  • This video is for an experiment that I did comparing a shirt where I placed the dye over the ice to a shirt where I placed the dye under the ice. I used colors that have great color splits too.

    Appreciate the tip on making the spiral back side up so the front looks best. On another video, you suggested turning the shirts inside out to avoid speckling when ice dying. Your suggestions have made my projects look so much better! Thank you for consistently explaining the whys along with the how-tos.

    What is soda ash where can I find it and what is it used for I mean what's the purpose of putting it on the shirt? I have watched several videos on these tie dyes and I recently got into doing some tie dyes and some people use that soda ash and some people don't. But I love this technique you have used I have not seen anyone use ice on a tie dye before they look amazing!

      Hi! I'm really glad you like the ice dyeing technique. Soda ash is sodium carbonate and it is a necessary component for the type of dye I use (fiber reactive dye). Without it, the dye will not properly bond with the fabric and it will mostly wash out of the fabric. I have a blog post on my website explaining more about soda ash and where you can purchase it. Here is a link to the blog post: www.funendeavors.com/tie-dye-blog/zd1qlk7dvuzwrglfbio4yvs2t6c97d
      I have a lot of other useful information about tie dye on my blog as well.

    I have a few DUI experiences

  • @Jaxom35x
    @Jaxom35x ปีที่แล้ว +3

    They both look very different and quite good for different reasons. The DUI being darker and more defined, showing the colors better especially the blue. The DOI shirt is the one I actually prefer because it looks 'older', the shoulder area is more splotchy and the less definition in colors and design make it look like someone has worn and loved this shirt for decades. It's fun to see various experiments using differing variables, thank you for creating these and showing off the results.

    I’m more of a DOI or snow guy and I don’t usually incline a spiral. Love the experiment though. Hopefully it can help answer the DOI vs DUI question.

    Wondering which uses more dye powder? Thinking the DUI uses more product...am I correct??

      I don't really know, but if I was guessing I think it probably does.

    Hi Angie I actually like both the shirts but I think I prefer the doi in this experiment because it gives it a weathered/distressed look and I like the light blue lines. I am curious If the dui was to sit in muck you would have gotten the darker brighter colors and there's light blue lines as well? Great experiment I have never done a DOI on a spiral but I am going to give it a try 👍😁 as always thanks for your experiments Angie

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yes, I would've gotten darker lines if I would've allowed the shirt to process in the muck. I actually posted a comparison of a rack dye vs. a muck dye for a DOI a few days ago and the muck dyed shirt had darker radiating lines than the rack dyed shirt.

    What about a thin layer of fine ice over the shirt, then dye and more ice on top of it all. That might give you the best of both worlds. It is my favorite method personally.

    • @FunEndeavors

    Sadly with my SA, my tie dying days are done. I think I enjoy your dying and your channel the most as you seem to gravitate to the same colors I do and dying style.

    The only thing I would change in the experiment is I wouldn’t have inclined on this one. Do a separate experiment with an incline. DUI is what I do 95% of the time because of the better color saturation.

    This is a great example. I knew I was going to love it by the colors you used. My favorite, love the DUI! That may be because I've dyed 90% of my pieces with DUI for the past 6 years. I'm partial to the look. I feel like I get more vibrant colors using DUI. This is a very good example, Angie!

    • @FunEndeavors
      @FunEndeavors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! DUI is my go to most of the time too, and my favorite of these two shirts as well. I like having more control over the dye placement as well as the more vibrant colors.

  • @Uniquelyyours1

    I like the dui better but both are nice. Could you do a single color on each and see how the dye splits. That might be a better test. Thanks for sharing your experiments with us, Angie.

    • @FunEndeavors

      Yes, I could do a single color.
