This group had more talent in their little finger than many groups today ever will. Harmonies, instrumental musicianship, arrangements, song choices, they were pure professionals, all of them.
When I was 16, I went to a Commodores concert. A friend was going with me as well. Because we were minors, the only way she could go was if an adult went with us. So my mom went with us. It was general admission, so we got there early so we could sit in the front row. My friend was absolutely gorgeous. She got the attention of the stage manager who invited us to meet the band. We met everyone but Lionel Richie. When we had to leave, William King (one of the Commodores, in this video he’s playing the piano/keyboard), wanted to make sure we got to the car safely. It was around 2 in the morning & he walked us to the car. Gave us all a hug & a kiss on the cheek. I’ve never forgotten his kindness.
Fantastic. Amazing experience. I had a meet and greet with one of my favorite bands. I'd been listening to their music since 1975. They're one of the reasons I co-founded a Progrock band. It was a bit overwhelming. Oh, the band I met was, Yes. My band was microscopic in comparison. No regrets. 🎷🎸🎹 👋🇨🇦🎼🎶🎶✌
No.1 on the Country charts. No.1 on the Billboard charts. This song made The Commandors a very versatile soul/funk band. Love the song. Love ❤️ this group.
It's a song about divorce. Giving you back your name...giving her maiden name back. It's totally heart wrenching. I went through it 12 years ago and this song got me through the pain.
Exactly a smile and tears like incredible music should. I think most of us especially by a certain age reallly feel this song (& im a female but it does this to me just an incredible song)
Okay these 2 are by far the best! The music is always good, but Jordan and the way his face lights up, and Amber always wearing that beautiful smile when they are reacting is amazing!
The Commodores could not write a bad song. I was in middle school when they were big. My sister was almost 5 years older than I was and she had all of their albums. I bought the first Lionel Ritchie album when it came out. Everything on it was good. All those guys were extremely talented.
Lionel Richie is a great pianist. This is Lionel's country sound. Those Alabama roots set in.He also does that country sound in "Stuck on You". He's good at it.You guys have to check out The Commodores "Zoom".I love Lionel .I own so much of his music with and without the Commodores he is amazing. That voice is unmistakable.
People often don't realize how closely related country, soul, and R&B are until a song like this blends them so seamlessly. They're distinct musical styles that developed in parallel cultures. Two separate cultures that lived side by side but separately for hundreds of years developed their own music, but the proximity of the two cultures meant that they borrowed from eachother until the lines blurred significantly. You can hear soul in older country and you can hear R&B in newer country just like you hear country in this song.
The best music to me is genre-less. If it feeds the soul, just sit back and enjoy it. They were a lot like the Eagles to me back in the day. Just making good music was all that mattered to them.
The first time I heard of the Commadores, I was in a club in Panama City FL. It was The song, Brick House, blew my mind. I was born in 1959, so I was lucky enough to grow up hearing the best music ever made, be it rock, country, Motown, I think that's why I love music so much.
The Commodores are the epitome of "easy listening". This song is probably my favorite song from them. There's something about it that's very distinct - I guess all great songs have a uniqueness to them. It has such a calming vibe to it, and yet has enough energy to lift your mood too. Thank you for the reaction. I love being reminded of old favorites like this that I haven't heard in a while.
The Commodores were formed while Richie was in college at the famed Tuskegee college in Alabama, so their roots to country music is 100% genuine. Matter of fact, Lionel Richie wrote tremendous hits for major country acts, such as "Lady" for Kenny Rogers, which you must review if you haven't already.
Tuskegee is about 15 miles away from Auburn, Alabama. I was fortunate to go to Auburn at a time where The Commodores were still together and a major band and they would play a concert in Auburn *every year*.
You really can't beat his ballads. Remember that he wrote "Lady" for Kenny Rogers to sing which was a huge hit. And his piano playing is just wonderful - as you can hear it in this song even though it didn't show him playing it in this video. And you are so right, Amber, he's always given total joy to us all. My wedding song was his "Truly". : )
Not a fan of Brick House, but do enjoy the other two, plus the song "Still" - - all very mellow (not Brick House of course), but very smooth and enjoyable.
Love how you both are smiling and clutching your chests at the same time. Absolutely adore you both. Such a sweet family. You make each day better for all of us. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 ❤❤
Totally agree.I`m loving the memories they evoke ,playing and reacting to music i listened to as a child and in myn early teens.Always go away with a huge smile on my face.Great community they have here too. What`s not to like?:)x

One of my favorite bands from childhood. My older cousin (3 yrs older) introduced me to all the great classic R&B groups/artists. The Commodores were one of her favorites (mine too) & whatever new record she bought, she would play it for me, & then I'd go out to buy my own copy of the single or album. We both had awesome collections- Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire, The GAP Band, Lakeside, Cameo, etc. The Commodores were the one group I listened to the most, as I was a huge fan of Lionel Richie's song writing talent. The man can write love songs like no one's business - every one guaranteed to be featured at weddings everywhere. Sail On & EASY are my top two favorites, followed by Three Times A Lady, STILL, & Nightshift. Please go further down this rabbit hole. Oh, I almost forgot - Brickhouse will get ya movin' & groovin' in your seat. Every time DJ's would put that song on; whether it was the radio or at a the local nightclub/disco - it always got everyone up on their feet as soon as they heard that opening beat drop, Lionel's "UH!", the horns joining in, & the cat call whistle. That was the signal to get up & dance - LOL!
Y'all were destined to love his one. Commodores cover genres. Like EW&F, they also have some of the most touching love songs. My personal favorites are "Just to Be Close to You," a very different composition, and "Still." Both very reaffirming and beautiful.
Lionel Ritchie did this as a duet with Tim McGraw...sounded amazing, and funny how you said this sounded like a country song! It was a live show, you can find it on youtube
Watching both of your smiles literally brought tears to my eyes. I was lucky enough to hear it fresh off am radio back in the day. As a trumpet player, I love the sneak attack by the horns late in the tune.
Another band I love. A huge part of the soundtrack of my childhood . You looked so shocked at the change of their sound. 😁 There weren’t hard lines drawn around genres back then. Groups were allowed to do amazing things floating around all genres and themes. They could do 3 genres in one song if they wished and it was appreciated by other groups instead of being harsh critics of any attempt to step out of the lines. They should bring that attitude back and see the amazing things they could do with freedom of creativity. ❤
Excellent reaction--so well attuned to the tune's subtle shifts of mood. Commodores' slow jams were the ultimate slow dance songs of the day for a reason!
The Commodores/Lionel Richie hit me when I was in middle school. I'd listened to R&B since I was little. The Commodores really hit the spot. This really shows me how music has no color of skin. If you love it LISTEN TO IT!!!!!!
Awww, this takes me back.... surprisingly, one of my fave Commodores tracks is from after Lionel Ritchie left the band; Nightshift. Would love it if you reacted to that, it's a tribute to their favourite singers like Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, who went too soon. A lovely atmospheric song (at least I think so 🙂)
I cry every time I watch the music video for "Nightshift". At the end of the music video, the band members are performing wearing their naval-inspired suits that they wore in the 1960s. It was their way of saying goodbye. Fortunately, The Commodores are still together, and still tour.
I loved these guys back in the 70s and bought the single `Easy’, and later when I heard they had a new song in the charts, I bought it without hearing it - that was ‘Three times a Lady.’
Now, imagine that every hour or every day of every year you were growing up was filled with all the amazing music you've been reacting to. It's what we grew up with.
AMEN to that!!!! We had the very best of crossover music as well. Eagles country/ rock to pop/ rock to classic rock. Lionel Ritchie wrote some amazing songs in different genres; country, soul, motown, r&b, and pop. He was the King of love songs in the 80s, which started in the late 70s with three times a lady and still. We did have it all on radio, plus so many variety shows. Plus Carson, Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert on late and Saturday late morning American Bandstand and Soul Train.
The piano in this song is _so_ good, kind of emotional.Y'all are gonna _LOVE_ everything they do. "Machine Gun" is an instrumental by them that I _LOVE_ . Check it. And speaking of instrumentals, "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group is one of the few rock instrumentals to ever make it to # 1 on the pop charts, My personal all time favorite song. No bull. It's my favorite song _EVER_ . The first album I ever bought was "They Only Come Out at Night", and it was for that song, (I was 11 years old), which is probably why it holds a special place in my heart.
Loved, loved, loved, this track when it came out in '79, and I still love it to this day. Funny thing it, this song is probably one of the smoothest ways to kick your romantic partner to the curb...LMBO!!! Much respect to the classic lineup of the Commodores.
I haven’t heard this song in years but it’s actually incredible. Country, funk, disco, R&B…all together. Most groups can mix 2, maybe 3 styles, but I can literally pick out all four in certain spots. Insane. Commodores are kind of like Chicago; once their lead singer got all schmaltzy pop things kinda when downhill but before that they were FIRE.
Not only were they amazing singers, but they were funny!! After college they had a successful song (can't remember which one) and I remember them being interviewed and the thing I remember best was that when they were asked how they got their name, Lionel Ritchie replied that they closed their eyes and opened a dictionary, and stuck there finger on word. Straight faced he said "We just missed being the commodes".
This is my favorite Commodores song. When this song came out, I was going through the break up of a long term relationship. This song made me live again. It still gives me that sense of freedom.
Another great song by Lionel Richie is “Say You Say Me” from the movie “ White Nights”, which is an amazing movie!!!! This song won an Academy Award in 1986. Hope you react to this song soon!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Oh man, I Love this song so much!!! I feel like I have loved this song my whole life! It still stands up and still gives me the feels. they. have so many amazing tunes. Easy, Brick House, 3 times a lady....and on it goes....
" 3 times a lady" is a great love song by them, " Easy like Sunday morning " is a long the lines of sail on, and it has a great guitar riff! Lionel Richie is one of the very best of his generation and I'm very proud to say he is from my home state of Alabama.
@@shelashepard3420 You are right. Sucks to lose 30 years and your perceived future but I've grown used to it over the last year and ready to move on. Time heals all. Mostly.
Hey, thanks for reviewing this song, it brings back memories for sure. While at Basic Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia 1979, this song would be played on a jukebox at a snack bar that we were not able to patronize because we training to be soldiers. But we heard this and other classics from that era over and over playing on that jukebox from across the street. It makes me happy to hear this wonderful song. Thanks for the great memories.
One of the great break up/divorce songs of all time. "I know it's a shame, but I'm givin' you back your name". Classic. This, "We Just Disagree" by Dave Mason, and "Separate Lives" by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin are my three favorites of all time. IMO Lionel Ritchiie is the greatest writer of love songs in the R&R era. Listen to him doing "Still", "My Love", "Ballerina Girl", "You Are", "Easy", "Penny Lover", "Zoom", "Three Times A Lady", "Lady", "Stuck On You", and "Say You, Say Me".
I looked through the comments to see if anybody felt the same as I do about that line. It’s one of the more clever lines I can think of in any song. Givin you back your name. That’s just a brilliant phrase.
@@hmmmyeahnahdoh823 But I do like "Love Will Find A Way" better than those. Music is personal and is it ok that I like that particular song better. Not sure where your going. Love Will Find a Way is my personal favorite and that is all I was stating. Nothing more, Nothing less. Was not asking them to react to it.
Hi guys, this is giving me chills up and down both arms!! I love the Commodores. I went to see them live in 1978 at the LA Forum. Wow was that a concert. My friend and I could only afford tickets up in the cheap seats, but it didn't matter, it was a party. Their costumes were so bright and their moves so smooth, we could see them even though we were so far from the stage. I got a red Commodores t-shirt that I wore to death. I wish so much that I still had it. This song is beautiful. My favorite if you haven't played it already is: "Too Hot to Trot". If you haven't played it , I would love if you could play it for me. It is really funky and fun.
He "covered" many of his hits as country duets on his Tuskegee album a few years ago. "Stuck on You" magnificent in the 1980s but his duet with Darius Rucker was better. Whole album is great.
Gotta say that I'm not a fan of the duet. Unfortunately, Lionel's voice just isn't what it was, and that legendary smoothness is gone. He sings many of the notes staccato, and it's especially apparent how far off he is when Darius comes in sounding awesome as always. I found it kind of sad to listen to.
I remember, that Lionel Ritchie worked with Kenny Rogers some, before Lionel began to do solo work. I don't remember the song, but Lionel wrote a country hit for Kenny Rogers. The Commodores are from Tuskegee, Alabama, so it isn't as surprising as some would think, that they knew their way around Country music. They sort of did their own thing & weren't stuck in a pigeon hole.
You guys hit it right on the nose. Lionel Richie's favorite style of music growing up was country. And that was the reason why Lionel Richie eventually left the commodores. The group kept complaining that Lionel Richie was writing too many country themed love songs. If you guys are up to it, you should watch and react to the CMT special that Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers did called Crossroads.
Watching you 2 hear songs I grew up listening to for the 1st time reminds me and my husband how we felt the 1st time we heard and fell in love with the songs all over again
The Great Lionel Richie......Commodore, solo artist, writer of We are the World, is just one of my favorites of ALL time. There's nothing he did that I don't love.
The look on your faces when the song began just tickled me to no end…the same I’ve felt ever since the song first dropped. Thank you for this…can’t begin to explain how much I enjoyed your reaction! ❤️🔥❤️🔥🇨🇦
Not just my favorite Commodores song but one of my favs period. Slippery When Wet, Machine Gun, Are You Happy, and This Is Your Life are tunes I also enjoy.
There will never be a time with as much great music as there was from the late 60s through the early 80s - all genres: Rock, Pop, Soul, Country, R&B, Disco - this was everyday music on the radio, in the movies, on TV, at the Grammys. For the future's sake, I hope I am wrong.
They just announced a Lionel Ritchie / Earth Wind & Fire Tour! What!? Can you imagine if they join together for this tune? I'm so there in August in Sunrise, Fl.
I love this song! Another song with the same feal to it for me is Sailing by Christopher Cross. Follow that one with Ships by Barry Manilow and you have part of the playlist I put on when driving down the PCH in the summer. I'm feeling the California vibe just thinking about it! And Amber... That shirt? Is that Bigfoot riding Nessie?? I love it!!!
Sail On is such a glorious song! It presaged Lionel Richie’s path down the country route in solo songs and those he wrote for others including Kenny Rogers. PS This May seem like a strange juxtaposition but you need to listen to the Pointer Sisters’ Fairytale and Stevie Wonder’s I Ain’t Gonna Stand For It. Once you do, you’ll appreciate the connection! Prepare to exchange befuddled yet pleasantly surprised looks just as you did here!
Lady by Kenny Rogers was meant for the Commodores, but they voted against it and when Kenny Rogers asked Lionel to write him a song he gave him “Lady”.
So many great songs. "3 times a lady", "Still", "Easy like Sunday morning", "Brickhouse", "Nightshift". I could go on and on.
I'd forgotten about "Still." Great song.
@@barefootgroupie4504 Just To Be Close To You, Sweet Love, Machine Gun etc
@TJ It is, but you always HEAR "like Sunday morning" in your head when you say the word.
Yes, I think Amber would love 3 Times a Lady.
Can you imagine NOT hearing those?
This group had more talent in their little finger than many groups today ever will. Harmonies, instrumental musicianship, arrangements, song choices, they were pure professionals, all of them.
so true
Absolute truth.
Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie collaborated on Lady, and they worked together like brothers over the years.
Lionel Richie is a songwriting genius. Soul, country, R&B... Glad you enjoyed this.
The Star of David types write his songs, just as they do with all of Hollywood.

Love this song 👍👍👍💕💕
So smooth! Love all their songs. Still and 3 times a lady are so beautiful.
I love watching your reactions to the music I grew up listening to.
I got to see them live once. A simple and beautiful song.
One of my favorite songs EVER
Frankenstein! Yeah!
Loved, loved, loved, this track when it came out in '79, and I still love it to this day. Funny thing it, this song is probably one of the smoothest ways to kick your romantic partner to the curb...LMBO!!! Much respect to the classic lineup of the Commodores.
THE GOOD OL 7dz
I haven’t heard this song in years but it’s actually incredible. Country, funk, disco, R&B…all together. Most groups can mix 2, maybe 3 styles, but I can literally pick out all four in certain spots. Insane. Commodores are kind of like Chicago; once their lead singer got all schmaltzy pop things kinda when downhill but before that they were FIRE.
You guys nailed this cuz this song ACTUALLY entered the County music charts when it came out and very well.
🤣😅🤣👍
This is my favorite Commodores song. When this song came out, I was going through the break up of a long term relationship. This song made me live again. It still gives me that sense of freedom.
Another great song by Lionel Richie is “Say You Say Me” from the movie “ White Nights”, which is an amazing movie!!!! This song won an Academy Award in 1986. Hope you react to this song soon!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
YES !!! I forgot about this one- beautiful song 🎵
One of my favorite movies and one of my favorite songs!
Oh man, I Love this song so much!!! I feel like I have loved this song my whole life! It still stands up and still gives me the feels. they. have so many amazing tunes. Easy, Brick House, 3 times a lady....and on it goes....
My favorite.
" 3 times a lady" is a great love song by them, " Easy like Sunday morning " is a long the lines of sail on, and it has a great guitar riff! Lionel Richie is one of the very best of his generation and I'm very proud to say he is from my home state of Alabama.
YES!!
Love the look on yalls faces when Lionel goes into his Alabama twang😀
In recent years Lionel made a country album with many of his hits re done country style. Lionel is a country boy at heart
Just finishing suffering a divorce after 30 years and I've spent a LOT of time listening to this song the last few months. It hits me in the feels.
Now you're Easy Like Sunday Morning. Good luck Brother
You will be alright, just takes time
@@shelashepard3420 You are right.
One of the best songs ever!
Also Sweet Love and Just to be close to you.
I looked through the comments to see if anybody felt the same as I do about that line. It’s one of the more clever lines I can think of in any song. Givin you back your name. That’s just a brilliant phrase.
I have many favorite Lionel songs outside the Commodores. "Love Will Find A Way" is one by Lionel I just love.
@@lreed1040 Truly, Stuck On You and Lady come to mind.
These guys could break the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus pattern without you even realizing it. And it was a huge hit!
I knew this would catch y'all off guard. What a great song! A couple of my other favorites from them... "Easy" and "Zoom".
EW&F, Heatwave and The Commodores…can’t go wrong. Great bands, great songs.
Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose "Too Late To Turn Back Now" & "Treat Her Like A Lady"..Must Hear Classics.
The remake of "Stuck on You" with Darius is the best for sure!!
I've run away the blues... says it all!
❤❤❤❤ This Song!!!!!
Love this song!💙🧡💜 I have never thought of it as country though!
Easy Like Sunday Morning....one of my favorite guitar solos!
You guys have to react to "Three Times a Lady" "Easy" "Still" "Truly" all magnificent songs by The Commodores. Much love from England 🏴
Sweet Love, Night Shift.
Watching you 2 hear songs I grew up listening to for the 1st time reminds me and my husband how we felt the 1st time we heard and fell in love with the songs all over again
Amber has such a beautiful smile on her face. N my boy Jordan… he’s just pure joy to watch during these reactions
Decades of great music.
The Great Lionel Richie......Commodore, solo artist, writer of We are the World, is just one of my favorites of ALL time. There's nothing he did that I don't love.
Written with MJ
Love how you react to the songs and break them down!!! Good job!!
One of the best songs I’ve ever heard from this loaded group. OAN, Will needs to sing this to Jada lol
The look on your faces when the song began just tickled me to
no end…the same I’ve felt ever since the song first dropped.
Thank you for this…can’t begin to explain how much I enjoyed
your reaction! ❤️🔥❤️🔥🇨🇦
Not just my favorite Commodores song but one of my favs period. Slippery When Wet, Machine Gun, Are You Happy, and This Is Your Life are tunes I also enjoy.
I must be emotional today. This song brought a few tears ❤. Paired with this video it’s so so good.
Oh my oh my oh my goodness gracious 😳 😍
Okay, you've done The Conmodores' Sail On, you've done Come Sail Away by Styx, another great sailing song is Sailing by Christopher Cross.
And Bobby Darin's Beyond the Sea
Also, they need to do "Sailing" by Rod Stewart
There will never be a time with as much great music as there was from the late 60s through the early 80s - all genres: Rock, Pop, Soul, Country, R&B, Disco - this was everyday music on the radio, in the movies, on TV, at the Grammys. For the future's sake, I hope I am wrong.
Sail On = the ideal give it to her smooth (were done
yo you gotta bounce I'm fixxin to have a good time)

They just announced a Lionel Ritchie / Earth Wind & Fire Tour! What!? Can you imagine if they join together for this tune? I'm so there in August in Sunrise, Fl.
There's a great live version of this that Lionel sings with Tim McGraw in a Lionel Richie tribute special.
This song is amazing. Man, just a melodic masterpiece.
The Commodores Country/Soul fusion is unmatched !!!
Oh, wait until you get to "brickhouse" by the Commodores.
Jay was referring to the Commodores' song "Lady". They have one titled that too.
Huge hit on the country, pop, R&B and easy listening charts. Probably the most well-rounded song of all time.
