lea on one of her interviews, she actually studies and memorizes other roles lines, therefore, she actually memorizes the whole story! In one of her miss saigon shows in london, she said that while the show was going on and her role was on some kind of a break, she was actually talking to one of her bestfriends in the philippines with some kind of a family problem through the phone while the show was going on and when its time for her to go back on stage, she told her friend something like its my turn then she said she went back to the stage to perform but told her friend that she will be right back at her! Technically she is flawless but i dunno, i liked the interpretation and emotions of Shoshana’s version better.
@@midnytblossom102 agreed! Shoshana's version is so much better.
@@arthlauren30 Shoshana's video in 8 months got over 700,000 views. Alison's video in over 2 months garnered over 1 million views. It may be true that the more views doesn't guarantee better quality in many cases but in this case it does. 😆
Tara, this reaction made me one of your solid fans
Lea is the person you try to be like in the musical theater world. And multiple Disney princesses, she is GOALS
lea salonga is a great story teller not just technically also emotionaly
Her diction and pronunciation and enunciation is spot on. You can understand every single word she sings.
Am I still in love with Lea Salonga after all these years? YES!
I don't believe in perfection... until this performance.
Love watching you geek out! Lea is my favorite Eponine. No matter how many times I watch that performance I still cry!
Lea is one of a kind. So clear and flawless when she sings, she is just perfection.
Tara, if you haven’t seen the recording of her audition for Miss Saigon, I highly recommend it. I believe she was 15 at the time. She went on to win a Tony, I believe. And she won the Tony at the age of 20.
She was 18
TT Boy she was 17 at the time of the Audition.
Yes! Tara NEEDS to react to that!
No, she was 57.
yeees!!
Lea Salonga is the best ever because her voice is purity, magical and crystal clear 🎇🎆
Whatever but lea is a great singer 😊
@@NickMomOf2 true po
@@nikkosalvador3374 are you a good singer or coach?
@@nikkosalvador3374 can you win a olivier award even tony? A grandslam even? Hmmm last msg to you.... THINk! Tsk tsk tsk
To sing with emotions you need to be connected to the song or to be the character itself.
perfect!
i love that she mixes and not belts on the high note ("known") as opposed to other singers, particularly samantha barks who's played eponine in the movie. it's not anger, it's defeat. eponine knows marius will not love her back but cannot change her feelings for him, thus the 'i love him's. lea is pretty much the only person i've seen that understood that in their portrayal of eponine.
Lea Michele's live version is similar to this as well!
Shame that her glee cover made her belt it.
As a middle aged former choir girl, I just love your reviews and commentary. I especially love your “nerdy” enthusiasm - I still get jazzed by awesome vocals and appreciate your insightful commentary. Thank you!
Pure reaction. This episode is so true unlike others they tend to fake every reactions but this one is genuine.
YES Lea is a legend and I'm so thrilled you're doing this. I saw her love in Wisconsin and her voice rings so beautifully when she sings!
Please review Kyla Jade singing One Night Only from The Voice!
Please react to Shoshana Bean and Avery Wilson [saving all my love for you]
I saw lea as fantine in broadway yeaaaars ago and let me tell you that started my love affair with broadway and everything musical. She is a dream.
seriously, this is a LEGIT Vocal Coach
(this is my first time watching this vid btw)
She's one of my favorite singers. So clean and clear when singing. You can clearly listen to the lyrics and words. Dictions are perfect!
Leah is a living music, she embodied every perfect notes and tones..
"On. My. Own. ehe. NO." *dead* 🤣🤣
can't stop laughing
RIP replay button on that part. HAHAHAHAHAHA
Love Les Mis and love listening to the various performers that do this song. This was one of the best I've heard. Clearly a pro with exquisite skills. Really enjoyed the reaction. Love when you geek out or go musical nerd. It's great. Keep up the good work.
Lea Salonga was one of the female singers in the Philippines who was known worldwide. Not only that, she also sang for Disney. Probably because of her pronunciation are easy to hear, since Disney is mostly based on movies for children, the kids that will watch will have an easier understanding for the song, even for adults!
Watching Tara fan-girling over Lea for 12 minutes is literally the best thing I’ve watched in a while.
Amazing
Lea is my absolute favorite Eponine! I have a line from "A Little Fall of Rain" tattooed because of her.
YES this is amazing! So happy you chose the 10th anniversary too!! Best Les Mis performance EVER!!!
Tara Simon: an angel is singing
Angels: Lea is singing
I love this comment here
Haha legit!
Ms. Tara is the ONLY LEGIT VOCAL COACH IN TH-cam..
her and tristan paredes are my fave
Tristan paredes don't know who lea salonga is.. And he claims that he is a vocal coach... Like seriously??? you've got to be kidding me.
@@archietrinidad2663 lol, yeah, he legit doesn't know anything about vocal techniques, he just sits there gaping at every single singer he reacts to😂
@@anjalinarayanan6881 IKR!!.. What is so disappointing is theres a lot who are easily impressed becoz someone said so... Most especially if it is from some of the so called vocal coach/es wannabes here in TH-cam without any authority nor credibility to back it up..
TOTALLY AGREE
Lea is so consistent ever since. I'm so proud of her.
i am a lead guitarist but i was addicted with her angelic voice,
she"s got the one of most angelic voice vibrato,, and i was addicted,,, she is amazing
Love the chest vs. mix mini-quiz midway through. That type of thing helps me see if my ear is on point or not. 😊
I'm obsessed with her voice. It's actual perfection
Haha this reaction has to be one of the funniest😂
Watching you react to this song is very nice! You really love the technical aspects of this performance by Lea but you also know it on a personal level by how mom would listen to this while pregnant. :)
Awwwwwww
one of my all time favorite performances by her! thx for doing this!
Her: do this not this
Me:I bearly hear the difference
Makes me respect people who can distinguish between the difference so clearly without her pointing it out
I only hear the difference because my former voice teacher when I was younger really emphasized it for me until I finally realized the slight difference.
You reacting to this makes me so happy as my mom had this on tape so I watched Lea in this and listening to Miss Saigon and she heavily influenced how I sing. She is one of my mom's favorite performers.
